BACKGROUND: The diagnosis of a patient with erythroderma may be difficult and sometimes pose a challenge for both dermatologist and pathologist. The role of dermoscopy in this area seems to be poorly investigated. There are only a few reports, with limited number of patients, describing dermoscopic features in erythroderma of various origins. To the best of our knowledge, none of the previous studies had included trichoscopic examination.
OBJECTIVES: Analysis of dermoscopic and trichoscopic patterns in series of patients with erythroderma.

Although erythroderma is a well-recognized entity in the adult age groups and has been studied by various authors, there is a paucity of studies on erythroderma in the pediatric age group. It poses a greater challenge to the dermatologist and pediatrician because of its potential life threatening nature. As a result of studies made (biopsy specimens of damaged skin from seven patients presenting with the erythrodermic stage of mycosis fungoides) a conclusion was reached that at the given stage the following two processes take place: (1) a rise in the proliferative activity of keratinocytes and (2) disturbances their differentiation. These ultrastructural manifestations can serve as criteria for a well-timed diagnosis of mycosis fungoides to be made.

This report concerns a white woman with characteristic manifestations of Ofuji papuloerythroderma. This erythroderma results from a coalescence of papular sheets that completely spare skin folds. This rare disease is associated with high blood eosinophilia. In this case superficial lymph nodes appeared a few months later and peripheral T cell nonepidermotropic skin lymphoma occurred, which raises questions as to the nosologic implications of papuloerythroderma.

Biopsy specimens from 43 patients with psoriasis were studied by immunofluorescence microscopy. Deposits of complement C3 and/or immunoglobulins were seen in the vessel walls and/or in the dermal-epidermal junction of all of 21 patients with pustular psoriasis, acute guttate psoriasis, psoriatic arthropathy and erythroderma. similar deposits were seen in nine out of 22 patients with psoriasis vulgaris. A case of sarcoidosis with generalized erythroderma, exfoliation and micropapule formation in a 6-year-old boy is presented. Follicular spiny keratoses, resembling those seen in pityriasis rubra pilaris, and palmo-plantar pitting were among the other extraordinary features in this case. The epidermis overlying the widespread sarcoid granulomata showed parakeratosis, lymphocytic infiltration and degeneration of the basal layer.
