A reassessment of the infra-species diversity patterns in the wine-associated Oenococcus oeni.

Oenococcus oeni is the predominant species of lactic acid bacteria in wine, where it carries out malolactic fermentation (MLF), which helps to ensure and preserve the quality of the wine. Today, existing combinations of grape varieties, soil composition, fluctuating climatic parameters, and specific technical processes implemented by wineries lead to incredibly varied wine compositions that pose challenges for spontaneous MLF. Commercial starter cultures have been developed for use as inoculants. However, their effectiveness in ensuring consistent and reliable MLF is also limited in modern win

Meta-analysis of seasonal dynamics of parasite infections in aquatic ecosystems.

Seasonal infection dynamics characterise many host-parasite interactions, as abiotic conditions drive fundamental biological processes in both hosts and parasites. The extent to which seasonal cycles in parasite abundance are universal, and whether the same underlying mechanisms are responsible for seasonality across different host-parasite associations, have received little attention to date. Here, global patterns of seasonal infection dynamics are tested using a meta-analysis of 693 seasonal contrasts in the local abundance of metazoan parasites in aquatic vertebrates, representing 343 paras

Real-time PCR detection of Toxoplasma gondii in surface water samples in São Paulo, Brazil.

Water is considered an important vehicle for the spread of human toxoplasmosis in several countries. Toxoplasma gondii oocysts can persist in the environment for long periods, being highly resistant to the various chemical inactivation processes commonly used by water supply systems, distinctly from simple filtration and flocculation that are efficient in removing oocysts from drinking water. The existing methodologies for identification and quantification of this parasite in water samples are not standardized and have limitations. This study aimed to evaluate the presence of T. gondii oocysts

Evidence for Geographic Variation in Life-Cycle Processes Affecting Phenology of the Lyme Disease Vector Ixodes scapularis (Acari: Ixodidae) in the United States.

The seasonal activity pattern of immature Ixodes scapularis Say (Acari: Ixodidae) varies geographically in the United States, which may affect the efficiency of transmission cycles of pathogens transmitted by this species. To study the factors that determine seasonality, a multiyear study at seven sites across the geographic range of I. scapularis systematically collected questing ticks by flagging/dragging, and feeding ticks by capture of their hosts. The observed phenology patterns were consistent with previous studies reporting geographic variation in seasonal tick activity. Predictions of

A Theoretical Analysis of the Geography of Schistosomiasis in Burkina Faso Highlights the Roles of Human Mobility and Water Resources Development in Disease Transmission.

We study the geography of schistosomiasis across Burkina Faso by means of a spatially explicit model of water-based disease dynamics. The model quantitatively addresses the geographic stratification of disease burden in a novel framework by explicitly accounting for drivers and controls of the disease, including spatial information on the distributions of population and infrastructure, jointly with a general description of human mobility and climatic/ecological drivers. Spatial patterns of disease are analysed by the extraction and the mapping of suitable eigenvectors of the Jacobian matrix su

Soursop juice enhanced seminal antioxidant defence and semen quality of rabbit bucks in extremely dry climatic condition of Southwestern Nigeria.

Heat induced stress associated with dry climatic conditions in the tropics does have adverse effects reproduction in rabbits, and this in-turn impacts negatively on the income of rabbit farmers. However, natural products might prove to be a reliable, safe and cheap remedy for ameliorating reproductive such anomalies in rabbits. The potential of soursop for mitigating heat induced reproductive deficiency in rabbit bucks was investigated during the peak of dry climatic conditions in southwestern Nigeria. Sixty mixed breed (New Zealand white x Chinchilla) adult rabbit bucks were allotted to five

Aerosol iodide accelerates reactive nitrogen cycling in the marine atmosphere.

Reactive nitrogen plays critical roles in atmospheric chemistry, climate, and geochemical cycles, yet its sources in the marine atmosphere, particularly the cause of the puzzling daytime peaks of nitrous acid (HONO), remain unexplained. Here we reveal that iodide enhances HONO production during aqueous nitrate photolysis by over tenfold under typical marine conditions. Laboratory experiments and molecular simulations confirm that HONO formation from nitrate photolysis is a surface-dependent process, and the extreme surface propensity of iodide facilitates nitrate enrichment at interfaces, redu

A systematic study on simulation and modeling of a solar biogas reactor.

Источник пометил публикацию как отозванную

This paper presents an overview of solar biogas simulation and optimizing performance of biogas using a renewable energy source such as solar energy. Biogas has many benefits to our environment and climate. Biogas is a renewable fuel produced by the breakdown of organic matter such as food scraps and animal waste, and we can use the biogas to generate electricity. For simulation of biogas, we used RStoic and RCSTR rectors. A feed rate of 0.333 kg/day wet waste and 0.333 kg/day water was used to achieve the maximum biomethane (CH4) production rate of 85.5627% at a temperature of 318.15 K and 15

Integrated Metabolomics and Machine Learning Reveal Drying-Dependent Phenolic Markers in Asteraceae Edible Plants From Ulleungdo Island.

