[3H]Forskolin binding sites were identified using membranes prepared from the iris-ciliary body of adult, albino rabbits. Scatchard analysis of saturation binding experiments demonstrated that [3H]forskolin bound to a single population of high affinity sites. The Kd and Bmax values were 8.7 +/- 0.9 nM and 119.0 +/- 30.9 fmol/mg prot. using membranes prepared from frozen tissue and 17.0 +/- 6.2 nM and 184.4 +/- 47.2 fmol/mg prot. using fresh tissue. The rabbit iris-ciliary body contains 78 +/- 6 ng/gm serotonin (5-HT) while the amine content in the aqueous humor is less than 0.01 ng/100 microliter. The low levels of endogenous 5-HT in the iris-ciliary body could not be directly detected by immunocytochemistry. The authors studied the mitotic activity of 21 choroidal and ciliary body melanomas treated by external beam radiotherapy (2000 rad in 5 fractions over 5-7 days) before enucleation and 21 case-by-case matched nonirradiated uveal melanomas. Clinical risk factors were assessed prospectively in a nonrandomized concurrent observational study of 237 patients with posterior uveal malignant melanoma. Forskolin has been reported to stimulate cAMP formation and reduce intraocular pressure in rabbit and primate eyes. A slow-growing xanthomatous tumour which diffusely infiltrated the iris and ciliary body of a dog was composed of large, pale, vacuolated cells which contained scattered fine pigment granules. Electron microscopy revealed coalescing vacuoles, lamellar membranous structures, and small groups of melanosomes in the cytoplasm, suggesting melanocytic origin. The lesion resembled balloon cell melanoma of the ciliary body of man. The behaviour of the tumour was benign. This is a clinical and pathological entity which has not been reported previously in the dog.

The effect of hyaluronate on lysosomal enzyme activities in bovine ciliary body and iris was studied in vitro. Hyaluronates from both the human umbilical cord and bovine vitreous inhibited the activities of cathepsin B and acid phosphatase. Cathepsin D, beta-N-acetyl-glucosaminidase, beta-D-glucuronidase and alpha-L-fucosidase activities were not affected by the hyaluronate.

The authors report on the results of cyclocryotherapy of the ciliary body applied in 79 eyes with secondary glaucoma of various etiology. In 40% of the cases regulation of intraocular pressure and freedom from pain were achieved during an eleven-month follow-up. The results were remarkably favorable in cases of neovascular glaucoma (regulation of IOP in 50%) and secondary glaucoma following iridocyclitis and intraocular hemorrhages, which usually have a very poor prognosis.

One hundred and sixteen patients with suspected malignant melanoma of the choroid and ciliary body were observed for evidence of tumor growth prior to enucleation. All patients were followed for a minimum of five years after tumor detection. The tumor failed to grow in 69 patients, and none developed evidence of metastatic melanoma. At the University eye clinic in Mainz a new method was carried out on 40 patients to coagulate the ciliary body whereby this was laid open and directly coagulated. In the post operative stage within the first 4 weeks a further increase of pressure could be observed in 3 cases only. The other patients, who have been observed up to 15 months, did not show any further increase of pressure and are well. This operation method is commendable especially in the cases of hemorhagic and absolute glaucoma.

Acute anterior immunogenic uveitis of varying degree was induced in rabbits by the injection of human serum albumin into the vitreous body. After fixation and drying by the critical point method, the lens, the zonules, the vitreous and, in some specimens, coagulated exudate were removed by careful dissection. With respect to the effect of surgical treatment upon the eye and the subsequent tumor behavior, 107 cases of ciliary body melanoma treated by iridocyclectomy were studied. Six cases are reported, in which an excision of the ciliary-body has been performed: 5 cases with secondary closed-angle glaucoma, and one case with secondary open-angle glaucoma. All eyes were aphakic, and in all cases other surgical interventions preceded. The ciliary-body excision is the easiest exactly doseable procedure, compared with other procedures regarding the ciliary-body.
