Social and behavior change approaches have shown promise for addressing the demand- and supply-side challenges in postabortion care. As implementers seek to improve the quality of postabortion care, systematically integrating long-standing models and emerging approaches, including behavioral economics, human-centered design, and attribute-based models of behavior change, can promote positive health outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Hypersensitivity reactions (HSRs) are immunologic responses to drugs. Identification of HSRs documented in the electronic health record (EHR) is important for patient safety.
OBJECTIVE: To examine HSR epidemiology using longitudinal EHR data from a large United States health care system.
METHODS: Patient demographic information and drug allergy data were obtained from the Partners Enterprise-wide Allergy Repository for 2 large tertiary care hospitals from 2000 to 2013. Drug-induced HSRs were categorized into immediate and delayed HSRs based on typical phenotypes. Causative drugs

UNLABELLED: Although women with vulvodynia typically have increased vulvar sensitivity, data on characteristics associated with the degree of vulvar sensitivity are lacking. We measured vulvar sensitivity using cotton swab test and vulvodolorimeter among a subset of 335 women, aged younger than 70 years, in the longitudinal Woman to Woman Health Study. Comparing the vulvodynia screening results from their online/paper survey to that at the time of the examination, 42 women had ongoing vulvodynia, 66 had a recent remission, 22 control participants had a recent onset of vulvodynia, and 205 contr

This research focused on the relationships between a national team and five project sites across Canada in planning a complex, community intervention for homeless people with mental illness called At Home/Chez Soi, which is based on the Housing First model. The research addressed two questions: (a) what are the challenges in planning? and (b) what factors that helped or hindered moving project planning forward? Using qualitative methods, 149 national, provincial, and local stakeholders participated in key informant or focus group interviews. We found that planning entails not only intervention

The objective of this study was to examine experiences and service delivery of private medical doctors participating in a professional network designed to improve knowledge and service quality of medical abortion (MA) procedures. A cross-sectional assessment of 87 Medical Abortion Provider Network (MAPnet) participants was conducted between December 2006 and January 2007 to describe participants' service delivery and network experiences. After participating in MAPnet, providers reported a statistically significant amount of more MA services (92%), national protocol adherence for timing of drug

In Uganda, human onchocerciasis is controlled by annual, mass, community-directed, ivermectin-treatment programmes (CDITP) in all endemic communities where the prevalence of the disease is > or = 30%. This is a practical, long-term and cost-effective strategy. In some communities, this system succeeds in providing treatment at the desired level of coverage (i.e. 90% of the annual treatment objective, which is itself equivalent to all those individuals eligible to take ivermectin). Other communities, however, fail to reach this target. The aim of the present study was to determine the factors t

BACKGROUND: Differences in physical activity levels partly reflect structural inequalities in access to health opportunities. According to the socio-ecological model theory, physical activity is influenced by multiple factors across individual characteristics, interpersonal relationships, community environments, and policy systems. Among these, the spatial distribution of fitness facilities, as a key component of urban planning, potential to reshape the allocation of community level and thus offers a novel pathway to alleviate health inequities. In recent years, the Chinese government has acti

BACKGROUND: The aim of this paper is to provide a system-level snapshot of the operational status of mental health, substance use, and problem gambling services 2 years into the pandemic in Ontario, Canada, with a specific focus on services that target individuals experiencing vulnerable circumstances (e.g., homelessness and legal issues).
METHODS: We examined data from 6038 publicly funded community services that provide mental health, substance use, and problem gambling services in Ontario. We used descriptive statistics to describe counts and percentages by service type and specialisation

BACKGROUND: Globally, women with disabilities are less likely to have access to family planning services compared to their peers without disabilities. However, evidence of effective interventions for promoting their sexual and reproductive health and rights remains limited, particularly in low- and middle-income settings. To help address disparities, an inclusive sexual and reproductive health project was developed to increase access to modern contraceptive methods and reduce unmet need for family planning for women of reproductive age with disabilities in Kaduna city, Nigeria. The project use

BACKGROUND: The Housing Collaborative project at Eastern Virginia Medical School has developed a method of adapting public health guidance from public housing communities, which face tremendous health challenges in cardiometabolic health, cancer, and other major health conditions. In this paper, we describe how academic and community partners in the Housing Collaborative came together to do this work with a focus on COVID-19 testing in the context of the emerging pandemic.
METHODS: The academic team used virtual community engagement methods to interact with the Housing Collaborative Community

Recent advances in geolocated data enable quantitative analysis of human mobility, critical for urban planning and epidemic control. This study examines mobility dynamics in Seoul during the COVID-19 pandemic, where minimal lockdown measures allowed relatively natural movement patterns, offering insights for managing viral spread with reduced socioeconomic disruption. We analyzed the Seoul “Living Mobility” dataset (January 2020–December 2022), which contains monthly origin-to-destination flows among 424 sub-districts (“dong”) in 25 districts (“gu”). We constructed a directed and weighted mobi

INTRODUCTION: Opioid-involved overdose deaths continue to surge in many communities, despite numerous evidence-based practices (EBPs) that exist to prevent them. The HEALing Communities Study (HCS) was launched to develop and test an intervention (ie, Communities That HEAL (CTH)) that supports communities in expanding uptake of EBPs to reduce opioid-involved overdose deaths. This paper describes a protocol for a process foundational to the CTH intervention through which community coalitions select strategies to implement EBPs locally.
METHODS AND ANALYSIS: The CTH is being implemented in 67 c

BACKGROUND: Cooking is an identified dietary strategy that is positively associated with optimal diet quality. Prior to initiating cooking interventions, evaluating the prospective acceptability of the intervention among community members living within low food access areas and understanding geospatial food shopping locations may aid in designing community-tailored interventions.
METHODS: A sequential mixed methods study was conducted to determine the prospective acceptability of a planned community-located cooking intervention among African American adults living in a low food access area an

BACKGROUND: Advance care planning has been advocated as a way for people to have their wishes recorded and respected in relation to types of treatment and place of care. However, uptake in England remains low.
AIMS: To examine the views of older, well, adults towards Advance Care Plans (ACPs) and planning for end-of-life care, in order to inform national policy decisions.
METHODS: A mixed methods approach was adopted, involving individual and mini-group qualitative interviews (n = 76, ages 45-85), followed by a quantitative survey (n = 2294, age 55+). The quantitative sample was based on quo

BackgroundCommunity-based palliative care is increasingly promoted as an alternative to hospital-centered end-of-life care, yet prior reviews have largely cataloged outcome measures or program components associated with favorable results, without explaining how these components interact to produce those outcomes.ObjectiveTo synthesize evidence on the effectiveness of community-based palliative care for life-limiting illness and to identify the mechanisms, rather than merely components, underlying its benefits.MethodsFollowing standard systematic review reporting guidelines, we searched multipl

The COVID-19 pandemic and resultant lockdowns have brought unprecedented challenges for Maternal, Sexual and Reproductive Health (MSRH) services. Components of MSRH services adversely affected include antenatal, postnatal, and newborn care; provision of family planning and post-abortion care services; sexual and gender-based violence care and prevention; and care and treatment for sexually transmitted infections including HIV. Resuscitating, remodeling or inventing interventions to restore or maintain these essential services at the community level, as a gateway to higher care, is critical to
