Skin cancer and ultraviolet-B radiation under the Antarctic ozone hole: southern Chile, 1987-2000.

BACKGROUND: Punta Arenas, Chile, the southernmost city in the world (53 degrees S), with a population of 154,000, is located near the Antarctic ozone hole (AOH) and has been regularly affected by high levels of ultraviolet-B (UV-B) radiation each spring for the last 20 years. Large increases in UV-B associated with the AOH have been measured with increases in UV-B at 297 nm of up to 38 times those of similar days with normal ozone. Recently we reported significant increases in sunburns during the spring of 1999 on days with low ozone because of the AOH. METHODS: A surveillance of skin cancers…

[Environmental contamination with Toxocara sp. eggs in public squares and parks from Santiago, Chile, 1999].

Most of cases of visceral larva migrans syndrome are caused by Toxocara canis larvae. Man acquires the infection by accidental ingestion of ripe eggs of the helminth. In order to find out the frequency of the presence of Toxocara sp. eggs in dog fecal specimens from public places of Santiago city in 1999 july-september a study was carried out in 84 squares and 12 parks from 32 counties. Three fecal samples were collected in each of these places, making a total of 288. Each sample was processed according to a modified Telemann method and three smears of each were microscopically examined. Toxoc

[Parasitic helminths infection in Coho salmón, Oncorhynchus kisutch, during their return to Simpson river, Chile].

Between may and july 1994, 17 adult returning salmons, Oncorhynchus kisutch, were collected in the River Simpson, Chile. All fishes showed infection by plerocercoids of Diphyllobothrium sp. in different locations: stomach, spleen, liver, mesenteries and gonads. Infection with larval cestodes of an unidentified species of Phillobothriidae was determined in the intestine of seven (41.2%) salmons and its prevalences of infection showed significant differences between female and male salmons. The 94.4% of total plerocercoids of Diphyllobothrium were isolated from the stomach wall. Prevalence and m…

Depression stigma in Chile: A qualitative study of beliefs, emotions, and behaviors toward people with depression.

INTRODUCTION: Depression is one of the leading causes of disability in Chile and significantly affects adults' well-being and social participation. Despite its high prevalence, depression stigma has been scarcely studied in the country. Because its manifestations vary across sociocultural contexts, understanding how it is configured in Chile is essential for developing contextually relevant interventions. Within this framework, depression stigma is examined through its core components -stereotypes, prejudice, and discrimination- by analyzing the beliefs, emotions, and behaviors directed toward…

On dedicated institutions and funding to support disaster risk reduction: Reflections on local instrumentation in Chile.

UNLABELLED: Stakeholders often justify limited disaster risk reduction (DRR) action by citing insufficient funding and a lack of dedicated l … ow the fixation on dedicated laws, institutions and funding has produced a siloed DRR policy. Using Chile as a case, and the implementation of the Law 21.364, it describes the instrumentation created to deal with disasters at the local level, including DRR and emergency plans, as well as new functions and municipal structures. Given Chile's subnational …

"I thought I was normal" children's understanding of overweight and obesity: a qualitative study in chile.

BACKGROUND: Childhood overweight and obesity are prevalent in Chile and globally. Health care responses typically emphasise biomedical and risk-focused approaches, with limited attention to children's own perspectives. OBJECTIVE: This study explored how children clinically classified as overweight or obese understand health, growth and weight within health contexts. METHODS: Participants were recruited from primary care clinics in two municipalities in Santiago, Chile. Semi-structured online interviews were conducted with 18 children aged 10-12 years during COVID-19 restrictions, incorporati…

Increasing dog bites in humans: Indoor and outdoor risk factors and spatiotemporal patterns in Chile.

Dog bites pose a serious global public health problem, leading to at least 14,000 annual deaths globally, primarily from rabies, and contributing to physical injuries, psychological trauma, transmission to other zoonotic diseases, and substantial economic costs. This study aimed to estimate the spatiotemporal distribution of dog bite incidents involving humans in Chile and to analyze the risk factors associated with bites in indoor and outdoor environments. We analyzed data from the Registry System of Biting Animals (SIRAM) in Chile between 2019 and 2024. To examine spatiotemporal patterns of …

Inequality and the marginal well-being costs of lockdowns: the case of Chile's local lockdowns design.

This paper examines how heterogeneous lockdown policies can amplify pre-existing socioeconomic inequalities in well-being during public health crises. Using Chile’s municipality-level heterogeneous COVID-19 lockdown strategy as a case study, we assess whether local quarantines generated a double disadvantage for lower-socioeconomic-status populations: greater exposure to confinement and higher psychological costs when confined. We combine municipal-level lockdown records and socioeconomic data with a novel application of Google Trends to construct real-time indicators of population well-being.…

"I'm Not the Only One": A Qualitative Study on the Experiences of Peer Support for Bipolar Disorder in Chile.

Bipolar disorder (BD) is a chronic mental health condition often associated with emotional isolation, stigma, and social disengagement. While pharmacological and psychotherapeutic interventions remain central to treatment, peer support has emerged as a promising complementary approach that fosters agency, psychosocial recovery, and affective connection. This study explored the perceived effectiveness of Peer Support Groups (also known as Peer Support Circles or CAPs in Spanish)-a pioneering, community-based intervention in Chile for individuals diagnosed with bipolar disorder (BD). The researc…

Airborne Bacterial and Eukaryotic Communities in Temuco, Chile, a City Dominated by Residential Wood Combustion.

Airborne particulate matter (PM) affects human health, especially in heavily polluted regions. This study focused on Temuco, a city dominated by residential wood combustion in southern Chile. For the first time, we characterized airborne eukaryotic microbial communities in this area, alongside a parallel analysis of bacterial communities, and explored their associations with water-soluble inorganic ions (WSIIs) and meteorological variables. Bacterial and eukaryotic communities were profiled using 16S and 18S rRNA gene sequencing, respectively. The results showed that the mean concentrations of…

Morphological and molecular evidence of the Antarctic sleeper shark Somniosus antarcticus (Somniosidae) in northern Chile.

Sleeper sharks (family Somniosidae) are large, slow-growing deep-sea sharks that are rarely documented in the southeastern Pacific, and records from the Chilean waters have remained taxonomically uncertain. Here, we report a confirmed record of a large-bodied southern Somniosus from northern Chile based on a gravid female incidentally captured by a commercial deep-sea longline fishery off Antofagasta and a late-stage male embryo aborted during handling. The embryo measured 90.5 cm in total length and exhibited morphological and meristic characters consistent with large-bodied S. antarcticus, i…
