Occupational skin disease in hairdressers.

Irritant or allergic contact dermatitis of the hands is the main occupational hazard for hairdressers. The shampoos, dyes, and waving solutions that must be applied by hairdressers are the agents involved. There is a significant association between the development of occupationally induced hand dermatitis and a history of atopy, particularly atopic dermatitis.

Are obsessive-compulsive disorders and personality disorders sufficiently considered in occupational dermatoses? A discussion based on three case reports.

Hand dermatitis is relatively common in the general population. Among work-related diseases, it is the most common form of occupational skin disease. Irritant hand dermatitis is the most frequent type. Besides wet work and direct contact to irritating occupational substances frequent hand washing can damage the barrier function of the skin facilitating the manifestation of hand dermatitis that frequently occurs chronically. According to own observations the role of obsessive-compulsive washing as part of an anxiety disorder or personality disorders may not be considered sufficiently. A possibl

Generalized eruption with severe liver dysfunction associated with occupational exposure to trichloroethylene.

Generalized dermatitis due to trichloroethylene is rare. A 21-year-old printer developed exfoliative dermatitis with mucous membrane involvement, fever and liver dysfunction after a 2-week occupational exposure to trichloroethylene. Positive patch-test reactions to trichloroethylene and to one of its metabolites, trichloroethanol, were observed. This dermatitis is considered to be mediated by a delayed-type hypersensitivity mechanism.

Prevalence and risk factors of occupational hand dermatoses in electronics workers.

The electronics industry is becoming an important mainstream in the workforce in some developed countries and in Taiwan. Among patients with occupational hand dermatitis in northern Taiwan, workers from electronics industries were one of the most important groups. We conducted a field investigation to determine the prevalence, patterns and risk factors of occupational hand dermatoses among electronics workers. The survey was conducted in five electronics plants using a self-administered questionnaire on skin symptoms and risk factors. Skin examination and patch testing were followed for those

Occupational Dermatosis.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The purpose of this review is to provide an update on occupational contact dermatitis including gaps in knowledge and practice. Occupational contact dermatitis is the most common occupational skin disease. RECENT FINDINGS: New sources of exposure for known allergens and new allergens are continually being reported. Through clinical databases and surveillance systems, effects of prevention efforts or introduction of new allergens or new uses of known allergens can be monitored. Though the diagnostic process is clear, there are delays in workers seeking care. As early detecti

Peri-urban aquatic plant culture and skin disease in Phnom Penh, Cambodia.

A cross-sectional study with follow-up was done in five communities involved in aquaculture in peri-urban Phnom Penh, Cambodia, to assess the association between skin disease, particularly dermatitis and occupational wastewater exposure. From 200 selected households 650 household members aged > or = 15 years were visited and examined dermatologically three times in July 2004, January and May 2005. Overall dermatitis prevalence was 6.1%. However, all cases (116) were found in the two wastewater villages involved in aquatic plant culture. Risk factor analysis restricted to the two wastewater vil

[Diagnostic criteria for occupational allergic diseases].

Exposure to allergens at workplace is more frequent nowadays. The most common occupational allergic diseases with proven association of the disease and occupational exposure determining damage to function and/or morphology and confirming the disease by diagnostic workup are occupational allergic rhinitis, occupational asthma, allergic alveolitis and allergic contact dermatitis. This paper describes diagnostic algorithms of differential diagnosis to confirm the diagnosis of occupational disease and to take measures for preserving functional capacity of the employees.

Occupational skin disease in mining: an Australian case series.

The mining industry has one of the highest rates of occupational disease across all industries. However, occupational skin disease (OSD) is not commonly reported in this industry, although has been estimated to affect up to 51 people per 100,000 workers, with contact dermatitis accounting for the majority of cases. It often has a poor prognosis and leads to days lost from work. There have been relatively few reports regarding the specific forms of OSD encountered by miners worldwide. We report our experience of miners attending our Occupational Dermatology Clinic and our investigations at two

The three moments of skin cream application: an evidence-based proposal for use of skin creams in the prevention of irritant contact dermatitis in the workplace.

Contact dermatitis is one of the most common occupational diseases, with serious impact on quality of life, lost days at work and a condition that may be chronically relapsing. Regular prophylactic skin cream application is widely acknowledged to be an effective prevention strategy against occupational contact dermatitis; however, compliance rates remain low. To present a simple programme for skin cream application in the workplace with focus on implementation to drive down the rate of occupational irritant contact dermatitis, an expert panel of eight international dermatologists combined pers

Fragrances: Contact Allergy and Other Adverse Effects.

This article gives an overview of fragrance allergy. The following subjects are discussed: composition of perfumes, contact with fragrances, diagnosing fragrance allergy, frequency of allergy, clinical picture of allergic contact dermatitis, culprit products, occupational contact dermatitis, and other adverse effects of fragrances. For diagnosing fragrance sensitization, personal products and a fragrance series may need to be tested in addition to the baseline series. In the general adult population, up to 4.5% may be allergic to fragrance materials, and in consecutive patients patch tested fo

Urticarial contact dermatitis in food handlers.

OBJECTIVE: To show that prick testing (using fresh samples of the food suspected from the patient's history) and not only patch testing is the appropriate investigation in selected cases of hand dermatitis in patients who spend considerable time handling foods (for example, catering workers, cooks). SETTING: The Contact and Occupational Dermatitis Clinic at the Skin and Cancer Foundation, a tertiary referral centre in Sydney. PATIENTS: Fourteen patients with hand dermatitis present for an average of 6.17 years referred by dermatologists and occupational health physicians. INTERVENTIONS: Pat

Irritant Contact Dermatitis.

Contact dermatitis accounts for 95% of occupational skin disorders. Irritant contact dermatitis (ICD) is often caused by cumulative exposure to weak irritants, accounting for 80% of all cases of contact dermatitis. ICD can co-exist with atopic dermatitis (AD) and allergic contact dermatitis (ACD). Patients with AD and ACD may have a lower inflammatory threshold for developing ICD. Therefore, it needs to be distinguished from lesions of AD and ACD. ICD Patients report stinging and burning in excess of pruritus. Pruritus is classically reported by patients with AD and ACD. ICD lesions are typica
