Leukotrienes (LTs) are lipid mediators that play pivotal roles in acute and chronic inflammation and allergic diseases. They exert their biological effects by binding to specific G-protein-coupled receptors. Each LT receptor subtype exhibits unique functions and expression patterns. The problem of osteoarthritis (OA) in patients with atopy (bronchial asthma, atopic dermatitis, allergic rhinitis, allergic conjunctivitis) discussed. In patients with atopy, the risk of OA is significantly higher (36-58%) than in the general population. Possible mechanisms of OA in atopy are considered. Further research may help decipher the pathogenesis of OA and improve pharmacotherapy.

Allergic ocular diseases are frequently encountered in the ophthalmologic practice. The term covers a wide array of severity, ranging from seasonal allergic conjunctivitis to the sight-threatening variant of atopic keratoconjunctivitis. The pathophysiology of these diseases is complex. Recent studies showed that nerve growth factor and interleukin IV, seem to play a role in these mechanisms.

The side effects of topical dorzolamide hydrochloride, such as conjunctivitis, eyelid edema, and eye lid irritation, are well known. However, allergic contact dermatitis due to dorzolamide is rare, although the product has been commonly used worldwide in patients with glaucoma. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of allergic contact dermatitis caused by topical dorzolamide hydrochloride in Korea. The allergic rhinitis is the most common immune disorder with a lifetime prevalence of 24% and one of the most common chronic diseases at all--with tendency to rise. It occurs in childhood and influences the patients' social life, school performance and labour productivity. Furthermore the allergic rhinitis is accompanied by a lot of comorbidities, including conjunctivitis, asthma bronchiale, food allergy, neurodermatitis and sinusitis. For example the risk for asthma is 3.2-fold higher for adults with allergic rhinitis than for healthy people.

A double masked placebo controlled multicentric randomised clinical trial was conducted in 157 patients suffering from different eye ailments namely, cataract, dry eye syndrome, ocular asthenia, refractive errors and allergic conjunctivitis with a herbal eye drop preparation and placebo. PURPOSE OF REVIEW: To increase the awareness of nonimmunoglobulin E-mediated conjunctival disorders similar to those recognized to affect other organs that are targets in immunoglobulin E-mediated disorders. The humoral immune system of reptiles is not well-studied. To the best of the authors' knowledge, this case report describes the first case of a type I allergic conjunctivitis associated with orchard grass in an African spur-thighed tortoise (Centrochelys sulcata) supported by intradermal allergen testing and provocative testing.
