Natural 15N15N abundances constrain fixed nitrogen loss.

Nitrogen regulates primary productivity across much of the biosphere, yet fixed nitrogen loss remains poorly constrained because existing methods rely on indirect proxies or ex situ experiments. In this study, we show that natural abundances of the rare 15N15N isotopologue of dinitrogen (N2) provide a direct tracer of biological N2 production across diverse aquatic environments. N2 produced by denitrification and anammox has a near-stochastic 15N15N distribution [0 per mil (‰)], whereas atmospheric N2 carries a distinct 15N15N excess (19‰), allowing the two sources to be quantitatively disting…

Ligand-Driven Secondary Speciation of Silver Sulfide Nanoparticles Governs Fertilizer Nitrogen Fate in Paddy Soils.

Although silver sulfide nanoparticles (Ag2S-NPs) are presumed stable, their interactions with soil ligands remain poorly understood. Combining 15N tracing, synchrotron-based spectroscopy, and microbial profiling, we investigated how chloride (Cl-) and natural organic matter (NOM) regulate Ag speciation and nitrogen (N) cycling in paddy soils. We found that Cl- promoted the transformation of Ag2S-NPs toward labile Ag-Cl species, increasing Ag bioavailability by approximately 3-fold. This Ag mobilization was associated with enhanced denitrification potential, a greater unaccounted 15N fraction (…

Exploring benzene mineralization by anaerobes isolated from denitrifying enrichment cultures.

OBJECTIVES: The study aimed to isolate and characterize benzene-mineralizing anaerobes from a nitrate-reducing community. The goal was to evaluate their potential for benzene degradation under anoxic conditions and to compare composition and metabolic activity in media with and without ammonium. METHODS: Two putative isolates (Bz4 and Bz7) were obtained using classical isolation techniques under nitrate-reducing conditions with either acetate or benzene as the sole carbon and energy source. Enrichment media differed by the presence (Bz4) or absence (Bz7) of ammonium. The ability of the isolat

Selective pressure of PFOA on microbial community: Enrichment of denitrifiers harboring ARGs and the transfer of ferric-electrons.

Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), a class of permanent organic pollutants, is frequently detected in surface and ground water, with the latter … ansfer system (EET), promoting the expression of nitrate reductases, which in turn further enhanced denitrification. In summary, PFOA regulated the microbial community structure and influenced microbial TN removal functions and increased the contribution of ARGs by the denitrifier hosts, but the PFOA-induced production of ARGs may pose a serious ecological threat …

Elucidating performance failure in the use of an Anaerobic-Oxic-Anoxic (AOA) plug-flow system for biological nutrient removal.

The Anaerobic-oxic-anoxic (AOA) process is a carbon-saving and high-efficiency way to treat municipal wastewater and gets more attention. Recent reports suggest that in the AOA process, well-performed endogenous denitrification (ED), conducted by glycogen accumulating organisms (GAOs), is crucial to advanced nutrient removal. However, the consensuses about starting up and optimizing AOA, and in-situ enriching GAOs, are still lacking. Hence, this study tried to verify whether AOA could be established in an ongoing anaerobic-oxic (AO) system. For this aim, a lab-scale plug-flow reactor (working …

Mainstream nitrogen removal from low temperature and low ammonium strength municipal wastewater using hydrogel-encapsulated comammox and anammox.

Application of partial nitritation (PN)-anammox to mainstream wastewater treatment faces challenges in low water temperature and low ammonium strength. In this study, a continuous flow PN-anammox reactor with hydrogel-encapsulated comammox and anammox was designed and operated for nitrogen removal from mainstream wastewater with low temperature. Long-term operation with synthetic and real wastewater as the feed demonstrated nearly complete ammonium and total inorganic nitrogen (TIN) removal by the reactor at temperatures as low as 10 °C. A significantly decreased nitrogen removal performance a

The startup of the partial nitritation/anammox-hydroxyapatite process based on reconciling biomass and mineral to form the novel granule sludge.

