Dupuytren's disease, although not altogether uncommon, has eluded scientists who have sought to explain the cause of this palmar fibroproliferative disorder. Linear scleroderma is an unusual disorder characterized by linear streaks of fibrotic skin involvement, which can lead to severe limb deformities and contractures. The authors present a case of severe wrist contracture in a child with linear scleroderma treated by release of the contracture with coverage of the exposed carpus with an abductor digiti minimi flap and skin graft. Reports of successful treatment of extremity deformities are rare. At 1 year this correction appears to have been successful.

Today, by means of electron microscopy and histochemistry, several alternations specific of pathology of the disease can be shown, providing a better understanding. The cytogenetics of cell cultures derived from Dupuytren's tissue, adjacent palmar fascia and palmar skin from patients undergoing fasciecto … e flexor retinaculum cultures from carpal tunnel syndrome cases. These findings in both Dupuytren's contracture and carpal tunnel syndrome suggest the presence of chromosomal instability in the palmar fascia. The significance of the chromosomal abnormalities is however unclear, but they indicate a possible common pathway in the onset of pathological fibrosis.
