Evaluation of the South Korean national long-term care insurance-funded cognitive function training programme for older people with mild dementia.

OBJECTIVES: despite the extensive literature on the effectiveness of cognitive training, its effectiveness has not been demonstrated within a population-based long-term care system. To provide cognitive training services to older people with mild dementia, Korea introduced a special dementia rating, as a long-term care grades, in the national long-term care insurance in July 2014. These services are only offered to those with the special dementia rating. This study evaluated the national long-term care insurance-funded cognitive function training programme for older people with mild dementia. …

Train the brain with music (TBM): brain plasticity and cognitive benefits induced by musical training in elderly people in Germany and Switzerland, a study protocol for an RCT comparing musical instrumental practice to sensitization to music.

BACKGROUND: Recent data suggest that musical practice prevents age-related cognitive decline. But experimental evidence remains sparse and no concise information on the neurophysiological bases exists, although cognitive decline represents a major impediment to healthy aging. A challenge in the field of aging is developing training regimens that stimulate neuroplasticity and delay or reverse symptoms of cognitive and cerebral decline. To be successful, these regimens should be easily integrated in daily life and intrinsically motivating. This study combines for the first-time protocolled music

Feasibility and preliminary effects of non-immersive virtual reality motor-cognitive treadmill training in older Veterans: a single-arm pilot study.

BACKGROUND: Daily life involves the successful completion of dual task walking activities and is a dynamic integration of motor and cognitive skills to meet environmental and postural demands to avoid a fall. Older Veterans face greater cognitive decline risk, greater comorbidities, and poorer health than non-veterans and have a higher age-related fall risk. Non-immersive VR motor-cognitive treadmill (VR-TM) training can improve balance, walking, and fall risk in older adults but has not been studied in older Veterans and has been largely studied in neurological populations. This pilot study p

Resistance training protects the hippocampus and precuneus against atrophy and benefits white matter integrity in older adults with mild cognitive impairment.

Mild cognitive impairment (MCI) refers to cognitive alterations with preservation of functionality. Individuals with this diagnosis have a higher risk of developing dementia. Non-pharmacological interventions, such as physical exercise, are beneficial for the cognition of this population. However, the impact of resistance training (RT) on the brain anatomy of older adults with MCI has not yet been clarified. This study aimed to investigate the effects of RT on cognition and brain anatomy in MCI. Forty-four older adults with MCI, 22 in the training group and 22 in the control group, were evalua

Resistance Training Improves Cognitive Function and Depression Without Changing BDNF Levels in People Living with HIV: a Randomized Controlled Clinical Trial.

The increased life expectancy provided by Antiretroviral Therapy(ART) has led to the incidence of different comorbidities in people living with the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV), especially comorbidities related to aging and mental health. Among these, cognitive impairment and depression increased in this population. Therefore, non-pharmacological strategies, such as physical exercise, have been studied to improve these outcomes. This study aimed to investigate the effects of eight weeks of resistance training(RT) on cognitive function and depression status in people with HIV. The sample

Effects of daily L-dopa administration on learning and brain structure in older adults undergoing cognitive training: a randomised clinical trial.

Cognitive aging creates major individual and societal burden, motivating search for treatment and preventive care strategies. Behavioural interventions can improve cognitive performance in older age, but effects are small. Basic research has implicated dopaminergic signalling in plasticity. We investigated whether supplementation with the dopamine-precursor L-dopa improves effects of cognitive training on performance. Sixty-three participants for this randomised, parallel-group, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial were recruited via newspaper advertisements. Inclusion criteria were: age of …