The synchronous nitrogen elimination and phosphorus (P) recovery can be realized by the novel one-stage partial nitritation/anammox (PN/A)-hydroxyapatite (HAP) crystallization (PN/A-HAP) process, which seems promising in actual application. This research firstly conducted the startup of the PN/A-HAP process based on reconciling biomass and mineral to cultivate the novel sludge with the strategy of alternating enhancement of biomass accumulation and mineral formation. Within three months, the nitrogen removal rate of 1.1 kg/m3/d and the P removal efficiency of 54.2% were achieved. The biomass r

Instrumental role of bioreactors in nitrate/nitrite-dependent anaerobic methane oxidation-based biotechnologies for wastewater treatment: A review.

Recently, the nitrate/nitrite-dependent anaerobic methane oxidation (n-DAMO) processes have become a research hotspot in the field of wastewater treatment. The n-DAMO processes could not only mitigate direct and indirect carbon emissions from wastewater treatment plants but also strengthen biological nitrogen removal. However, the applications of n-DAMO-based biotechnologies face practical difficulties mainly caused by the distinctive properties of n-DAMO microorganisms and the limited/availability of methane with poor solubility. In this sense, the choice of bioreactors will play important ro

Rapid cultivation and enrichment of anammox bacteria solely using traditional activated sludge as inoculum and biocarrier in low-strength real sewage treatment.

In low-ammonia sewage anammox process, cultivation and enrichment of anammox bacteria (AnAOB) is a challenge especially from traditional activated sludge. To this end, a novel strategy solely using activated sludge as inoculum and biocarrier in a dynamic fixed-bed reactor was proposed in this study. During 115-day operation, excellent performance was achieved with influent total inorganic nitrogen (TIN) and effluent TIN of 55.3 mg·L-1 and 4.1 mg·L-1, respectively. Rapid enrichment of AnAOB (doubling time: 8.5 days) was demonstrated by augmented specific anammox activity (trace value to 1.85 mg

Start-up of single-stage partial nitrification-anammox process treating low-strength swage and its restoration from nitrate accumulation.

A single-stage partial nitrification-anammox (PN/A) reactor treating low-strength swage was operated for 288days to investigate the recovery of nitrogen removal from nitrate accumulation. The reactor was quickly started up by inoculating anammox sludge. However, nitrite oxidizing bacteria (NOB) abundance gradually increased on day 25, leading to high effluent nitrate concentration. Two strategies were executed to control the effluent nitrate. In strategy I, dissolved oxygen (DO) concentration was kept low (0.17±0.08mg/L), but nitrate production increased from 4.71 to 38.18mg-N/L. In strategy I

The contribution of exopolysaccharides induced struvites accumulation to ammonium adsorption in aerobic granular sludge.

Aerobic granular sludge from a lab-scale reactor with simultaneous nitrification/denitrification and enhanced biological phosphorus removal processes exhibited significant amount of ammonium adsorption (1.5 mg NH4+-N/g TSS at an ammonium concentration of 30 mg N/L). Potassium release accompanied ammonium adsorption, indicating an ion exchange process. The existence of potassium magnesium phosphate (K-struvite) as one of potassium sources in the granular sludge was studied by X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD). Artificially prepared K-struvite was indeed shown to adsorb ammonium. Alginate-like ex…

Accelerating electron transfer reduces CH4 and CO2 emissions in paddy soil.

As an accelerated electron transfer device, the influence of microbial electrochemical snorkel (MES) on soil greenhouse gas production remains unclear. Electron transport is the key to methane production and denitrification. We found that the N2O amount of the MES treatment was comparable to the control however the cumulative CO2 and CH4 emissions were reduced by 50% and 41%, respectively. The content of Fe2+ in MES treatment increased by 31%, which promoted the electron competition of iron reduction to methanogenesis. Furthermore, the competition among iron-reducing, nitrifying and denitrifyi…
