Digital Game-Based Phonics Instruction Promotes Print Knowledge in Pre-Readers at Cognitive Risk for Dyslexia.

Dyslexia is targeted most effectively when (1) interventions are provided preventively, before the onset of reading instruction, and (2) remediation programs combine letter-sound training with phoneme blending. Given the growing potential of technology in educational contexts, there has been a considerable increase of letter-sound trainings embedded in digital serious games. One such intervention is GraphoGame. Yet, current evidence on the preventive impact of GraphoGame is limited by the lack of adaptation of the original learning content to the skills of pre-readers, short training duration,

Visual attention and neural oscillations in reading and dyslexia: Are they possible targets for remediation?

After decades of finding a range of cognitive functions both in visual and phonological domains that correlate with reading performance, there are in recent years attempts to solve the causation versus correlation dilemma in finding a core deficit in developmental dyslexia (DD). Thus, longitudinal studies that aim to predict reading difficulties from studies done in pre-reading years and reading-level matched studies that try to factor out the effect due to lack of reading in DD cohorts, have helped identify two possible candidates to be added to the classical phonological suspect. One is a de

Evaluation of an exercise-based treatment for children with reading difficulties.

An evaluation is reported of an exercise-based approach to remediation of dyslexia-related disorders. Pupils in three years of a Warwickshire junior school were screened for risk of literacy difficulty using the Dyslexia Screening Test (DST). The 35 children scoring 0.4 or over on the DST were divided randomly into two groups matched for age and DST score. One quarter of the participants had an existing diagnosis of dyslexia, dyspraxia or ADHD. Both groups received the same treatment at school but the intervention group used the DDAT exercise programme daily at home. Performance on the DST and

A narrative review on the neurobiology of lucid dreaming: mechanisms and therapeutic potential.

Источник пометил публикацию как отозванную

BACKGROUND: Lucid dreaming (LD), which involves being aware of and controlling one's dreams, is of particular interest in the study of consciousness and has potential therapeutic applications. In this narrative review, we highlight the neurobiological aspects of LD, specifically its mechanisms associated with the activation of prefrontal and parietal areas, increased gamma oscillations, and the influence of cholinergic and dopaminergic signaling, primarily during rapid eye movement (REM) sleep. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate human data on brain mechanisms and clinical effects, synthesizing the neurob

Effects of endurance training on brain structures in chronic schizophrenia patients and healthy controls.

The objective of this longitudinal magnetic resonance (MR) imaging study was to examine the effects of endurance training on hippocampal and grey matter volumes in schizophrenia patients and healthy controls. 20 chronic schizophrenia patients and 21 age- and gender-matched healthy controls underwent 3months of endurance training (30min, 3 times per week). 19 additionally recruited schizophrenia patients played table soccer ("foosball" in the USA) over the same period. MR imaging with 3D-volumetric T1-weighted sequences was performed on a 3T MR scanner at baseline, after 6weeks and after the 3-

Reliability, sensitivity, and predictive value of fMRI during multiple object tracking as a marker of cognitive training gain in combination with tDCS in stroke survivors.

Computerized cognitive training (CCT) combined with transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) has showed some promise in alleviating cognitive impairments in patients with brain disorders, but the robustness and possible mechanisms are unclear. In this prospective double-blind randomized clinical trial, we investigated the feasibility and effectiveness of combining CCT and tDCS, and tested the predictive value of and training-related changes in fMRI-based brain activation during attentive performance (multiple object tracking) obtained at inclusion, before initiating training, and after t

Multicenter Evaluation of Memory Remediation in Traumatic Brain Injury With Donepezil: A Randomized Controlled Trial.

Memory impairments are common chronic and functionally important consequences of traumatic brain injury (TBI). Among patients with persistent verbal memory impairments due to TBI-related cholinergic deficits, donepezil (an acetylcholinesterase inhibitor) may improve these and related problems. The Multicenter Evaluation of Memory Remediation in TBI with Donepezil (MEMRI-TBI-D) study, a four-site, randomized, parallel-group, double-blind, placebo-controlled, 10-week clinical trial, evaluated the efficacy of donepezil on verbal memory impairments, co-occurring cognitive and noncognitive neuropsy

Fluoxetine normalizes the effects of prenatal maternal stress on depression- and anxiety-like behaviors in mouse dams and male offspring.

Maternal depression during pregnancy and the postpartum period (lactation) is a common debilitating condition affecting mother-fetus/-infant interactions, which can be a risk factor for cognitive and affective disorders in mothers and their children. Selective-serotonin-reuptake-inhibitor-(SSRI) pharmacotherapy is known as the first-line treatment of maternal depression. However, its use during pregnancy and lactation is a topic of concern. The present study aimed to investigate the effects of prenatal stress alone or in combination with fluoxetine (FLX) on hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis

Suppression of Alzheimer's disease-related phenotypes by the heat shock protein 70 inducer, geranylgeranylacetone, in APP/PS1 transgenic mice via the ERK/p38 MAPK signaling pathway.

HSP70 overexpression has a remedying effect in neurodegenerative diseases. In Alzheimer's disease (AD), the suppressive effects of HSP70 overexpression on AD-related phenotypes and the underlying mechanisms are unknown. In the current study, the effect of geranylgeranylacetone (GGA), a non-toxic inducer of heat shock protein (HSP)-70 expression, on cognitive function and other pathological phenotypes were evaluated in APP/PS1 mice. It was observed that all doses of orally administered GGA (200, 400, and 800 mg/kg/day) improved cognitive deficit (P<0.05) and lowered the levels of amyloid-β (Aβ)

Social anxiety in childhood: the relationship with self and observer rated social skills.

BACKGROUND: Social anxiety of childhood is a common and pervasive problem. Traditional approaches to treating these difficulties have focused on providing afflicted children with social skills training. This approach has met with some, but not complete success. Recent reconceptualisations of social anxiety in the adult literature have emphasised the role of negative cognition regarding one's own social skills. Experimental evidence has demonstrated that a misperception of social skills, rather than a skills deficit per se, may be most pertinent to the understanding of social anxiety. This stud

Engagement in online cognitive testing with the Cogstate brief battery among a multinational cohort of people with focal epilepsy.

OBJECTIVE: The Human Epilepsy Project (HEP) is a large multinational cohort study of people with newly diagnosed and treated focal epilepsy. HEP utilized the Cogstate Brief Battery (CBB) as a self-directed online assessment to examine cognitive outcomes in study participants. The CBB has previously been validated in healthy individuals and people with various brain disorders, but its use in adults participating in HEP has not been assessed. In this study, we describe how the CBB was used in the HEP cohort and assess factors associated with test completion among study participants. METHODS: En

Development of an Annual Mobility Screen for Preclinical Mobility Limitation: Test Selection and Interpretation Guidelines.

BACKGROUND: Preclinical mobility limitation (PCML) is an emerging public health issue in the United States. A standardized assessment to identify those with PCML has not been established. A Task Force of the American Physical Therapy Association's Academy of Geriatric Physical Therapy (APTA Geriatrics) developed an evidence-based protocol for an Annual Mobility Screen (AMS) with the potential to meet this gap in practice. Early identification of PCML increases the potential for remediation, improved function, and a slower rate of decline. Because mobility is key for independence and quality of
