BACKGROUND: Down syndrome regression disorder (DSRD) is a rare phenomenon of regression impacting individuals with Down syndrome (DS), occurring in adolescence to early adulthood and characterized by acute-to-subacute deterioration of functioning. Cognitive and behavioural phenotypes associated with DSRD have been examined using physician checklists but not yet through direct assessments or caregiver questionnaires. The goal of this initial study was to explore the cognitive and behavioural features of those with DS and regression (DS+regression) through direct assessment and informant questio

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVE: Prognostication of critically ill children appearing acutely comatose remains challenging. Event-related potentials (ERPs) using electroencephalography (EEG) offer a noninvasive method to detect covert consciousness. These include the mismatched negativity (MMN) and P300b responses. We investigated ERPs using the auditory local-global oddball paradigm to assess inattentive or attentive cortical processing in critically ill, clinically unresponsive children.
METHODS: We prospectively enrolled pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) patients undergoing continuous EEG with Gla

Cognitive inflexibility, a reduced capacity to shift mental set or update behavior when circumstances change, is a significant feature of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). However, while cognitive inflexibility is superficially a coherent entity, it appears to engage a range of distinct cognitive processes. This raises the question of how far deficits in different tasks involve the same core dysfunction and how far the dysfunctions are unique but superficially have similar results. Here we detail the neural basis of OCD deficits across eight tasks that challenge different aspects of cogniti

Panic disorder is a highly prevalent and impairing diagnosis in veterans. Despite consistent efficacy findings in community samples, few studies have investigated evidence-based psychotherapies in veterans with panic disorder, limiting the understanding of their utility and deployment in Veterans Affairs (VA) settings. The present study preliminarily investigated cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) for panic disorder via a non-controlled design in a treatment-seeking veteran sample with panic disorder at the VA. Of the 41 veterans initiating treatment, 28 (68.3%) participants completed at least

Introduction: Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is clinically heterogeneous, and the neurocognitive characteristics of autogenous and reactive obsessional presentations remain insufficiently understood. This study compared neurocognitive performance and exploratory clinical-cognitive associations in strictly classified autogenous and reactive OCD presentations. Methods: This cross-sectional study included 67 outpatients with OCD classified as having reactive (n = 35) or autogenous (n = 32) presentations based on clinical evaluation and the Yale-Brown Obsessive Compulsive Scale Symptom Checkl

Many people with bipolar disorder (BD) experience persistent cognitive deficits. Sleep spindles have been linked to cognitive ability in healthy populations and psychotic disorders. While there is preliminary evidence for altered spindle activity in BD, research directly examining the association between sleep spindle parameters and cognitive performance in this population is lacking. Therefore, our primary objective was to examine the association between fast spindle density and episodic memory performance in euthymic individuals with BD. As exploratory analyses, we looked at associations bet

BACKGROUND: Major depressive disorder (MDD) is often accompanied by cognitive impairment; however, the cognitive heterogeneity of MDD and its neurobiological context remain poorly understood.
METHODS: A total of 198 participants with MDD and 275 HCs underwent multi-domain cognitive assessments and multi-modal MRI acquisition. A semi-supervised approach was applied to identify cognitive dimensions of MDD, and individual-level structural-enriched functional networks (SFNs) were constructed. Network-based statistics were applied to characterize network-level associations between structural-funct

BACKGROUND: Visual cognitive tests that rely on saccades may be affected by internuclear ophthalmoplegia (INO), irrespective of cognitive ability. INO and cognitive decline are common in people with multiple sclerosis (PwMS). We assessed the impact of INO on visual versus non-visual cognitive tests in PwMS.
METHODS: PwMS (n=197) completed auditory and visual neuropsychological tests, and demographically corrected Z-scores were obtained. INO was quantified using the DEMoNS infrared oculography protocol, applying the versional dysconjugacy index (VDI) of area under the saccadic trajectory (AUC)

