Sister-chromatid exchanges (SCEs) induced by mitomycin C (MMC), 4-nitroquinoline-1-oxide (4NQO) or UV-light in cultured Chinese hamster ovary cells (CHO K-1 cells) were enhanced by cinoxate (2-ethoxyethyl p-methoxycinnamate) or methyl sinapate (methyl 3,5-dimethoxy 4-hydroxycinnamate). Both substances are cinnamate derivatives and cinoxate is commonly used as a cosmetic UV absorber. Methyl sinapate also increased the frequency of cells with chromosome aberrations in the CHO K-1 cells treated with MMC, 4NQO or UV. These increasing effects of methyl sinapate were critical in the G1 phase of the

Only seldom have food additives been shown to cause true allergic (immunological) reactions. Adverse effects due to various pharmacological or other mechanisms are much more common. The individual tolerance may be decreased for one reason or another, and may fluctuate from time to time. Many patients suffering from food additive reactions have atopic constitutions and such clinical symptoms as flexural dermatitis, rhinitis and asthma. The most important skin symptoms caused by food additives are urticaria, angioneurotic edema, and contact urticaria. Azo dyes, benzoic acid and several other com

Salicinoids are specialized benzenoid (C6-C1) metabolites characteristic of the Salicaceae family. Although salicinoids have long been recognized as effective defense compounds and pharmacologically active constituents in willows and poplars, the biosynthetic pathway underlying their formation remains largely unresolved. Through integrated metabolomic and transcriptomic analyses of black cottonwood (Populus trichocarpa) roots, we identified candidate genes involved in salicinoid biosynthesis belonging to the cytochrome P450 monooxygenase family 92 (CYP92) and the progesterone 5β-reductase/irid

One approach to combating the surge in bacterial antimicrobial resistance is to use adjuvants that sensitize drug-resistant strains to conventional antibiotics. Here, we evaluated 24 pure bioactive compounds for their antibiotic adjuvant activity against a multidrug-resistant strain of Salmonella Typhimurium (DT104). All 24 bioactive compounds exhibited measurable antibacterial activity against DT104, with MIC values ranging from 0.036 to 4 mg/mL. Moreover, four bioactive compounds, namely p-coumaric acid, 4-hydroxycinnamic acid, itaconic acid, and cinnamic acid, sensitized DT104 to five antib

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is the most common liver disease, with advanced stages potentially progressing to hepatocellular carcinoma. It is a multifactorial condition associated with metabolic syndrome, diabetes, and hormonal imbalance, leading to metabolic alterations that are intensified by inflammation. An important additional factor that amplifies these effects is oxidative stress, which interacts with inflammatory pathways and contributes to disease progression. This review evaluates evidence from in vitro, in vivo, and clinical studies on widely investigated natural compo

Invasive candidiasis, particularly caused by drug-resistant strains, has emerged as a significant contributor to morbidity and mortality among hospitalized patients worldwide, posing a serious public health challenge. With the rising resistance to conventional antifungal agents such as azoles and echinocandins, the search for novel, effective, and low-toxicity antifungal lead compounds from natural products has become increasingly urgent. Cinnamon (Cinnamomum spp.), an ancient spice and medicinal plant, is rich in active components, notably cinnamaldehyde, eugenol, and cinnamic acid, which exh

Leaves from California yerba santa (Eriodictyon californicum) have been used historically by indigenous peoples for medicinal purposes. Recent research has ascribed potential pharmaceutical effects to leaf polyphenols, without a consideration of other constituents. Based on prior analyses of polyphenols in leaves sampled in nature, five accessions known to be rich in sterubin and five accessions known to be rich in eriolic acid C were grown from seeds in Ontario, Oregon, and samples of their leaves were harvested and evaluated for their essential oil and polyphenol contents. The major essentia

Although numerous hydrolases have shown promiscuous acyltransferase activity in aqueous media, none have been reported to efficiently synthesize feruloyl esters. Here, we demonstrate that a ferulic acid esterase (AmCE1) from Anaeromyces mucronatus functions as a promiscuous hydrolase/acyltransferase, exhibiting unprecedented acyltransferase activity in water by efficiently catalyzing the transfer of bulky aromatic acyl donors and acceptors. This function was rapidly identified using a novel precipitation-based screening method, the Ferulate-acyltransferase (Ferulate-AcT) assay. We subsequently

