A total of 250 Corynebacterium diphtheriae isolates from clinical cases and carriers in Russia were assayed by PCR directed at the A subunit of the diphtheria toxin gene to distinguish toxigenic from nontoxigenic strains; 170 strains were positive as indicated by the presence of the 248-bp amplicon. The results of this PCR assay were in complete concordance with those of the standard immunoprecipitation assay (Elek), and the PCR assay is a useful tool for rapid identification in clinical laboratories.

The production of (R)-3-chloro-1,2-propanediol [(R)-MCP] from prochiral 1,3-dichloro-2-propanol (DCP) was examined with a bacterial strain identified as a Corynebacterium strain. Currently, bacterial classification at the species level relies on the 95-96% average nucleotide identity (ANI) value that is known to be equivalent to a 70% digital DNA-DNA hybridization (dDDH) value. Previous studies provided indirect evidence that in Corynebacterium diphtheriae regulation of diphtheria toxin gene (tox) transcription by iron is mediated by a bacterial repressor. The in-vitro activity of LY146032 was studied against Staphylococcus aureus, Listeria monocytogenes, Corynebacterium JK, and Bacillus spp. in comparison with several agents with action against Gram-positive bacteria. LY146032 showed an MIC90 of 0.4 mg/l for S. aureus, regardless of the resistance to penicillin or oxacillin. LY146032 was equivalent in activity to ciprofloxacin and vancomycin against S. aureus and moderately active against other species tested (MIC90, 0.8-3.2 mg/l).

A patient with nonspecific urethritis (NSU) and his consort were examined for infection with NSU corynebacteria, mycoplasmas, and gonococci.
