Experiences of children and adults having a sibling with profound intellectual and multiple disabilities: a qualitative systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Advances in medical care have enabled an increasing number of children with profound intellectual and multiple disabilities (PIMD) to live beyond early infancy and childhood. However, the burden of caregiving and restrictions on family life markedly impact the siblings of children with PIMD. To our knowledge, no qualitative systematic review has yet explored the experiences of these siblings. OBJECTIVE: This review aimed to synthesize the experiences of individuals, both children and adults, having a sibling with PIMD. INFORMATION SOURCES: Searches were conducted in MEDLINE (Ovid

Family responses and influencing factors in raising children with developmental disabilities: A cross-sectional study in South Korea.

Family responses, which encompass how families respond to raise children with developmental disabilities (DDs) and manage their child's condition, have a profound impact on both the child and the family as a whole. Demographic and contextual factors contribute to shaping family responses and overall experiences. Gaining a comprehensive understanding of family responses to raising children with DDs and the influencing factors is essential. This study examined how families responded to caring for their children with DDs and determined the factors associated with the family responses. A cross-sec

Pilot study of a real-time early agitation capture technology (REACT) for children with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

OBJECTIVE: Children and adolescents with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD), particularly those with autism spectrum disorder, are at increased risk of challenging behaviors such as self-injury, aggression, elopement, and property destruction. To mitigate these challenges, it is crucial to focus on early signs of distress that may lead to these behaviors. These early signs might not be visible to the human eye but could be detected by predictive machine learning (ML) models that utilizes real-time sensing. Current behavioral assessment practices lack such proactive predictive mo

Results From the First Para Report Card on Physical Activity for Children and Adolescents With Disabilities in Chile.

BACKGROUND: Global initiatives have been put in place to attain a thorough understanding of worldwide variations in physical activity (PA) among children and adolescents. Yet, there is limited knowledge about PA-related indicators, specifically for children and adolescents with disabilities (CAWD). To bridge this data gap, the Global Matrix of Para Report Cards (PRCs) of CAWD initiative was established to address the scarcity of information on PA for this population globally. The purpose of this manuscript is to summarize the results of Chile's First PRC on PA for CAWD. METHODS: Chile's PRC i

Capacity building for quality care and education for children with severe to profound intellectual disabilities in South Africa.

In the South African context, children with severe to profound intellectual disabilities are not accommodated in the compulsory education system, although steps are being taken in this direction in acknowledgement of their right to education. Critical to this development is the training of educators and caregivers. There is a paucity of studies from South Africa addressing the training of educators and caregivers. The Teacher Empowerment for Disability Inclusion (TEDI) project developed a course on the education and care of children with severe to profound intellectual disabilities to facilita

Sedentary behaviour in non-ambulant children and young people with physical disabilities: a systematic search and review protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Non-ambulant children and young people with physical disabilities are at high risk of experiencing negative health outcomes associated with sedentary time. A previous scoping review summarising evidence relating to sedentary behaviours of children with physical disabilities identified the need for validated methods of measuring physical activity of children who use wheelchairs and evaluation of interventions to reduce sedentary time. The scoping review did not assess the quality of evidence relating to this topic, therefore its validity remains unclear. No reviews focussing on no

Empowering self-help groups for caregivers of children with disabilities in Kilifi, Kenya: Impacts and their underlying mechanisms.

Bringing up a child with disabilities in a low-income setting is challenged by inadequate resources, limited psycho-social support and poverty. Not surprisingly, many caregivers experience fatigue, distress and isolation. To address and investigate these issues, action was taken to set up twenty self-help groups focusing on caregiver empowerment. A realist evaluation design was adopted to evaluate impacts associated with the self-help process and to identify mechanisms determining the outcomes. Monthly monitoring visits were conducted to the groups during a ten-month set-up period, at the end
