A reliable and sensitive method has been developed to assess the concentrations of the hypnotic drug triazolam in human tissues, including putrefied tissues. The method involves a 3-step solvent extraction, clean-up on a silica gel column and gas chromatography using a nitrogen phosphorus detector and a capillary column. Estazolam was used as an internal standard. The calibration curve was linear over the concentration range 1 ng/g-1 microgram/g and the lower limit of detection was 0.5 ng/g. A forensic study was performed on the toxicological effects of triazolam using putrefied tissues.

A novel assay method for the determination of atropine in biological fluids is presented. Atropine is extracted and subsequently hydrolyzed. The generated tropine is them derivatized to heptafluorobutyryl-tropine, which is measured by GLC-MS. Base peaks m/z 124 and m/z 127 are simultaneously monitored. Amino asid metabolism was studied by thin layer chromatography in 25 Pasteurella multocida strains isolated from various manifestations of the disease chicken septicemia. Six amino acids were used: DL-ornithin, L-cystein, L-asparagin, DL-serin, L-arginin and Acidum glutaminicum. The Pasteurella strains studied include in their metabolism the amino acid asparagin, but serin and cystein are excluded. The capacity of some chemically treated porous glass to adsorb tissue culture virus of tick-borne encephalitis was studied. Chemical binding of albumin and succinanhydride with the porous glass matrix was found to eliminate virion adsorption on the carrier surface. This permitted to carry out gel filtration chromatography of several virus strains and to obtain highly purified preparations of tick-borne encephalitis virus. Gel filtration on modified porous glass with different pore sizes was used for the determinations of cromatographic radius of virus particle.

Alkylation of barbituric acids and diphenylhydantoin with pentafluorobenzyl bromide is described; the reaction is quantitative in the presence of excess of triethylamine. The electron-capture detector response of the derivatives is high, ranging from 2 to 8 x 10(-17) moles/sec. The derivatives demonstrate excellent peak symmetry and are well suited to quantitative analysis. The structures of the derivatives have been confirmed by mass spectrometry.
