The spectrum of skin diseases seen in a Jamaican tertiary academic medical center.

BACKGROUND: The diversity of skin diseases seen in a dermatology clinic varies with the composition of the population. OBJECTIVE: The aim was to document the spectrum of cutaneous disorders seen and the variation with sex, age, and seasons. METHODS: This was a retrospective study on new patients attending an academic dermatology clinic in Jamaica during 2018. Disease frequencies and prevalence by sex, seasons, and age group were recorded. RESULTS: There were 547 new patients with 329 females (60%) and 218 males (40%). The mean age was 36.8 years, ranging from 2 weeks old to 103 years old. T

HLA antigens and susceptibility to psoriasis vulgaris in a non-Caucasian population.

Fifty-four unrelated Japanese patients with psoriasis vulgaris were tissue typed using the Sixth International Histocompatibility Workshop antisera. Two control groups were included in this study: Thirty-one pustulosis palmaris et plantaris and 17 seborrheic dermatitis as a disease control and 66 normal, healthy, unrelated Japanses as a reference. HLA-Al (P = 0.0065) from the A locus and HLA-BW37 (P = 0.0164) from the B locus were found to occur with increased frequency in patients with psoriasis vulgaris. No significant difference in antigen frequencies in pustulosis palmaris et plantaris was

[Eczematous disorders in adolescents].

Eczematous disorders in adolescence (definition WHO: the period between 10 and 20 years) are common and include mainly atopic dermatitis, contact eczema, and seborrheic dermatitis. They all share the similarity of inflammatory reactions which mainly affect the epidermis and can take a chronic course, depending on the underlying dermatosis. In the following article, the particularities of eczematous diseases in adolescents are discussed.

[Psoriasis and eczema on the scalp].

BACKGROUND: Diseases of the scalp are a severe burden for affected patients because they are often visible, frequently pruritic and hard to treat. Therefore, a proper diagnosis is extremely important. DIAGNOSIS: If the patient presents with erythematous, scaly skin lesions of the scalp, psoriasis has to be differentiated from atopic eczema, seborrheic eczema and contact eczema (allergic or toxic). The inspection of the entire body as well as a detailed history are essential for establishing the diagnosis. THERAPY: Topical corticosteroids are the therapeutic agents of choice for all of these

[Prevalence of cutaneous lesions in Freixo de Espada à Cinta].

Incidence or prevalence studies on cutaneous lesions in general populations are not available. The community observed by the authors (Freixo de Espada à Cinta, North-Eastern Portugal) is relatively closed. A pre-tested questionnaire for socio-demographic and clinical information was used and a physical observation was conducted in January and February 1994 by the Dermatology Team of Santo António General Hospital, Oporto. The analysis was supported by independent tests (Pearson and Fisher chi 2, Student-t, Mann-Whitney and Kruskall-Wallis). The Spearman correlation coefficient was also used. T

Dermoscopy in General Dermatology: A Practical Overview.

Over the last few years, dermoscopy has been shown to be a useful tool in assisting the noninvasive diagnosis of various general dermatological disorders. In this article, we sought to provide an up-to-date practical overview on the use of dermoscopy in general dermatology by analysing the dermoscopic differential diagnosis of relatively common dermatological disorders grouped according to their clinical presentation, i.e. dermatoses presenting with erythematous-desquamative patches/plaques (plaque psoriasis, eczematous dermatitis, pityriasis rosea, mycosis fungoides and subacute cutaneous lup

[Dermatological diseases in psychiatry].

From Ekbom's syndrome to neurotic acne, from seborrheic dermatitis to psoriasis or rosacea, without forgetting atopic dermatitis in children, these dermatological illnesses all have a direct or indirect link with psychiatric pathology In the field of dermatological infections, treatment must be provided by both the dermatologist and psychiatrist. The skin is an interface, attacked by external factors, as well as expressing psychic conflicts. In this context, there is a real place for psychodermatology.

Cutaneous manifestations of defective host defenses.

Those caring for children should recognize that cutaneous findings are common in children with host defense defects. Atopic dermatitis, recurrent or persistent pyodermas, candidiasis and lupus-like syndromes, should signal the possibility of host defense deficiencies. Particularly the findings of atopic dermatitis and recurrent skin abscesses should alert the clinician to determine serum IgE levels and neutrophil chemotaxis in such patients. The triad of generalized seborrheic dermatitis, failure to thrive, and diarrhea in an infant should bring to mind Leiner disease or severe combined immuno

An unsuspected sign of cutaneous allergy.

