Primary Care Physician Perspectives on Artificial Intelligence for Dementia Screening: A Qualitative Study.

BACKGROUND: Automated approaches to cognitive impairment screening may soon achieve sufficient levels of accuracy for clinical implementation but they present potentially serious ethical challenges. Overcoming such challenges for successful implementation of automated screening may depend on the perspective of the clinicians who are its intended users. METHODS: We conducted a qualitative study of internal medicine, geriatrics and family medicine physicians recruited from ambulatory practices in New York City, NY to identify ethical challenges of implementing automated CI screening (n = 22). Real-world survey of eating attitudes and spending behaviors related to healthy foods/supplements in women seeking to become pregnant.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Since 2022, fertility treatments have been partially covered by insurance in Japan. Women who wish to become pregnant may explore various means of conception as fertility treatments have shown low success rates. Therefore, we aimed to clarify the state of knowledge, behavior, and attitudes toward health foods among women who are actively trying to become pregnant. METHODS: A web-based research company surveyed the eating attitudes and behaviors towards healthy foods of 900 women seeking to become pregnant. Regression analysis for the total amount spent on pregnancy was cond

Updating the nationwide methodology for hearing screening of newborns in the Czech Republic.

Screening programs examining neonatal hearing serve to detect hearing defects, as a prerequisite for hearing rehabilitation, communication skills, and the enhancement of speech development. There are two methods through which neonatal hearing screening is carried out - the transiently evoked otoacoustic emissions (TEOAE) or the automatic BERA (AABR, automated auditory brainstem response). Positive screening means the discovery of a hearing defect (permanent hearing loss), and negative screening (normal TEOAE or the AABR results) means the absence of a hearing defect. The procedural aim is to u

Access to surgery and high-quality radiotherapy for human papillomavirus related oropharynx cancer.

PURPOSE: De-escalation trials in human papillomavirus-associated oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (HPV + OPSCC) have led to variable institutional treatment algorithms. It is unclear whether treatment options are offered equally throughout the United States. This study assesses how social determinants of health (SDOH), and treatment facility type impact access to surgery and/or high-quality radiotherapy (RT) for HPV + OPSCC. RESULTS: Among 6,458 patients, the median age was 62, 93.1 % were White, and 79.2 % had no significant comorbidities. Patients with the highest education, income, an

Association of periodontal disease with migraine: A large-scale community-based cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Periodontal disease may drive a systemic inflammatory response that triggers migraine; however, the association between periodontal disease and migraine has rarely been investigated in a community-based setting. METHODS: This cross-sectional study included 66,109 participants aged 30 to 70 years from Taiwan Biobank (TWB). A structured questionnaire was administered to participants, who were also subjected to whole-genome single nucleotide polymorphism genotyping using the customized Axiom-TWB array. To identify subjects with periodontal disease and migraine, the computerized linka

Developing a community-based multidisciplinary service exit typology for young adults with serious mental health conditions.

Objective: Increasingly, community mental health providers are implementing multidisciplinary treatment models blending child and adult evidence-based practices to boost young adult engagement. Although promising, limited research examines how and why young adults disengage from these new models. This study examines provider documentation of treatment discharges to create a more developmentally-attuned young adult service exit typology. Method: Service records of 18-25 year-olds (n = 124) who discharged from a young adult-tailored multidisciplinary treatment team over a 5-year period were anal

Emergency department usage by uninsured patients in Galveston County, Texas.

The number of uninsured Texas residents who rely on the medical emergency department as their primary health care provider continues to increase. Unfortunately, little information about the characteristics of this group of emergency department users is available. Using an administrative billing database, we conducted a descriptive study to examine the demographic and clinical features of 17,110 consecutive patients without medical insurance who presented to the emergency department of the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston over a 12-month period. We also analyzed the risk of multi

Differences in Admission Rates of Children with Pneumonia Between Pediatric and Community Emergency Departments.

INTRODUCTION: Pneumonia is the most common cause of pediatric death worldwide. We sought to determine whether the rate of hospital admission of pediatric patients diagnosed with pneumonia at a dedicated pediatric-emergency department (PED) is different than the rate at a community emergency department (CED). This comparison may provide insight into decision-making and factors associated with admission. METHODS: In this retrospective cohort study we reviewed patient records from January 1, 2017-December 31, 2019 for pediatric patients diagnosed with pneumonia. We excluded patients who were not

HIV prevention service disruption among transgender adults in the context of 2025 federal executive orders in the United States: a cross-sectional multi-state study.

BACKGROUND: In early 2025, the United States (U.S.) federal government issued several executive orders restricting healthcare access and non-discrimination protections for transgender and nonbinary (trans) populations. The current study investigated correlates of HIV prevention service disruptions among trans adults across five U.S. states. METHODS: We analysed cross-sectional survey data of trans adults (Feb-April 2025) from the Priority Assessment in Trans Health Across States (PATHS2). This multi-state survey was conducted in five varying policy environments (Connecticut, Georgia, New York

Anti-hypertensive medication adherence, socioeconomic status, and cognitive aging in the Chinese community-dwelling middle-aged and older adults ≥ 45 years: a population-based longitudinal study.

BACKGROUND: It remains unclear whether anti-hypertensive medication use is associated with cognitive aging in general Chinese middle-aged and older adults, as well as the interplay with socioeconomic status (SES). We aim to examine associations of anti-hypertensive medication adherence, SES, and cognitive aging in Chinese middle-aged and older adults. METHODS: Our study was based on the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study, an ongoing longitudinal national survey recruiting community-dwelling adults aged ≥ 45 years. Baseline anti-hypertensive medication use was assessed at wave 1. L

Buprenorphine dosing patterns and treatment outcomes for patients with opioid use disorder insured by Medicaid in Philadelphia.