Salinity stress is a major constraint affecting pomegranate productivity and fruit quality. This study evaluated the effects of strigolactone (SL) at 15 and 30 μM on alleviating salinity stress and improving fruit yield and quality in pomegranate trees over two consecutive seasons. SL treatments significantly enhanced yield per tree, fruit weight, total soluble solids, firmness, ascorbic acid, and anthocyanin content compared with untreated trees. In addition, SL improved relative water content, indicating improved plant water status under saline conditions. SL application reduced membrane per

Aberrant self-assembly of ataxin-3 (ATX3) into amyloid aggregates is a key pathological event in spinocerebellar ataxia type 3 (SCA3). Bioactive nutraceutical compounds, particularly polyphenols, have emerged as promising candidates for targeting protein aggregation and cellular stress responses associated with neurodegenerative disorders. Here, we investigated cinnamon bud extract as a natural source of neuroprotective molecules, focusing on its total extract (Etot) and two bioactive fractions: a polyphenol-enriched fraction (Fr. B) and a cinnamaldehyde-rich fraction (Fr. C). By integrating b

Nitric oxide (NO) breaks a seed's dormancy and stimulates germination by signaling. However, the key physiological metabolic pathways and molecular regulatory mechanisms are still unclear. Therefore, this study used physiological, transcriptomic, and metabolomics methods to analyze the key genes and metabolites involved in the NO regulation of plant embryo germination and their potential regulatory mechanisms. The physiological analysis results indicate that the appropriate concentration of NO increased the content of NO and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) in cells, stimulated the synthesis of ethyle

Novel derivatives of valproic acid with biologically active moieties, such as thiomorpholine, 4-aminopyridine, serine methyl ester, trolox and the cinnamic acid derivative [(E)-3-(3,5-di-tert-butyl-4-hydroxyphenyl)acrylic acid], were synthesized at satisfactory yields. The conjugation of these moieties was based on the rationale of design and evaluation of compounds with selected structural characteristics, aiming at derivatives with multiple targets. These compounds reduced acute inflammation considerably and, in most cases, more than several highly used, well-known, non-steroidal anti-inflam

Kidney vetch (Anthyllis vulneraria L.) is an old medicinal plant mostly known for ethnomedicine. Nowadays, its herbal parts are only scarcely used in phytotherapy, whereas medicinal applications of roots have not been reported so far. In this study, we investigated ethyl acetate (EtOAc) extracts obtained by solvent partition of an acetone/water crude extract of A. vulneraria roots. Mainly prenylated chalcones, flavones, isoflavones, and cinnamic acid derivatives dominated the compound profile when the extracts were studied by HPLC-ESI-(HR)MSn and GC-MS analysis. Two main chalcones (23 and 24)

Berberis integerrima Bunge is a valuable plant of the Berberidaceae family used in medicine and industry. The properties of the different parts of this plant vary and depend on the distribution of its secondary metabolites, including alkaloids and phenolic compounds. Here, we aimed to evaluate and compare phenolics and alkaloids of the different organs and tissues of B. integerrima. Our results showed that the highest content of phenolic compounds was found in the fruit and leaf, while the total alkaloid level was higher in the root. In the fruit, leaf and stem, the main phenolic acids were ca

Despite the established link between neuropathic pain and abnormal mitochondrial fission in neurons, the specific role of mitochondrial fission protein 1 (FIS1) in this process remains to be fully elucidated. In this study, the subjects we investigated were 6-8-week-old male mice. Comprehensive behavioral tests and immunostaining, along with Western blot analysis, revealed that neuropathic pain induced by spared nerve injury (SNI) upregulated FIS1 expression in the spinal cord dorsal horn (SC-DH). Furthermore, artificially upregulated FIS1 in SC-DH caused hyperalgesia behaviors in normal mice,
