Screening tests (IHA, LA and ELISA) and confirmatory tests (CF, CCEP and IEOP) on blood samples from 443 patients referred to the Scottish Hydatid Reference Laboratory are reviewed. The ELISA test was the most sensitive. All of 9 confirmed cases of hydatid disease were positive by ELISA. Positive ELISA results were obtained in 10/158 (6.3%) of patients with a suspected cyst(s) and 12/149 (8.1%) patients with a clinical illness suggestive of Hydatid disease. This compared with 6/136 (4.4%) asymptomatic individuals residing in an endemic area, and 1/138 (0.7%) residing in a non-endemic area. The

Levels of neutralizing antibody to lymphocytic choriomeningitis (LCM) virus in the sera of 66 infected persons were assayed by a rapid fluorescent focus-inhibition test (RFFIT). The sera of three different patients from Togo, Africa were investigated with respect to their complement profile. The three patients were suffering from parasitic (Onchocerca volvulus) and bacteriological (Treponema pertenue) diseases. In order to examine the presence of intercellular substance antibodies (ICS Ab) which will fix complement in vitro, in the sera of patients with Brazilian pemphigus foliaceus (BPF), 7 BPF sera were tested using immunofluorescence (IF) and complement IF (CIF). An outbreak of Yellow Fever in South Eastern State involving Uyo, Itu and Abak divisions is presented. The occurrence of few jaundiced cases with fever in places 29-35 km outside Uyo indicated that the epidemic was more widely spread than it was thought. The rural communities appeared to be more severely affected where a considerably large number of unrecorded deaths were reported. Mortality rate was about 56% among hospitalised patients. The diagnosis of Yellow Fever was confirmed by virus isolation and serology This was the first recorded outbreak in this area.
