This paper describes techniques employed at a large semiconductor manufacturing plant to analyze for organic contaminants in production areas. Activated carbon was employed in the sampling procedure as the collection medium. Vapors of a number of common industrial solvents were absorbed and collected on the activated carbon surface at concentrations in the ppm and sub-ppm range. Cell walls from Lactobacillus fermenti were prepared by differential centrifugation of disrupted cells, with and without trypsin treatment. This paper introduces a method for determining the specific surface area (SSA) of biomass activated carbon (BAC) using a tracer-based headspace gas chromatography (HS-GC) technique. The method relies on the adsorption equilibrium of methanol on BAC samples at elevated temperature. A mathematical model allows for the calculation of SSA from the methanol signal obtained during the headspace analysis.
