RATIONALE: Pancreatic cystic neoplasms (PCNs) encompass a wide spectrum of disease from benign to malignant. Mucinous cystic neoplasms (MCNs) are the second most common PCNs, typically occurring as solitary masses in the pancreatic body or tail of middle-aged women. They are characterized by elevated cyst fluid carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) and low amylase due to lack of ductal communication. While MCNs have malignant potential, and lesions >3 cm are higher risk, size alone is not an absolute predictor of malignancy. We present a rare case of an exceptionally large, yet benign, PCN in a 24-ye…

Intracranial epidermoid cysts are uncommon lesions with typical radiological and operative findings. We report a midline cystic lesion in the pre-pontine cistern, with radiological features of an epidermoid, but intra-operatively yielding a thin-walled cyst with fluid contents. The cyst wall showed stratified squamous epithelium on histopathology.

A 60-year-old male, living in a rural area, presented with recurrent upper gastrointestinal bleeding. Isolated fundal varices were seen on endoscopy. A lesion similar to cyst hydatid was seen in the spleen on abdominal ultrasonography and computerized tomography scanning. Also, sinistral (left-sided) portal hypertension and collaterals were seen due to the compression of the splenic vein by the cyst. Indirect hemagglutination antibody test for Echinococcus granulosus was positive. By screening, no other cyst was found in any other site of the body. The patient underwent open abdominal surgery,

The authors present a case report on a 60-year-old female patient suffering from benign mediastinal cyst, arterial hypertension and porphyria. CT-guided transparietal fine-needle punction was done simultaneously as a diagnostic and a therapeutic procedure. Partial regression of the cyst was still apparent at the check CT investigation after six months. The examination of the level of immunoglobulins in the fluid obtained during transparietal punction confirms the diagnosis of bronchogenic cyst.

BACKGROUND: Pituitary adenomas (PAs) are prevalent tumors that often exhibit ischemia, hypoxia, and cystic transformations, impacting their prognosis. The relationship between cystic degeneration in PAs and the expressions of hypoxia-inducible factor-1α (HIF-1α), glucose transporter 1 (GLUT1), and Ki-67 remains unclear. This study aims to analyze the correlation between MRI characteristics of cystic PA and the expression of these proteins.
METHODS: This is a retrospective analysis. A total of 74 patients with cystic PA and 30 PA patients without cystic degeneration were enrolled. Their MRI si

Renal epithelial cysts are caused by hereditary or acquired etiologies of undetermined molecular mechanisms. The cysts develop within renal tubules by pathogenetic processes that involve cellular proliferation, accumulation of tubule fluid within distended cavities, and remodelling of extracellular matrix. Evidence is accumulating to support the view that renal cysts are composed of moderately dedifferentiated, immature epithelial cells that proliferate abnormally and transport solute and fluid by secretion, in contrast to the usual absorptive movement of liquid in normal renal tubules. The fo

A review was conducted of 401 women who presented with breast lumps that proved to be cysts by yielding fluid on aspiration. The aim was to determine the proportion of patients with cancers that masqueraded as cysts and to establish whether short-term follow-up was necessary. After the first visit, six patients had biopsies because of a residual mass or a bloodstained aspirate. Of these patients, two were found to have cancer. After the follow-up visit, 20 further biopsies were carried out for presence of a mass, bloodstained fluid, or recurrent fluid, and two more cancers were diagnosed. Of t

Autosomal-dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD) induces a secretory phenotype, resulting in multiple fluid-filled cysts. We have previously demonstrated that VX-809, a corrector of the cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR), reduces cyst growth. Here, we show that in normal mice CFTR is located within the cells and also at the apical and basolateral membranes. However, in polycystic kidney disease (pkd1)-knockout mice, CFTR was located at the plasma membrane, consistent with its role in cAMP-dependent fluid secretion. In cystic mice, VX-809 treatment increased CFTR lev

A 72-year-old woman presented with an intradiploic arachnoid cyst in the occipital intradiploic space which was found incidentally by magnetic resonance (MR) imaging. Computed tomography revealed a widened diploic space and thinning of the inner and outer tables of the occipital bone. The cyst appeared as isointense to the cerebrospinal fluid on both T1- and T2-weighted images. The differential diagnosis of intradiploic epidermoid cyst could be excluded because the lesion was low intensity on diffusion-weighted MR images. Arachnoid cyst is a benign lesion, so exploratory surgery should be avoi