An eczematous eruption in the superior retroauricular areas of the scalp and often on the posterior aspects of the pinnas may be seen in about 30% of allergic children. The eruption is not generally noticed because the overhanging hair covers the affected areas. The dermatitis is seen mainly in those children afflicted with bronchial asthma, perennial allergic rhinitis, or both. A previous history of atopic or seborrheic dermatitis is, as a rule, not elicited.

Seborrheic area erythema as a common skin manifestation in Japanese patients with dermatomyositis.

BACKGROUND: Although dermatomyositis (DM)-associated facial erythema was noted in the nasolabial folds of Japanese patients, DM-associated facial erythema other than heliotrope rash has drawn little attention in previous studies. OBJECTIVES: To characterize phenotypical features and frequencies of erythema, especially those in the seborrheic area of the head, in DM patients. METHODS: A retrospective study on skin manifestations in 33 DM patients followed up at our department during the past 15 years was conducted. RESULTS: Macular violaceous erythema (MVE) in the seborrheic area of the face

Contact Alopecia: Improvement of Alopecia with Discontinuation of Fluocinolone Oil in Individuals Allergic to Balsam Fragrance.

Inflammatory scalp dermatoses can be associated with alopecia, which is nonscarring and reversible in its early stages. This association has been described in seborrheic dermatitis, psoriasis, and atopic dermatitis. We describe three girls with alopecia aggravated by contact allergy to balsam fragrances. All three had complete resolution with avoidance of balsam of Peru and other balsam derivatives (including discontinuation of fluocinolone oil, which contains balsam of pine).

[Dandruff--an atopic sign?].

Dandruff is a sign of low specificity but high sensitivity for atopic constitution. Of 32 (40%) patients consulting the clinic for other reasons than dandruff, atopic dermatitis, or seborrheic dermatitis, 13 had raised IgE PRIST values of greater than 120 IU/ml. In only 6 (19%) of these patients was screening for atopy completely negative (family and personal history, total and specific IgG, prick test).

General dermatologic use of hydroxamic acid.

Fifty clinic patients with mild to moderately severe dermatoses were treated for three weeks with bufexamac, a hydroxamic acid compound with anti-inflammatory properties. Half the patients had either contact or seborrheic dermatitis; the remaining 25 were distributed among five other diagnostic categories. Evaluation and grading of signs and symptoms were done at initial visit; changes resulting from topical treatment with bufexamac cream were monitored at weekly intervals. Forty-three (86%) patients had a good or very good response; seven were treatment failures. In terms of weighted response

[A study of culture-based easy identification system for Malassezia].

Most species of this genus are lipid-dependent yeasts, which colonize the seborrheic part of the skin, and they have been reported to be associated with pityriasis versicolor, Malassezia folliculitis, seborrheic dermatitis, and atopic dermatitis. Malassezia have been re-classified into 7 species based on molecular biological analysis of nuclear ribosomal DNA/RNA and new Malassezia species were reported. As members of the genus Malassezia share similar morphological and biochemical characteristics, it was thought to be difficult to differentiate between them based on phenotypic features. While

Cytochemical expression of epidermal peroxidase and cytochrome oxidase activities in pathological skin conditions of man.

The cytochemical expression of epidermal peroxidase and cytochrome oxidase activity was recently well documented in normal human skin. We report here its expression in basal and squamous cell carcinomas, actinic keratoses, psoriasis, allergic contact dermatitis, seborrheic keratoses, and autosomal dominant ichthyosis vulgaris. The two enzyme activities were evaluated using the diaminobenzidine method. If present, the two enzymes were always localized in the same organelles as in normal epidermis: endogenous peroxidase in the nuclear envelope and endoplasmic reticulum, and cytochrome oxidase in…

Atopic Dermatitis With Comorbid Skin Diseases: Recognition and Successful Treatment.

Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a common, chronic inflammatory skin disease that affects both children and adults. Atopic dermatitis is characterized by pruritus, erythema, induration, and scale, which can present with other conditions that may mimic or complicate AD; often leading to diagnostic challenges. Differential diagnoses include seborrheic dermatitis, contact dermatitis, psoriasis, infections, inflammatory/autoimmune disorders, cutaneous T-cell lymphoma, and immunodeficiency-related dermatoses; to name a few. This review article focuses on AD and its associated cutaneous comorbid diseases.
