Hemangioblastoma of the corpus callosum: A case report and review of the literature on its origin.

A third case of corpus callosum hemangioblastoma (HB) is presented. With no preoperative embolization, surgery was uneventful and the postoperative course was excellent. Based on the literature, we attempted to clarify the histogenesis of HB and to explain why they are exceptional in the supratentorial region in contrast to the posterior cranial fossa. The VHL gene is expressed particularly in Purkinje cells of the cerebellum, but this expression is also possible in supratentorial structures. Its mutation leads to developmental arrest of angioblasts that become potentially neoplastic cells. Th…

Electrophysiological and clinical correlates of corpus callosum atrophy in patients with multiple sclerosis.

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is an idiopathic inflammatory demyelinating disorder of the central nervous system (CNS) characterized by demyelination and axonal degeneration. Corpus callosum (CC) is commonly involved during the disease process leading to atrophy (93%). Currently, there are no established markers of disease progression and the interplay of processes leading to brain atrophy in MS remains unknown. The primary aim of this study was to assess the frequency of CC atrophy in MS patients. Furthermore, the relationship between expanded disability status scale (EDSS) and transcranial magneti…

In vivo measurement of axon diameter distribution in the corpus callosum of rat brain.

Here, we present the first in vivo non-invasive measurement of the axon diameter distribution in the rat corpus callosum. Previously, this measurement was only possible using invasive histological methods. The axon diameter, along with other physical properties, such as the intra-axonal resistance, membrane resistance and capacitance etc. helps determine many important functional properties of nerves, such as their conduction velocity. In this work, we provide a novel magnetic resonance imaging method called AxCaliber, which can resolve the distinct signatures of trapped water molecules diffus…

Physical, motor, sensory and developmental features associated with agenesis of the corpus callosum.

BACKGROUND: The study objective was to develop a profile of characteristics and diagnostic indicators of agenesis of the corpus callosum (ACC) using a large sample of individuals with ACC and their siblings. Very few previous studies have been able to access large populations in order to develop a comprehensive profile. METHODS: Caregivers of 720 individuals with ACC and 219 siblings, the largest sample studied to date, provided surveys with data on diagnoses, physical characteristics, developmental patterns and physical functioning. RESULTS: Compared with siblings, individuals with ACC exhi…

Agenesis of the corpus callosum in fetuses with mild ventriculomegaly: role of MR imaging.

PURPOSE: We evaluated the role of magnetic resonance (MR) imaging in the diagnosis of corpus callosum agenesis - isolated or associated with other anomalies - in fetuses with mild cerebral ventriculomegaly, as depicted at prenatal sonography. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Between January 2005 and March 2007, 33 fetuses with a mean gestational age of 28.9 weeks (range 17-37) and mild ventriculomegaly diagnosed at prenatal sonography were included in this prospective study. All fetuses underwent MR imaging according to the following protocol: half-Fourier T2-weighted images along the three orthogonal p…

Large congenital melanocytic nevi presenting with lissencephaly with an absent corpus callosum.

A neonatal case of provisional neurocutaneous melanosis presenting with lissencephaly is reported. Several congenital nevi were observed on the trunk and extremities of the infant, including a giant congenital hairy nevus over the skull. Brain magnetic resonance imaging revealed a marked ventricular dilatation with pachygyria and an absent corpus callosum; however, an injection of gadolinium did not demonstrate any enhanced lesions. Histopathological investigations by a brain biopsy showed a disorganized and anomalous embryonic cerebral architecture, suggesting lissencephaly. The detailed mech…

Selective reduction of Von Economo neuron number in agenesis of the corpus callosum.

Von Economo neurons (VENs) are large spindle-shaped neurons localized to anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) and fronto-insular cortex (FI). VENs appear late in development in humans, are a recent phylogenetic specialization, and are selectively destroyed in frontotemporal dementia, a disease which profoundly disrupts social functioning and self-awareness. Agenesis of the corpus callosum (AgCC) is a congenital disorder that can have significant effects on social and emotional behaviors, including alexithymia, difficulty intuiting the emotional states of others, and deficits in self- and social-awa…

Agenesis of the corpus callosum: an MR imaging analysis of associated abnormalities in the fetus.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Anomalies associated with callosal agenesis (ACC) found postnatally have been well documented. However, to our knowledge, no detailed MR imaging analysis of associated anomalies has been reported in a large cohort of fetuses with ACC. This study will assess those anomalies and compare them with postnatal cohorts of ACC, to identify associated fetal brain abnormalities that may give insight into etiology and outcome. MATERIALS AND METHODS: All cases of ACC diagnosed on fetal MR imaging during an 11-year period were retrospectively reviewed, including fetal MR imaging, p

Agenesis of the corpus callosum in California 1983-2003: a population-based study.