Dementia, including Alzheimer's disease (AD) and frontotemporal dementia (FTD), presents critical challenges for correctional systems, particularly as global populations age. AD, affecting 60-80% of dementia cases, primarily impairs memory and cognition in individuals over 65. In contrast, FTD, rarer than AD but not uncommon in those under 65, affects the frontal and temporal brain regions, leading to deficits in social behavior, language, and impulse control, often resulting in antisocial actions and legal consequences. Behavioral variant FTD is especially associated with socially inappropria

Despite the significant number of impairments shared by diagnostic groups on the schizophrenia-phenotypic-spectrum, no work has directly compared neuro- and social-cognition of individuals with schizotypal personality disorder (SPD) with that of schizophrenia. This is the first study to compare social-cognition and neuro-cognition across schizophrenia-spectrum-diagnostic groups and explore associations (1) between neuro- and social-cognition in these groups and (2) between change-over-time (nine-month follow-up) in cognition and negative-symptom-severity. This study identified 127 age- and gen

BACKGROUND: There is considerable variability in the diagnosis, evaluation and management of cognitive disorders in Parkinson's disease (PD) across clinical services. A review of guidelines and relevant literature will provide recommendations to guide clinical decision-making. The present review aimed to summarise and critically appraise current recommendations for the diagnosis, evaluation and management of cognitive disorders in PD.
METHOD: Five academic databases (PubMed, SCOPUS, Medline, PsycINFO, CINAHL) and five grey literature databases were systematically searched in August 2024 by tw

BACKGROUND: Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) may include rigid thoughts, interpersonal difficulties, unstable identity, and the presentation of intense and volatile emotions; the leading indicator for this condition is symptom severity (SS). Within this spectrum, there could be subjective cognitive complaints (SCC) that may worsen the severity of the clinical condition. The present study aimed to compare SCC scores between BPD participants and a group of control subjects (CS) and to determine the association between BPD symptom severity and SCC in participants with BPD.
METHODS: 102 part

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the most common cause of cognitive decline. Among the various susceptibility genes, the gene of apolipoprotein E (APOE) is probably the most important. It may be present in three allelic forms, termed ε2, ε3 and ε4, and the most common genotype is the ε3/ε3. Recently, it has been observed that subjects with the ε4/ε4 genotype may show near-full penetrance of AD biology (pathology and biomarkers), leading to the suggestion that ε4 homozygosity may represent a distinct genetic type of AD. The aim of the present study was to investigate the role of ε4 homozygosity or h

BACKGROUND: Structural brain alterations in bipolar disorder (BD) have been widely reported, yet the hierarchical organization of cortical morphometric networks and their molecular and cognitive underpinnings remain unclear.
METHODS: We applied the morphometric inverse divergence (MIND) network approach to structural MRI data from 49 BD patients and 119 healthy controls. Principal MIND gradients were derived using diffusion map embedding, followed by multiscale analyses linking gradient alterations to neurotransmitter systems, cognitive-behavioral domains, and transcriptomic profiles from the

BACKGROUND: Cognitive deficits are common in individuals with bipolar disorder (BD), but there is considerable variability in cognitive functioning. Childhood maltreatment (CM), which is frequently reported in BD, has been linked to poorer cognitive performance, potentially through mechanisms such as inflammation. However, the relationship between CM and global cognition and the mediating role of inflammation in BD warrant further investigation.
METHODS: The study sample consisted of 112 BD individuals and 83 healthy controls (HCs). Participants completed the MATRICS Consensus Cognitive Batte

BACKGROUND: Eating disorders (EDs), particularly Anorexia Nervosa (AN) and Bulimia Nervosa (BN), are complex psychiatric conditions marked by alterations in cognition, emotional regulation, and interoception. Accumulating evidence suggests that these behavioral features are underpinned by structural and functional brain abnormalities.
OBJECTIVE: This systematic review aims to synthesize recent neuroimaging findings, particularly resting-state functional MRI and functional connectivity studies on cognitive and neural alterations in eating disorders (EDs).
METHODS: Following PRISMA guidelines
