[The condition of dentition and the prediction of eruption at lower third molars of Japanese adolescent males].

This study was examined the relationships between the condition of dentition of lower third molar and malocclusions and shape of mandibles, and to predict eruption for third molars by their relationships. Data were obtained from 90 degrees and 60 degrees rotated cephalometlic radiographs, orthopantomographic radiographs, mandibular occlusal films and gnathostatic models of 101 males showing a complete permanent dentition anterior to the second molars and who had not had extraction lower their molars and orthodontic treatments, were selected from 147 dental students at Asahi University. they we…

Light- and electron-microscopic study of the microbial deposits present on the tongue and dentition of macropods.

The dental deposits in the kangaroos and wallabies were similar to human calculus with lysed bacterial cell remnants embedded in previously mineralized areas. The surface of the microbial deposits in contact with the enamel showed: (a) triangular structures 3-5 micron deep and 4-5 micron wide at their base repeating every 4 or 5 micron which probably occupied the remnants of Tomes processes which in macropods do not flatten out; (b) irregular, short (1 micron) projections that probably occupied the inter-prismatic areas. Few organisms were observed on the anterior or dorsal surfaces of the ton

Association between dentition defects and Alzheimer's disease risk: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Alzheimer's Disease (AD) is the most common neurodegenerative disorder among the elderly, with a steadily rising prevalence that poses a significant global public health challenge. Recently, dentition defects (DD), such as tooth loss, have gained attention as potential risk factors influencing neurocognitive health. However, the relationship between DD and AD remains inconclusive, necessitating a systematic analysis to clarify this association. METHODS: This systematic review and meta-analysis was conducted in accordance with PRISMA guidelines. We searched PubMed, Embase, Web of S…

Correlation between oral muscle pressure and malocclusion in mixed dentition: a cross-sectional study.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the relationship between oral muscle pressure and malocclusion in the mixed dentition. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Maximum tongue, lip and cheek pressure was measured using the Iowa Oral Performance Instrument (IOPI) in 3 patient cohorts: patients with (1) posterior crossbite, (2) class II relationship and (3) a control group of patients without malocclusion. Linear models were used to compare the mean differences in muscle pressure between groups, with correction for age and gender. The imbalance between lips and tongue and between lips and cheeks was calculated by the D…

Spontaneous changes in mandibular incisor crowding from mixed to permanent dentition: a systematic review.

INTRODUCTION: Dental crowding is the most prevalent malocclusion in the mixed and permanent detitions and can have a major impact on dentofacial esthetics. However, adjustments to the development and growth of the dentition can potentiate self-correction of dental crowding during childhood. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the physiological behavior of mandibular incisor crowding in the transition from mixed to permanent dentition. METHODOLOGY: Five electronic databases (PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, LILACS and LIVIVO) and part of the gray literature (Proquest and Google Scholar) were investigated, …

Retrospective evaluation of traction time for impacted dilacerated maxillary central incisors in mixed dentition.

PURPOSES: This study aimed to contribute to understanding the factors affecting the time of traction treatment of impacted dilacerated maxillary central incisors. METHODS: This retrospective study included children aged 8 - 11 years with a history of trauma, who applied to the pediatric dentistry clinics of Marmara University, School of Dentistry, between December 2013 and December 2019, and were treated for unilateral impacted dilacerated maxillary upper central incisors. Children's age, sex, digital panoramic radiographs, cone-beam computed tomography, and intraoral photographs were retriev

Reference parameters for normality and associated factors to hard palate during mixed dentition phase.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the association among dimensions of the hard palate according to the sexes, skin color, and periods of the mixed dentition and present reference parameters of normality for this stage of development. METHODS: This cross-sectional study evaluated a representative sample of children between the ages of 7 and 13 years in Santa Maria, southern Brazil. The outcomes of the study were the dimensions of the palate: width measurements and depth. Sociodemographic characteristics and related oral measures were also assessed. Adjusted linear regression model were used to evaluate the…

Cone-beam CT evaluation of temporomandibular joint in permanent dentition according to Angle's classification.

OBJECTIVES: To compare characteristics of temporomandibular joint (TMJ) and related structures according to Angle class I, II1, II2, and III. METHODS: 123 Chinese patients (13-36 years old, 60 males, and 63 females) were classified in four groups according to Angle's classification: skeletal class I (31 patients), skeletal class II division 1 (30 patients), skeletal class II division 2 (30 patients), and skeletal class III (32 patients). Left and right TMJs of each subject were evaluated independently with cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT). The position of condyle in the joint fossa was an

Secondary dentition characteristics in an ethnic Chinese orthodontic population: A retrospective cross-sectional study.

AIM: To determine the prevalence of dental anomalies and its association with gender. METHODS: This retrospective cross-sectional study was conducted using radiographs, photographs and clinical records of patients who attended the Department of Orthodontics at the National Dental Centre Singapore. Records of 2508 ethnic Chinese orthodontic patients aged 14-25 years were examined for the prevalence of dental anomalies in the permanent dentition, excluding third molars. Statistical analyses were performed using SAS version 9.4 (SAS Institute Inc.). Logistic regression was used to determine the …

Preventive orthodontic approach for functional mandibular shift in early mixed dentition: A case report.

The case reported here highlights the importance of examination of functional occlusion along with static occlusion. Any undetected malocclusion during early mixed dentition has potency to alter the growth and function of stomatognathic system. Premature contacts in primary canine region is the most prevalent cause of functional mandibular shift and can lead to TMJ problems for the prevalence of self correction of such malocclusion is very low if not intervened. A case of functional mandibular shift due to faulty canine guidance because of premature contacts is discussed here. Selective grindi…
