Structural changes in auditory hairs during temporary deafness.

The stereocilia of auditory hair cells were examined with a scanning electron microscope during periods of noise-induced temporary threshold … of the noise was adjusted to ensure sufficient time to fix the ears during the period of temporary deafness. Alcian blue was added to the fixative to preserve the glycocalyx of the stereocilia. The experiments were done in the basal region of the auditory organ of the alligator lizard. This region is characterized by hair cells with long free-standing ste …

[Case of cortical deafness sparing the music area].

A 33-year-old woman had developed cortical deafness with profound initial deafness lasting for eleven months after pneumococcal meningitis ten years previously. CT scan demonstrated bilateral temporal lobe lesions, predominantly on the left side where it extended into the adjacent parietal and frontal lobes. Audiometry suggested integrity of the internal ear and brain stem. Early auditory evoked potentials were present, while potentials of moderate latency and delayed potentials were abolished. Neuropsychological investigations demonstrated total absence of spoken language, contrasting with co…

Sudden deafness due to infection by Mycoplasma pneumoniae.

A case is described of sudden unilateral deafness associated with Mycoplasma pneumoniae. The hearing function of the patient returned to normal on the third day of treatment with tetracycline. M pneumoniae is a common causative agent of protean respiratory disease and the true incidence of hearing loss in these cases may be higher than reflected by the occasional reports. Therefore, appropriate laboratory studies should be included in the evaluation of sensorineural loss associated with diverse infections of the respiratory tract. Prompt diagnosis facilitates the administration of specific tre…

In vitro models of viral-induced congenital deafness.

Cytomegalovirus (CMV) infects 1 to 2 percent of liveborn infants in the United States and causes varying degrees of perceptive hearing loss. There are eight reported pathologic studies of temporal bones in CMV-infected neonates. Viral replication occurs in nonsensory endolabyrinthine epithelium, but viral antigen is also found in the organ of Corti and spiral ganglion neurons, and CMV has been cultured from perilymph. Further clinicopathologic correlation is frustrated, since the inner ear cannot be biopsied during life, and the number of temporal bones available for study is limited, owing to

Neurotological studies on Meniere's disease and sudden deafness.

During the period from January 1973 to June 1975, 60 cases with definite Meniere's disease and 30 cases with sudden deafness were listed according to such criteria for the diagnosis of both diseases as determined by the Research Committee of Japan. A neurootological assessment for both diseases were performed in our series. In patients with definite Meniere's disease, hearing impairment was characterized by deficiency in detecting low- and middle-pitched tones and fluctuation of auditory threshold in low frequency range. In sudden deafness, highly impaired hearing loss, i.e., total deafness, w…

Diagnostic significance of summating potential in sensorineural deafness.

The polarity of the summating potential wave induced by electrocochleographical examination has an important bearing upon the pathophysiology or the prognostic evaluation of sensorineural deafness. Electrocochleographical examination was performed on cases of sudden deafness, Ménière's disease, progressive sensorineural deafness, sensorineural deafness due to barotrauma, etc. When the polarity of the summating potential showed an increased negative wave, physiological blockage in sensorineural structures was revealed. In other words, under such conditions sensorineural structures have a potent…

[Sudden deafness in connection with mumps (author's transl)].

The authors report three cases of sudden deafness due to mumps. On the first and second case (children) the deafness was severe perceptive and bilateral; in the first case the perceptive deafness occurred on the eight day while in the second case the forteenth day from the onset of mumps. On the third case (male adult) the deafness was unilateral, sudden with degeneration of vestibular, which occurred during virumia of mumps. The characteristic of this case is that the total deafness of right ear is associated with right parotitis and right orchitis. According to bibliography the pathogenesis,…

Inner ear histopathology in genetically determined congenital deafness.

Histopathology in seven cases with conegenital anomalies of the inner ear of varying degree are described. Five of these had bilateral and one unilateral deafness, with function undetermined in one. Five exhibited wide variation in degree of bony aplasia. All seven had some degree of membranous aplasia. One case presented the Wildervanck syndrome. The known anomalies were limited to the ears in six. Family history of deafness was negative in six, unknown in one. Diagnosis of probable genetic origin is based mainly on the type of pathology.