INTRODUCTION: Opioid use disorder (OUD) remains a significant public health challenge, exacerbated by the rise of potent, synthetic opioids like fentanyl in the illicit drug supply. Buprenorphine, a partial opioid agonist, is an evidence-based treatment for OUD. While evidence suggests that higher buprenorphine doses (>16 mg/day) improve treatment retention and reduce overdose, many providers hesitate to prescribe these doses. METHODS: This study analyzed buprenorphine dosing patterns and treatment outcomes among Medicaid-insured individuals with OUD in Philadelphia from 2017 to 2023. Data we

Periodontal disease immunology: 'double indemnity' in protecting the host.

During the last two to three decades our understanding of the immunobiology of periodontal disease has increased exponentially, both with respect to the microbial agents triggering the disease process and the molecular mechanisms of the host engagement maintaining homeostasis or leading to collateral tissue damage. These foundational scientific findings have laid the groundwork for translating cell phenotype, receptor engagement, intracellular signaling pathways and effector functions into a 'picture' of the periodontium as the host responds to the 'danger signals' of the microbial ecology to

Leveraging Multimedia Patient Engagement to Address Minority Cerebrovascular Health Needs: Prospective Observational Study.

BACKGROUND: Social inequities affecting minority populations after Hurricane Katrina led to an expansion of environmental justice literature. In August 2017, Hurricane Harvey rainfall was estimated as a 3000- to 20,000-year flood event, further affecting minority populations with disproportionate stroke prevalence. The Stomp Out Stroke initiative leveraged multimedia engagement, creating a patient-centered cerebrovascular health intervention. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to address social inequities in cerebrovascular health through the identification of race- or ethnicity-specific health needs

Derivation and validation of a clinical diagnostic tool for the identification of older community-dwellers with hypovitaminosis D.

OBJECTIVES: Hypovitaminosis D is highly prevalent among seniors. Although evidence is insufficient to recommend routine vitamin D screening in seniors, universal vitamin D supplementation is not desirable either. To rationalize vitamin D determination, our objective was to elaborate and test a clinical diagnostic tool for the identification of seniors with hypovitaminosis D without using a blood test. DESIGN: Derivation of a clinical diagnostic tool using artificial neural networks (multilayer perceptron; MLP) in randomized training subgroup of Prévention des Chutes, Réseau 4' cohort, and val

Mobile health applications for parents of children with Hirschsprung disease: a requirement analysis.

UNLABELLED: Hirschsprung disease (HD) is a congenital gastrointestinal disorder that occurs due to the absence of nerve cells in segments of the large intestine, resulting in impaired propulsive bowel movements. Postoperative complications and the need for continuous care place parents of affected children under significant educational challenges. Mobile health (mHealth) applications can serve as effective tools to enhance parental education and self-management. The aim of this study was to identify the requirements and functional needs of a mHealth application specifically designed for parent

"It Wasn't Like I Was Trying to Run to Weed Right Away, I Wanted Other Options": A Qualitative Study of Prenatal Healthcare Experiences Among Latina Birthing People Using Cannabis in California.

OBJECTIVE: Cannabis is the most commonly used illicit substance during pregnancy. Negative health and social outcomes associated with cannabis use disproportionately affect birthing people of color, particularly Latinas. Latina birthing people face compounding barriers to prenatal care, including discrimination, immigration-related fears, and distrust of healthcare systems rooted in histories of obstetric racism. This study examines the perspectives and experiences of Latina birthing people in California as they navigate prenatal care while using cannabis. METHOD: We conducted qualitative, se

Transgender Men and Transmasculine One-on-One and Group-Delivered Empowerment for Targeted HIV Reduction (TOGETHR) Study: Protocol for a Digital Factorial Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: In the United States, transgender men and transmasculine people who have sex with men (TMSM) face an increased risk of HIV and encounter unique barriers to HIV prevention services, including preexposure prophylaxis (PrEP). Peer-based, digitally delivered support interventions that address these barriers in 1-on-1 or small-group settings may be effective in increasing PrEP engagement. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to compare the efficacy of digitally delivered individual and small-group peer-based strategies for improving PrEP uptake and adherence among at-risk adult TMSM without HIV.

Utilization of rehabilitation services among older persons with physical disabilities: an analysis of its association with socioeconomic status stratified by gender and age in China.

BACKGROUND: Rehabilitation is a critical method for preventing and controlling disabilities. However, the majority of the global demand for rehabilitation services remains unmet, particularly in low- and middle-income countries. This study aims to explore the complex and concealed stratified relationships between socioeconomic status and the utilization of rehabilitation services among older persons with physical disabilities (PD) from gender and age perspectives. METHODS: A total of 19,782 observations of older persons with PD were included from the 2007–2013 China National Disabled Persons C

Patient Factors Associated with Interest in Teledermatology: Cross-sectional Survey.

BACKGROUND: Teledermatology is a conduit for patients communicating with dermatologists on the internet, which bypasses in-person visits. It holds promise to address access needs for dermatologic care; however, the interest in using teledermatology is unknown in underserved populations with potential barriers to the use of health care technology. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to characterize the association between demographic characteristics with interest in exchanging digital images or videos of skin lesions with health care providers electronically. METHODS: We examined data from the Health