PURPOSE: To describe the MR appearance of cystic meningiomas, and to correlate the MR appearance with the surgical and neuropathologic findings.
METHODS: Eight patients with cysts associated with meningiomas were studied on a 1.5-T MR system. Unenhanced sagittal T1- and axial T2-weighted images were obtained in all patients. Axial and coronal gadopentetate dimeglumine-enhanced T1-weighted spin-echo images were obtained in seven patients. Additional sagittal T1-weighted spin-echo contrast-enhanced images were obtained in four patients.
RESULTS: The cystic components were intratumoral and ecce

Hydatid cyst (HC) is a parasitic infection caused by Echinococcus granulosus. It occurs frequently in liver and lungs. Hydatid cyst of neck is extremely rare occurrence, and here, we report it with this unusual location. A 25-year-old male nonhypertensive and nondiabetic presented with slowly growing painless swelling in right side of neck for 4-5 years. The swelling measured 5 × 3 cm and was of soft to firm consistency. Fine needle aspiration cytology yielded fluid aspirate and smear showed features suggestive of HC. The intact cyst was removed surgically, and histopathological examination co

Preparations of the two most immunoreactive Echinococcus granulosus antigens (antigens 4 and 5) from sheep hydatid fluid, purified by a simplified method, and monospecific antisera against antigens 4 and 5, prepared by a new procedure, were used to measure the antigenic concentrations of antigens 4 and 5 in swine, sheep, and human hydatid fluids from pulmonary or hepatic cysts. Two bovine samples and two commercial preparations were also tested. The concentration of both antigens was significantly higher in sheep and human hydatid fluids than in swine hydatid fluid. The antigenic content of th

INTRODUCTION: Spinal intradural lipomas are rare entities, particularly when not associated with spinal dysraphism. Their diagnosis is often delayed due to their slow growth and presentation in dorsal components. Although the association between lipomas and cysts has been previously noted, the coexistence of lipomas with fluid-filled cysts is exceedingly rare. We present a case that highlights the presentation, management, and outcomes of a patient with the unusual coexistence of these two lesions in the lumbar region.

Only a few cases of temporal choroidal fissure cyst are reported. We describe a new case of an 8 years old girl who manifested complex partial seizure. The diagnosis was made by magnetic resonance imagining (MRI). The signal intensity of the cyst was identical to the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), and the underlying hippocampus was compressed by the cyst. The seizures were medically controlled. The value of MRI in the diagnosis and medical treatment will be discussed.

Mediastinal parathyroid cyst is a rare cause of space occupying lesion in the mediastinum. No specific symptomatology may be attributed to the non-functioning parathyroid cyst. The diagnosis is rarely made before exploration. The cysts are thin walled, smooth, of varying sizes and contained clear, opalescent or haemorrhagic fluid. Histopathological examination reveals clusters of parathyroid cells dispersed in the wall of the cyst. Surgical removal is the treatment of choice and can be performed with minimal morbidity.

A large solitary bone cyst involving the epiphysis produced 5.0 cm shortening of the proximal humerus in a 15-year-old girl. Biopsy revealed the cyst was filled with thin yellow fluid under pressure and lined by a fibrous membrane. X-rays 9 months after biopsy demonstrated progressive cyst obliteration. A review of literature revealed no similar case. It is postulated that solitary cysts rarely may involve the physeal and epiphyseal structures and thereby retard longitudinal bone growth.

INTRODUCTION: This study investigates the hypothesis that anatomical localization on the cranium dictates the internal composition of pediatric inclusion cysts, statistically mapping how specific scalp positions predispose lesions to distinct contents such as fluid or hair.
METHODS: A retrospective study of 180 pediatric patients who underwent surgical treatment for cranial inclusion cysts was performed. Demographic data, lesion localization, imaging findings, intraoperative characteristics, and histopathological results were analyzed.
RESULTS: Median age at surgery was 13 months (range 2-21

In the treatment of bacterial infections, adequate antibiotic concentrations must be realised at the site of infection. Levels of 3 antibiotics--phenoximethylpenicillin, clindamycin and tinidazole - were measured in serum and fluid of periapical odontogenic cysts in 30 patients undergoing enucleation of periapical cysts. After a single dose of 500 mg tinidazole, the concentration of tinidazole in the cystic fluid was 4.3 micrograms/ml, which was about 1/3 of the concentration in the serum. No measurable levels were achieved in the cystic fluid with phenoximethylpenicillin or clindamycin.
