A case of autoimmune progesterone dermatitis misdiagnosed as allergic contact dermatitis.

Autoimmune progesterone dermatitis is a rare autoimmune response to endogenous progesterone that usually occurs in fertile females. Cutaneous or mucosal lesions develop cyclically during the luteal phase of the menstrual cycle when progesterone levels are elevated. Symptoms usually start 3-10 days before menstruation and resolve 1-2 days after menstruation ceases. We report the case of a 48-year-old woman with intermittent eczematous skin lesions of the legs, forearms, and buttocks. She was diagnosed with allergic contact dermatitis, and topical steroids were prescribed. Her skin eruptions wax

Allergic contact dermatitis to plant extracts in patients with cosmetic dermatitis.

Cosmetic contact allergy is commonly seen in patients undergoing patch testing, with fragrance one of the most frequently implicated ingredients. Many cosmetics contain plant extracts either as a fragrance or for medicinal properties. With a vogue for natural products there is an increase in their use. We have performed a prospective study over a 2-year period looking at the prevalence of contact allergy to plants in patients diagnosed with cosmetic dermatitis. In addition, we have performed a review of the products of two popular cosmetic companies, examining product labelling and the prevale

Current knowledge on biomarkers for contact sensitization and allergic contact dermatitis.

Contact sensitization is common and affects up to 20% of the general population. The clinical manifestation of contact sensitization is allergic contact dermatitis. This is a clinical expression that is sometimes difficult to distinguish from other types of dermatitis, for example irritant and atopic dermatitis. Several studies have examined the pathogenesis and severity of allergic contact dermatitis by measuring the absence or presence of various biomarkers. In this review, we provide a non-systematic overview of biomarkers that have been studied in allergic contact dermatitis. These include

The significance of previous contact dermatitis for elicitation of contact allergy to nickel.

In 2 earlier studies, we found increased nickel re-test reactivity at earlier experimentally induced nickel eczema sites. The aim of this study was to investigate if earlier contact dermatitis caused by another allergen or earlier irritant contact dermatitis also influenced the reactivity when nickel was applied topically on earlier but healed dermatitis sites. Twenty-three females with contact allergy to both nickel and cobalt were involved in the study. Experimental contact dermatitis from nickel, cobalt and SLS was induced on the lower back. One month later, challenge patch testing with a s

[Irritant contact dermatitis caused by direct contact with oleander (Nerium oleander)].

BACKGROUND: Although the oleander plant is practically ubiquitous throughout the Mediterranean area, very few publications refer to its cutaneous toxicity. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Herein, we report two cases of irritant contact dermatitis caused by oleander. The patients in question were twins who had oleander leaves applied directly to their face for 20minutes. The initial lesions consisted of periorbital erythema, followed by the emergence of papules and macules. Vesicles and crusts appeared over the ensuing 24hours. Treatment included withdrawal of the toxic agent, prescription of oral antih

Acacia seyal and Terminalia brownii associated airborne contact dermatitis (Dukhan dermatitis).

Taking scented smoke baths (Dukhan) is a universal custom among African women who indulge in it for pleasure, cleanliness, health, and for restoration after childbirth. The woods used in this procedure are usually Acacia seyal and Terminalia brownii. This report is a case series of 11 women with brown-erythematous excoriated papules, plaques, and lichenification confined to the sites of scented smoke baths. They were diagnosed with airborne contact dermatitis on the basis of patient history, existence of dust agents, the morphology and distribution of the lesions, the results of epicutaneous t

Allergic contact dermatitis to chlorhexidine in children.

BACKGROUND: Hypersensitivity to chlorhexidine is rare in children. The usefulness of different diagnostic tests for allergic contact dermatitis (ACD) is unknown. OBJECTIVE: We aim to describe a case series of children with hypersensitivity to chlorhexidine and to compare the results of different diagnostic tests. PATIENTS: Nine children with hypersensitivity to chlorhexidine were included. Only six of these children and their parents consented to a comprehensive allergy assessment, which included the prick test, intradermal test, patch test, and repeated open application test (ROAT). RESULT

Contact Dermatitis to Ophthalmic Solutions: An Update.

Eyelid and periorbital dermatitis remains a distressing and recalcitrant disease. Contact dermatitis remains the most common cause of eyelid and periorbital dermatitis. Ophthalmic solutions used in the treatment of ophthalmic conditions can often be the cause. This article is an update of our previous study, summarizing the contact allergens involved and the new test concentrations reported to investigate through patch testing. New insights found during the review are also documented.

Heavy metals in contact dermatitis: A review.

Contact dermatitis is an inflammatory skin reaction caused by direct contact with chemical substances in the environment and can either be irritant or allergic in nature. The clinical symptoms of contact dermatitis, include local skin rash, itching, redness, swelling, and lesions. Nowadays, 15-20% of people have some degree of contact dermatitis, which can be more or less severe. Immune responses in allergic contact dermatitis (ACD) are due to the effects of cytokines and allergen-specific CD4+ and CD8+ T cells on the skin. Acids and alkalis such as drain cleaners, plants such as poinsettias,

Contact dermatitis associated with a cosmetic cream.

BACKGROUND: Cosmetic contact dermatitis (CCD) is a very common cosmetic adverse reaction, but there are few reports of adverse reactions to breast enhancement cream. METHODS: We reported a case of adverse skin reactions after applying a cosmetic cream and performed patch tests of cosmetic series and cosmetic product. RESULTS: After drug treatment, the patient's symptoms improved significantly. The cosmetic series patch test showed that she was allergic to thimerosal, and the cosmetic product patch also showed positive. CONCLUSIONS: The adverse reactions of dermatologists to cosmetics cannot

Contact Dermatitis Caused by Efinaconazole and Luliconazole.

We report a case of contact dermatitis caused by both efinaconazole, a topical triazole antifungal drug, and luliconazole, a topical imidazole antifungal drug. Positive patch test reactions were observed with efinaconazole and luliconazole. A patch test with lanoconazole also elicited a positive reaction. We hypothesized that structural similarity between luliconazole and lanoconazole led to cross-reaction, and that the dithiolane ring common to both drugs or the structure of the vinyl imidazole with a dithiolane ring could be the antigenic determinant. Since efinaconazole and luliconazole hav