The objective of this study was to characterize the prevalence, demographic risk factors, and malformations associated with agenesis and hypoplasia of the corpus callosum diagnosed in infancy. Using a large population-based registry of birth defects, we ascertained 630 cases of agenesis (ACC) and hypoplasia (HCC) of the corpus callosum diagnosed in the first year of life among 3.4 million live births from 1983 to 2003. Infants with destructive lesions or specific complex central nervous system (CNS) malformations (neural tube defects, lissencephaly, and holoprosencephaly) were excluded. Multiv…

Mega-corpus callosum, polymicrogyria, and psychomotor retardation: confirmation of a syndromic entity.

A mega-corpus callosum (CC) is not a common manifestation of neurological disease. Previous reports of patients with a constellation of findings including megalencephaly, perisylvian polymicrogyria, distinct facies, psychomotor retardation and mega-corpus callosum were designated as having megalencephaly, mega-corpus callosum, and complete lack of motor development [OMIM 603387; also referred to as megalencephaly-polymicrogyria-mega-corpus callosum (MEG-PMG-MegaCC)] syndrome. Three patients were initially reported with this syndrome, and a fourth was reported recently. Another case had similar…

Agenesis of the corpus callosum in Turner's syndrome: report of a case and review of the literature.

Turner's syndrome (TS) is a genetic disorder caused by loss of entire or a substantial part of the X-chromosome, but association with central nervous system (CNS) abnormalities is rarely reported. A 32-year-old female with TS was found to have agenesis of the corpus callosum (ACC) and various clinical features including coarctation of aorta, hypertelorism, small jaw, short and webbed neck, cubitus valgus, and absence of the uterus. Karyotype analysis revealed X monosomy cell line (45, X). There have been only three other cases of TS associated with ACC. High prenatal lethality of TS fetuses wi…

Disruption of reciprocal coordination by a medial frontal stroke sparing the corpus callosum.

Aleksandr Luria described several tests of higher motor function, including the "reciprocal coordination" test of bimanual coordination. Although these tests are commonly used to assess frontal lobe function, their specific neuroanatomic underpinnings are not completely understood. We describe a man with a medial frontal stroke sparing the corpus callosum with a defect in Luria's reciprocal coordination test but otherwise intact motor abilities, including other tests of higher motor function.

A novel locus for hereditary spastic paraplegia with thin corpus callosum and epilepsy.

BACKGROUND: Hereditary spastic paraplegia (HSP) are classified clinically as pure when progressive spasticity occurs in isolation or complicated when other neurologic abnormalities are present. At least 22 genetic loci have been linked to HSP, 8 of which are autosomal recessive (ARHSP). HSP complicated with the presence of thin corpus callosum (HSP-TCC) is a common subtype of HSP. One genetic locus has been identified on chromosome 15q13-q15 (SPG11) for HSP-TCC, but some HSP-TCC families have not been linked to this locus. METHODS: The authors characterized two families clinically and radiolo…

Reduced white matter connectivity in the corpus callosum of children with Tourette syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Brain imaging studies have revealed anatomical anomalies in the brains of individuals with Tourette syndrome (TS). Prefrontal regions have been found to be larger and the corpus callosum (CC) area smaller in children and young adults with TS compared with healthy control subjects, and these anatomical features have been understood to reflect neural plasticity that helps to attenuate the severity of tics. METHOD: CC white matter connectivity, as measured by the Fractional Anisotropy (FA) index from diffusion tensor images, was assessed in 20 clinically well-defined boys with Touret…

Anterograde amnesia associated with infarction of the anterior fornix and genu of the corpus callosum.

Anterograde amnesia due to infarction of the anterior fornix is a rare but unique neuropsychological syndrome. Only 2 cases have been reported previously. Lacking focal neurologic deficits, this syndrome is not easy to diagnose. Moreover, it is not fully recognized by the clinicians, making its diagnosis all the more difficult. Here we report a patient of infarction of the anterior fornix and genu of the corpus callosum who developed sudden apathy and anterograde amnesia. Unfortunately, the patient was initially diagnosed and treated as an acute psychiatric disorder by a psychiatrist, and trea…

The corpus callosum in first episode schizophrenia: a diffusion tensor imaging study.

BACKGROUND: Neuropathological and imaging studies suggest that corpus callosum abnormalities (CC) are present in schizophrenia, but it remains to be determined whether these abnormalities are present at illness onset. Diffusion tensor imaging (DTI), which is more sensitive than conventional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in detecting subtle structural changes in the organisation and integrity of white matter tracts, is an ideal tool to investigate this question. OBJECTIVE: To determine whether CC abnormalities are present at illness onset in schizophrenia. METHODS: Twenty patients (14 men,…
