Hyperbaric oxygen (HBO) therapy has recently emerged as a potential primary option for the management of hemorrhagic cystitis. We review our experience treating hemorrhagic cystitis with HBO. Between January 2001 and May 2007, eight patients with radiation-induced hemorrhagic cystitis underwent HBO therapy. There were five men and three women with a mean age of 64.3 years (47-73). Most patients who suffer from PBS/IC can now be simply and effectively treated. The first step to successful management is accurate and timely diagnosis, which has become easier with available and validated screening and diagnostic tools such as PUF and PST. Once PBS/IC is correctly diagnosed, prompt treatment should address the main components of the disease, a dysfunctional urothelium, mast cell activation and neural upregulation. The authors report the case of a 25-year-old woman with a history of acute lymphoblastic leukaemia in complete remission after being treated, three years previously, by chemotherapy, radiotherapy and allogeneic bone marrow transplantation, who was admitted to the urology department following an episode of haematuria with severe anaemia. This clinical case report illustrates the diagnostic and therapeutic approach adopted in relation to the severity of the haematuria, in which haemostatic surgery was only considered as a last resort.

Historically, eosinophilic cystitis is a rare disorder of bladder inflammation with eosinophils infiltration diagnosed by pathologic examination. The etiology is unclear despite the past identification of many factors contributing to this disease. Eight patients with eosinophilic cystitis were reported.
