Determination of 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid and its major transformation product in soil samples by liquid chromatographic analysis.

The 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D) is one of the most applied herbicides around the world to control broad leave herbs in many crops. In this study, a method was developed for simultaneous extraction and determination of 2,4-D and its major transformation product, i.e., the 2,4-dichlorophenol (2,4-DCP), in soil samples. The herbicide and its degradation product were extracted twice from soil samples, after acidification, by dichloromethane on ultrasound system for 1 h. Both extracts were combined and filtrated in qualitative filter paper and Celite((R)). The total extract was concentra

[Accumulation and Pollution Risks of Heavy Metals in Soils and Agricultural Products from a Typical Black Shale Region with High Geological Background].

Soil polluted by heavy metals (HMs) is an important environmental issue in China, and regional geological background is a vital factor that influences the enrichment of HMs in soils. Previous studies have shown that soils derived from black shales are commonly enriched in HMs and present high potential eco-environmental risks. However, few studies have investigated the HMs in different agricultural products, which inhibit the safe use of land and safe production of food crops in black shale regions. This study investigated the concentrations, pollution risks, and speciation of HMs in soils and

Impact of Chamaecrista rotundifolia cover cropping on soil elemental cycling in karst agroecosystems.

Karst desertification causes severe soil erosion, hydrological imbalance, and biodiversity loss, thereby threatening ecosystem resilience and agricultural productivity. Soil carbon (C), nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and sulfur (S) cycling underpin ecosystem stability, yet how agricultural management practices regulate multi-element cycling in degraded karst agroecosystems remains poorly understood. Here, we conducted a four-year field trial in a karst mango orchard in southwestern China and integrated metagenomic sequencing with comprehensive soil environmental profiling to investigate how C.

Risk assessment to humans of mycotoxins in animal-derived food products.

This paper addresses approaches for assessing potential human health hazards from the presence of natural toxicants, such as mycotoxins, in animal food products. At high levels in feed these mycotoxins may cause loss or illness of farm animals, through development of animal toxicoses, such as aflatoxicosis. At lower levels in feed these mycotoxins may have no apparent effect on livestock production, but their residues and related substances may move up the food chain. This indirect intake of mycotoxins and related substances from the consumption of animal food products may pose a health hazard

Poacic Acid, a Plant-Derived Stilbenoid, Augments Cell Wall Chitin Production, but Its Antifungal Activity Is Hindered by This Polysaccharide and by Fungal Essential Metals.

Climate and environmental changes have modified the habitats of fungal pathogens, inflicting devastating effects on livestock and crop production. Additionally, drug-resistant fungi are increasing worldwide, driving the urgent need to identify new molecular scaffolds for the development of antifungal agents for humans, animals, and plants. Poacic acid (PA), a plant-derived stilbenoid, was recently discovered to be a novel molecular scaffold that inhibits the growth of several fungi. Its antifungal activity has been associated with perturbation of the production/assembly of the fungal cell wall…

Instrumentation for plant health and growth in space.

The present-day plant growth facilities ("greenhouses") for space should be equipped with monitors and controllers of ambient parameters within the chamber because spacecraft environmental variations can be unfavorable to plants. Moreover, little is known about the effects of spaceflight on the greenhouse and rooting media. Lack of information about spaceflight effects on plants necessitates supplying space greenhouses with automatic, non-invasive monitors of, e.g., gas exchange rate, water and nutrient ion uptake, plant mass, temperature and water content of leaves. However, introduction of a

Differential response of finger millet accessions to contrasting saline water levels and irrigation regimes under desert conditions.

Water salinity and scarcity constitute major limitations to crop production in arid and semi-arid regions. Introduction of nutritious and stress-tolerant underutilized crops is a promising approach for dietary enrichment, cropping system diversification, remediation of marginal and degraded lands, and building climate resilience. The primary objectives of this study were to investigate the effect of water salinity and managed water-deficit stress on grain and fodder yield, identify multi-trait ideotypes, and validate the stability and genetic gain in finger millet ideotypes over a 2-year perio…

Sterile insect technique reduces cabbage maggot (Diptera: Anthomyiidae) infestation in root crucifers in Canada.

The cabbage maggot (Delia radicum (L.)) is a major pest of brassica vegetables in Canada that has traditionally been managed with soil-applied insecticides. However, recent regulatory restrictions on key products such as chlorpyrifos have created a pressing need for alternative solutions. This study evaluates the sterile insect technique (SIT) as a control method for the cabbage maggot in root crucifers. Large-scale field trials conducted from 2019 to 2022 in Quebec (Canada) demonstrated significant reductions in D. radicum infestations in radish and daikon crops. Quality control measures conf

Chitosan hydrogel microspheres loaded with Bacillus subtilis promote plant growth and reduce chromium uptake.

Cr contamination can lead to reduced crop yields and threaten food security. Eliminating soil Cr contamination or improving crop resistance to Cr is challenging in terms of costly, environment and biodiversity risk. Here, we used chitosan hydrogel microspheres loaded with Bacillus subtilis to cope with plant stress caused by Cr contamination. The addition of chitosan hydrogel microspheres loaded with Bacillus subtilis increased shoot biomass by 88 % and decreased the plant Cr concentration by 17 %. The bacterial chitosan hydrogel microsphere treatment enhanced the decomposition of organic matt

Metabolomics to target insecticidal compounds of Cenostigma pluviosum var. peltophoroides against Spodoptera frugiperda (J. E. Smith) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae).

The fall armyworm Spodoptera frugiperda is the most prevalent plague in crops associated with a reduction in corn production by up to 34%. Pesticides have been used to reduce this plague, but they cause several environmental problems including resistance, ecological imbalance, and toxicity to the final consumer. The use of plant extracts has been an effective manner of eradicating this plague from crop plantations. In this sense, the hexane, EtOAc, and EtOH/H2O fractions from EtOH extract from different parts of Cenostigma pluviosum were investigated against this fall armyworm leading to a per

Proteomic Techniques and Management of Flooding Tolerance in Soybean.

Climate change is considered a major threat to world agriculture and food security. To improve the agricultural productivity and sustainability, the development of high-yielding stress-tolerant, and climate-resilient crops is essential. Of the abiotic stresses, flooding stress is a very serious hazard because it markedly reduces plant growth and grain yield. Proteomic analyses indicate that the effects of flooding stress are not limited to oxygen deprivation but include many other factors. Although many flooding response mechanisms have been reported, flooding tolerance mechanisms have not bee

Greenhouse evaluation and environmental impact assessment of different urine-derived struvite fertilizers as phosphorus sources for plants.

A selection of six urine-derived struvite fertilizers generated by innovative precipitation technologies was assessed for their quality and their effectiveness as phosphorus sources for crops. Struvite purity was influenced by drying techniques and magnesium dosage. In a greenhouse experiment, the urine fertilizers led to biomass yields and phosphorus uptakes comparable to or higher than those induced by a commercial mineral fertilizer. Heavy metal concentrations of the different struvite fertilizers were below the threshold limits specified by the German Fertilizer and Sewage Sludge Regulatio

Pesticide use in agriculture.

During the last three decades, the use of modern organic synthetic pesticides has increased about 40-fold. Total U.S. production, for domestic and expert use, in 1976 was about 1.4 million pounds. Crops receiving the most intensive application of various pesticides were cotton for insecticides, corn for herbicides, and fruits and vegetables for fungicides. Examination of use trends of pesticides indicates that the volume in pounds of herbicides used on crops is increasing, whereas the quantities of insecticides and fungicides remain stable. New chemical classes of compounds such as the synthet