Ulleungdo Island, Korea, features a distinctive oceanic climate that supports a diverse array of edible wild plants traditionally processed through blanching and sun-drying. Despite their cultural and commercial significance, the effects of traditional drying methods on phytochemical composition remain inadequately understood. This study investigated processing-induced metabolic changes in three representative Asteraceae species-Aster pseudoglehnii, Cirsium nipponicum, and Solidago virgaurea-using integrated metabolomics and machine learning approaches. Untargeted UHPLC-HRMS/MS profiling ident

Haplotype-resolved autotetraploid genome of Dioscorea nipponica provides insights into recent polyploidization, metabolic rewiring, and environmental adaptation.

Whole-genome duplication (WGD, or polyploidization) is a major evolutionary force in plants, yet the genomic, transcriptional, and metabolic consequences of autopolyploidy remain less understood than those of allopolyploidy. Dioscorea nipponica, a medicinal species producing diosgenin-type steroidal saponins, harbors both diploid and autopolyploid populations, providing a unique system to investigate these processes. Here, we present a haplotype-resolved, chromosome-scale genome assembly of autotetraploid D. nipponica (2n = 4x = 40). Comparative and population genomic analyses indicate a singl

Integrating GIS and spatial analysis for mosquito-borne disease risk assessment: A Case Study of Sambalpur City.

BACKGROUND OBJECTIVES: The mounting urban health challenges caused by mosquito-borne diseases-including Dengue, Malaria, and Japanese Encephalitis (JE)- in Indian cities are partly due to rapid urbanisation processes and due to climate change. This research assesses the heterogeneous risk of mosquito-borne diseases (MBD) in Sambalpur City (Odisha, India) and uses geospatial analysis to identify environmental, climatic, and service provision drivers of transmission. METHODS: Multi-temporal satellite imagery (Landsat 8 OLI/TIRS) and incidence records were analysed to provide a comprehensive und

Reference genome bias in light of species-specific chromosomal reorganization and translocations.

BACKGROUND: Whole-genome sequencing efforts, have during the past decade, unveiled the central role of genomic rearrangements-such as chromosomal inversions-in evolutionary processes, including local adaptation in a wide range of taxa. However, employment of reference genomes from distantly or even closely related species for mapping and the subsequent variant calling can lead to errors and/or biases in the datasets generated for downstream analyses. RESULTS: Here, we capitalize on the recently generated chromosome-anchored genome assemblies for Arctic cod (Arctogadus glacialis), polar cod (B

Distribution, removal and potential factors affecting antibiotics occurrence in leachate from municipal solid waste incineration plants in China.

Leachate from municipal solid waste (MSW) incineration harbors a plethora of contaminants, including antibiotics and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs). However, the understanding of such leachate is markedly scant in comparison to that of landfill leachate. In this study, the distribution and removal of 8 sulfonamides (SAs), 4 quinolones (FQs), and 4 macrolides (MLs) antibiotics in leachate from 14 MSW incineration plants in representative cities across different regions of China were investigated. In addition, potential factors affecting the contamination levels of antibiotics and ARGs in fr

Genome-wide single nucleotide polymorphisms reveal recurrent waves of speciation in niche-pockets, in Europe's most venomous snake.

Within the Balkan Peninsula, topographic and climatic agents have promoted biodiversity and shaped the speciation history of many ectotherms. Here, we targeted an iconic European reptile, the nose-horned viper species-complex (Vipera ammodytes), and explored its spatial and temporal evolution. We (i) utilized genome-wide single nucleotide polymorphisms to infer genetic structure and build a time-calibrated species-tree, and (ii) applied species distribution modelling with niche-divergence tests among major phylogenomic clades. Geographically structured genetic diversity was found. Cycles of re

Effects of life history stage and climatic conditions on fecal egg counts in plains zebras (Equus quagga) in the Serengeti National Park.

In wildlife, endoparasite burden can be affected by host life history stage, environmental conditions, host abundance, and parasite co-infections. We tested the effects of these factors on gastrointestinal parasite infection in plains zebras (Equus quagga) in the Serengeti ecosystem, Tanzania, using fecal egg counts of two nematode families (Strongylidae and Ascarididae) and the presence/absence of cestode (Anoplocephalidae) eggs. We predicted higher egg counts of Strongylidae and Ascarididae, and increased likelihood of Anoplocephalidae infection in individuals (1) during energetically costly

Phylogeography and historical demography of the anadromous fish Leucopsarion petersii in relation to geological history and oceanography around the Japanese Archipelago.

Phylogeographical patterns of marine and diadromous organisms are often influenced by dynamic ocean histories. For example, the marine realm around the Japanese Archipelago is an interesting area for phylogeographical research because of the wide variation in the environments driven by repeated shifts in sea level in the Quaternary. We analysed mitochondrial cyt b gene and nuclear myh6 gene sequences for individuals collected from throughout the range of the anadromous fish Leucopsarion petersii to assess the lineage divergence, phylogeographical pattern and historical demography in relation t

Novel findings on trypanosomatid chemotherapy using DNA topoisomerase inhibitors.

Trypanosomatid (order Kinetoplastida)-borne neglected tropical diseases - African and American trypanosomiasis and leishmaniasis - are amongst the most devastating health threats of underdeveloped, developing and poor countries. Climatic changes due to global warming, tourism exchange and increasing migratory fluxes are re-distributing the endemic subtropical location of these diseases to a new scenario with a rising presence in developed countries during the last decades. In addition, the proved opportunistic transmission of these diseases through contaminated syringes shared by drug users, i
