Working Conditions, Occupational Injuries, and Health Among Filipino Fish Processing Workers in Dutch Harbor, Alaska.

This study explored how unique environmental conditions in Alaska influenced occupational health and safety for Filipino fish processing workers, many of whom migrated from warm locations (e.g., the Philippines, California, and Nevada). In-depth interviews were conducted with 26 Filipino workers in one commercial fish processing company in Dutch Harbor. Results indicated that cold weather interferes with workers' job performance, increasing their risk for injury and illness, whereas the community's isolation and rural nature causes loneliness and boredom, resulting in more high-risk behaviors.

We searched Pub Med on 19 March 2019 using terms 'Sex Work' And 'HIV infections'. Our search was limited to articles published since 2017. Scratching the surface: mental health training for rural health workers.

This paper will describe the Mental Health Training for Rural Health Workers Project that was completed in 1995 under the Rural Health Support Education and Training Program. The lack of specialist mental health services in rural areas means that generalist health workers need to provide mental health services in rural communities. Generalist health workers often feel ill-equipped to help people who require mental health services. The aim of this project was to provide generalist workers in rural areas with practical skills and knowledge in order to help people with mental health disorders and

The effect of a health communication campaign on compliance with mass drug administration for schistosomiasis control in western Kenya--the SCORE project.

Compliance with mass drug administration (MDA) can be affected by rumors and mistrust about the drug. Communication campaigns are an effective way to influence attitudes and health behaviors in diverse public health contexts, but there is very little documentation about experiences using health communications in schistosomiasis control programs. A qualitative study was conducted with community health workers (CHWs) as informants to explore the effect of a health communication campaign on their experiences during subsequent praziquantel MDA for schistosomiasis. Discussions were audio-recorded, …

Understanding the role of female sterilisation in Indian family planning through qualitative analysis: perspectives from above and below.

Since the 1990s, the global approach to family planning has undergone fundamental transformations from population control to addressing reproductive health and rights. The Indian family planning programme has also transitioned from being vertical, target-oriented, and clinic-based to a supposedly target-free, choice-based programme that champions reproductive rights. Despite contraceptive choices being offered and voluntary adoption encouraged, there is a heavy reliance on female sterilisation. Community health workers, known as ASHAs, are responsible for on-ground implementation of family pla…

Recognition of pneumonia by primary health care workers in Swaziland with a simple clinical algorithm.

In developing countries primary health care workers are being trained to manage and treat acute respiratory infections with a protocol developed by the WHO. We tested the ability of nurses and nursing assistants in Swaziland to recognise the signs and symptoms of pneumonia; with the results of a paediatrician's examination as "gold standard", sensitivities and specificities were calculated. Danger signs of stridor and abnormal sleepiness were poorly recognised (sensitivity 0-50%) by the health care workers, as was audible wheeze. Severe undernutrition, tachypnoea, and chest wall indrawing were

Reaching out: a community initiative for disadvantaged pregnant women.

A major challenge for public health services is to reach disadvantaged pregnant women with a relevant program that assists them to reduce modifiable risk factors. A community development approach was used to initiate an outreach program aimed at urban natives and other high-risk pregnant women. Community involvement in program planning, the use of native and non-native community health workers, the provision of social support and the tangible health benefits of the program contributed to its success in attracting women for service.

Testing a simplified tool and training package to improve integrated Community Case Management in Tanganyika Province, Democratic Republic of Congo: a quasi-experimental study.

BACKGROUND: Integrated community case management (iCCM) is a strategy to train community health workers (relais communautaires or RECOs in French) in low-resource settings to provide treatment for uncomplicated malaria, pneumonia, and diarrhea for children 2-59 months of age. The package of Ministry of Public Health tools for RECOs in the Democratic Republic of Congo that was being used in 2013 included seven data collection tools and job aids which were redundant and difficult to use. As part of the WHO-supported iCCM program, the International Rescue Committee developed and evaluated a simpl…

Characteristics of patients who are violent to staff and towards other people from a community mental health service in South East England.
