A systematic review and meta-analysis of enucleation versus pre-enucleation radiotherapy in choroidal melanoma mortality: evidence from 10 comparative studies.

OBJECTIVE: To use a literature review methodology to assess the efficacy of three distinct approaches: enucleation, radiotherapy or radiotherapy prior to enucleation, in reducing patient mortality. METHODS: Computers were used to search databases such as PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, Cochrane Library, and CNKI, as well as the references of pertinent literature. Data were extracted from the included research literature according to the pre-defined data extraction table, encompassing study characteristics, sample size, interventions, outcome measures, etc. The Cochrane risk of bias evaluation

Side effects of proton beam therapy of choroidal melanoma in dependence of the dose to the optic disc and the irradiated length of the optic nerve.

PURPOSE: To analyze the impact of the dose to the optic disc and the irradiated length of the optic nerve on radiation-induced optic neuropathy, radiation-induced retinopathy, iris neovascularization, secondary glaucoma, enucleation, and local tumor control after proton beam therapy (PBT) of choroidal melanoma. METHOD: Retrospective analysis of 1129 patients, who received primary PBT for the treatment of choroidal melanoma with a dose of 60 cobalt gray equivalents (CGE) between 1998 and 2013 at the Helmholtz-Zentrum Berlin, Germany. Kaplan-Meier curves and logrank test have been used for time

Choroid Osteoma in Schimmelpenning-Feuerstein-Mims Syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Schimmelpenning syndrome is a multisystem disorder. CASE CHARACTERISTICS: A term female neonate with sebaceous nevi of the face had choroid osteoma of the right eye. OBSERVATION: At one month of age, the infant was observed to have choroidal neovascularization that was successfully treated with laser photo-coagulation and anti-VEGF. MESSAGE: Choroid osteoma and neovascularization are rare associations of Schimmelpenning syndrome, and should be screened for and managed early.

Lesson of the month 2: A choroid plexus papilloma manifesting as anorexia nervosa in an adult.

A Caucasian female previously diagnosed with anorexia nervosa was referred by psychiatric services to the general medical team. She presented with dehydration, vomiting, weakness, a body mass index of 13 kg/m2 and was treated with intravenous and enteral supplementation. During admission her vomiting worsened and she developed visual hallucinations and confabulation. Neurological examination demonstrated cerebellar signs and bilateral papilloedema on fundoscopy. Subsequent magnetic resonance imaging of the brain revealed a large fourth ventricular tumour causing obstructive hydrocephalus. The

Cytoplasmic 5-Lipoxygenase Staining Is a Highly Sensitive Marker of Human Tumors of the Choroid Plexus.

OBJECTIVES: To determine the immunoreactivity status of 5-lipoxygenase (5-LO) in normal tissues, in tumors of the human choroid plexus, and in other brain tumors. METHODS: In total, 135 cases of various types of brain tumors were selected. Tissue samples were immunostained with a rabbit polyclonal anti-5-LO antibody. RESULTS: Nuclear reactivity was observed in most brain tumors, with most of the positive tumor cells exhibiting low-level reactivity. Cytoplasmic strong immunoreactivity for 5-LO (2+ or 3+) was only observed in 8.8% of astrocytic tumors, 0% of oligodendrogliomatous tumors, 5.6%

Evanescent vaso-occlusive choroidal pseudo-tumor with acute painful onset: a presumed vortex vein occlusion.

PURPOSE: The aim of our study was to describe the clinical presentation of an unusual evanescent, exudative, choroidal pseudo-tumor with acute painful onset, and propose a pathogenesis. METHODS: We carried out a retrospective, observational study using the case series of three patients presenting with an evanescent, exudative, choroidal pseudo-tumor with acute painful onset. Ultra-widefield fluorescein and indocyanine green angiography (ICGA) using the Heidelberg Retina Angiograph and the Staurenghi 230 SLO Retina Lens were used to propose a pathogenesis of this unusual entity. RESULTS: In a

Sublingual Gland Carcinoma Revealed by Choroidal Metastasis.

A 65-year-old man presented with a 1-week history of left eye distortion. An elevated choroidal lesion covering 6 disc diameters was found in the posterior retina of the left eye. Systemic examination revealed sublingual gland carcinoma and multiple lung metastases, and the diagnosis was choroidal metastasis from sublingual gland carcinoma. Following chemotherapy and radiation therapy, the choroidal lesion shrunk and the patient's visual acuity improved. The patient died 23 months after his first visit. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first reported case of choroidal metastasis from
