Preferences for Long-Acting Pre-exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP), Daily Oral PrEP, or Condoms for HIV Prevention Among U.S. Men Who Have Sex with Men.

HIV prevention method preferences were evaluated among 512 U.S. men who have sex with men (MSM; median age: 22 years). Approximately 90 % consistently preferred one option across pairwise comparisons of condoms, daily oral pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP), and long-acting PrEP delivered via either an injectable or one of two types of PrEP implants differing in visibility. Condoms were most frequently preferred (33.8 %), followed by non-visible implants (21.5 %), and oral PrEP (17.0 %); HIV risk was reported by more choosing implants. In a follow-up question comparing the four PrEP options only,…

"If condoms really aren't an option, then I would maybe push more for considering PrEP": A qualitative exploration of Women's Health Providers' PrEP prescribing practices.

Cisgender women account for approximately 20% of new HIV diagnoses in the U.S., yet of those indicated for pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) u … frequently report their PrEP recommendations rely on the patient's overall risk and ability to use condoms. Clinicians' decision-making processes often follow a linear pathway through (1) the assessment of HIV risk, (2) STI testing, (3) condom counseling, and (4) PrEP counseling and provision. Despite medical guidelines recommending PrEP to all sexually …

Condoms, Lubricants and Rectal Cleansing: Practices Associated with Heterosexual Penile-Anal Intercourse Amongst Participants in an HIV Prevention Trial in South Africa, Uganda and Zimbabwe.

We investigated condom and lubricant use, rectal cleansing and rectal gel use for penile-anal intercourse (PAI), during in-depth interviews with women from South Africa, Uganda and Zimbabwe who formerly participated in VOICE, a five-arm HIV prevention trial of two antiretroviral tablets and a vaginal gel. Few studies have addressed practices related to PAI among women; existing data from Africa on condom and lubricant use for PAI, as well as preparatory practices of PAI such as rectal cleansing, are limited to men who have sex with men. Women demonstrated a lack of awareness of HIV transmissio

A Rare Complication of an Inflatable Penile Prosthesis: Penile Skin Necrosis Due to Inappropriate Use of the Condom Catheter.

Penile prosthesis implantation is considered a last-resort treatment for erectile dysfunction, used when pharmacological and other conservative treatments are inadequate or at the patient's request. The well-documented complications of penile prostheses include pain, infection, mechanical failure, improper positioning, and erosion. In this case, we report a patient presenting with penile skin necrosis, despite the absence of typical risk factors such as diabetes mellitus, atherosclerosis, or chronic renal failure, attributed to pressure from a condom catheter that was used 15 years after the i

The Condom Use Self-Efficacy Scale in Substance Use Disorder Treatment-Seeking American Indian Adults.

American Indians (AIs) experience substance use disorder and sexual risk related inequities with elevated rates of sexually transmitted infections, unintended pregnancy, and fetal alcohol spectrum disorders. Substance misuse is associated with risky sexual behaviors including condomless sex. Objectives: The current study aimed to test the validity of the Condom Use Self-Efficacy Scale (CUSES) and the relationship between self-efficacy and condom use behaviors in AI individuals with substance use disorders (SUDs). Exploratory analyses also examined changes in condom use self-efficacy across SUD

Life-saving with a vaginal condom catheter in postpartum haemorrhage due to vaginal lacerations in a low-resource setting.

Postpartum haemorrhage (PPH) due to multiple vaginal lacerations is difficult to manage and tamponade is used as a life-saving measure. Condom catheter with stay sutures at the vaginal introitus for this purpose has not been reported. We describe successfully managing PPH due to multiple vaginal lacerations following a forceps delivery using a condom tied to an 18 FG Foley catheter. The device was introduced to the vagina, inflated with 700 mL of normal saline and was held in situ by sealing the vaginal introitus with interrupted nylon stitches running between the labia minora. Condom catheter

Diverging trends in US male-female condom use by STI risk factors: a nationally representative study.

OBJECTIVE: Condom use behaviours are proximal to recent STI increases in the USA, yet it remains unclear whether the use of condoms has changed over time among unmarried, non-cohabiting young men who have sex with women (MSW) and how this variability is influenced by STI risk factors. METHODS: To examine condom use over time among MSW aged 15-29, we used three cross-sectional surveys from the 2002, 2006-2010 and 2011-2017 National Survey of Family Growth. We estimated weighted percentages, adjusted prevalence ratios (APRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) to assess changes in condom use, str…

Preventing syphilis in the 16th century: the distinguished Italian anatomist Gabriele Falloppio (1523-1562) and the invention of the condom.

By the end of the 15th century, syphilis had reached epidemic proportions in Europe. Unable to ascertain its causes, physicians resorted to superstition. At the beginning of the 16th century, the sexual transmission of the disease was established. Initially, the principal measure of infection control was sexual abstinence and mutual fidelity. However, during the same period the Italian anatomist Gabriele Falloppio (1523-1562) proposed a method of preventing syphilis transmission: the medication-soaked linen sheath. Thus was born the idea of a mechanical barrier against sexually transmitted dis
