A life course approach to total tooth loss: Testing the sensitive period, accumulation, and social mobility models in the Health and Retirement Study.

OBJECTIVES: Childhood socio-economic status (SES) has long been associated with later-life oral health, suggesting that childhood is a sensitive period for oral health. Far less attention has been given to the long-term impact of childhood trauma, abuse, and smoking on later-life oral health. This study fills the gap in the literature by examining how adverse childhood experiences-social, psychological, and behavioral-shape total tooth loss over the life course, with an assessment of the sensitive period, accumulation, and social mobility models from life course research. METHODS: Data are dr

Root surface caries among older Australians.

OBJECTIVES: Root caries has increased as a clinical problem in recent decades. However, the use of multiple waves of longitudinal follow-up data in estimating root caries increment has not been previously attempted. The aims of this study were to quantify root caries increment from a longitudinal study of older adults with 4 oral examinations over 11 years and to examine behavioural factors associated with root caries. METHODS: A secondary analysis was undertaken using data collected in 4 waves (baseline, 2-year, 5-year and 11-year) of the South Australian Dental Longitudinal Study which bega

High prevalence of toothache among Great East Japan Earthquake survivors living in temporary housing.

OBJECTIVES: The Great East Japan Earthquake and subsequent tsunami cause large-scale destruction in the north-eastern coastal areas in Japan, and forced many survivors to relocate to prefabricated temporary housing, a typical emergency accommodation. Based on the hypothesis that higher toothache prevalence among the disaster survivors is associated with postdisaster distress, we determined the impact of temporary residential environment as potential stressor on the subjective toothache prevalence. METHODS: A repeated cross-sectional health survey based on self-reported questionnaire was condu

The experience of adverse childhood experiences and dental care in childhood.

OBJECTIVES: Routine preventive dental care is important to overall child health and well-being. However, the experience of adversity in childhood may prevent children from getting adequate preventive care. This study seeks to explore how the prevalence of adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and the role of a protective adult may be associated with dental care utilization in childhood. METHODS: Data from the 2016 South Carolina Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (SC BRFSS), which interviews adults eighteen year of age and older, were used in this study. Dental care utilization in chil

The association of subjective orthodontic treatment need with oral health-related quality of life.

OBJECTIVES: The existing body of evidence reports an inconsistent association between subjective and objective orthodontic treatment need. The concept of oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) might help to explain the differences in subjective and objective orthodontic treatment need. Our aim was to investigate the association of subjective orthodontic treatment with OHRQoL in children. METHODS: This cross-sectional study was embedded in the Generation R Study, a population-based prospective cohort study. OHRQoL and subjective orthodontic treatment need were assessed by parental questi

Socioeconomic position during life and periodontitis in adulthood: a systematic review.

Socioeconomic position (SEP) is a well-known risk indicator for chronic periodontitis. However, it is still unclear how SEP during the life course influences periodontal outcomes in adulthood. This study aimed to systematically review longitudinal studies investigating the influence of individual-level SEP during the life course on subsequent periodontitis in adulthood. Inclusion criteria were epidemiological longitudinal observational studies, in which indicators of relative SEP were assessed prior to clinical assessment of periodontitis. Six electronic databases (PubMed, EMBASE, Web of Scien

A population survey of early factors associated with permanent tooth emergence: findings from a prospective cohort study.

OBJECTIVES: Studies investigating influencing factors of permanent tooth eruption/emergence have primarily focused on anthropometric measurements while less attention has been paid to the effect of perinatal factors. We aimed to explore early factors associated with eruption status of permanent teeth among 12-year-olds through a population-representative prospective cohort. METHODS: A community sample of Hong Kong children born in 1997 was obtained by random sampling from local secondary schools. Participants' background information including birth characteristics, prenatal and early childhoo
