Is it worth weighing pregnant women in a developing country?

In order to find out which criteria could be useful for pregnancy screening and referral, the maternal weight gain curves of 251 patients have been reviewed. Three alarm signs (gain greater than 1.0 kg/w; no gain for 4 weeks and weight loss) have been assessed and correlated with the occurrence of macrosomia, twin pregnancy, fetal intrauterine growth retardation and intrauterine death. Although excessive weight gain appears statistically linked to preeclampsia, macrosomia and twin pregnancy the sensitivity and specificity of a system using these criteria are unacceptably low.

Stress among factory workers in a developing country.

This cross-sectional study reveals that a significant proportion (35%) of the sampled population of factory workers experienced measurable health problems in the form of anxiety, sleep disturbance, depression, somatic complaints and other clinical indicators of stress. Job stress and social support levels experienced by the group of workers judged 'sick' were significantly different from the control group, particularly so for employees in the lower levels of work hierarchy. In consonance with findings from the literature, job stress has a significant impact on mental health, with all the job s

The study of caries prevalence in children in a developing country.

This study has shown that prevalence of dental caries in a rural section of a developing country is related to age, socioeconomic status, and specific location. Caries prevalence is also directly correlated with family consumption of sugar. No correlation could be found, however, with regard to sex. Further study should be conducted on the relationship of individual practices (sugar consumption and hygiene) to caries-prevalence. In particular, data could be collected on practices in the communities where the school surveys were conducted in order to define the factors underlying the high preva

[Health consequences of the economic development of tropical countries].

If the usefulness of industrial development of the Third World is not really discussed, nevertheless it appears more and more necessary to evaluate carefully its advantages and disadvantages on the health status and the well being of the population concerned. Indeed, the evil consequences are well known: new outbreak of bilharziosis, malaria, onchocerciasis, but also arbovirosis, tuberculosis and S.T.D. On the other hand, we must consider the positive aspects of economic development: improvement of hygiene, constructions of health centers, increased food production. In order to minimize the dr

A profile of heart disease in children in a developing country.

Experience is presented of paediatric cardiology in a well-equipped and staffed centre during a six-year period in a developing country. Despite the success of the programme in offering first class medical investigation and surgical care to a large number of children, it is estimated that only about 2% of the existing cases in the country were operated upon. The main problems were the large numbers of cases, creating long waiting lists, and the lack of adequately trained paramedical personnel. Although paediatric cardiology in other developing countries is by no means a first priority, thousan…

Patterns and problems of drug consumption in a developing country.

Delayed and sometimes total lack of communications, lower standards of medical care, low physician: population ratio, absence of monitoring systems affect all phases of drug consumption in developing countries--from procedures for introducing a new drug to its marketing on a broad scale, and ultimate decline. The number of prescriptions and the choice of drug are determined only partly by physicians. Such other factors as medicaments furnished by the government either free or at a small charge, the type of health service, accessibility to paramedical and nonmedical advice, as well as hard-sell…

[Development of indications for cesarean section in the Czech Republic and certain developed countries].

The author analyzes the reasons for the rapid increase of pregnancies terminated by caesarean section; in some countries (USA, Canada and others) the frequency is as high as 20%. The main reason was a change of indication for caesarean section: not only hazard to the mother, but above all hazard to the foetus. It seems however that there is no relationship between the frequency of caesarean and the level of perinatal mortality. On the contrary, in many instances caesarean section increases the risk of mother and foetus and the neonate. In the Czech Republic the rate of caesarean sections was 7

Impact of air pollution on life expectancy in Asian developing countries: Does renewable energy adoption matter?

Air pollution (AIRP) remains a critical public health and environmental challenge in developing Asia, where rapid industrialization and fossil fuel dependence continue to undermine population health and longevity. This study examines the impact of AIRP on life expectancy (LIFE) and investigates whether renewable energy adoption moderates this relationship. AIRP is proxied by carbon dioxide (CO₂) and nitrous oxide (N₂O) emissions, which capture pollution-intensive energy systems, industrial activity, and agricultural practices that jointly generate health-damaging co-pollutants, particularly in

Food safety-oriented climate adaptation strategies in pastoral dairy systems of developing countries: A scoping review.

Pastoral dairy systems provide livelihoods for millions of inhabitants of arid and semi-arid lands (ASALs) in developing countries. However, these systems are threatened by adverse climate change. Complex and erratic rainfall patterns, increasing temperatures, and more frequent droughts are not only reducing milk production but also exacerbating risks to its safety. This scoping review synthesizes evidence from peer-reviewed scientific articles published between 2000 and 2025, retrieved from publicly available databases, to examine the effects of climate stressors on milk safety in smallholder…

The Dilemma of Providing Advanced Hemophilia Treatments in Developing Countries - For Whom, by Whom and Where?

Hemophilia, a congenital deficiency of factor VIII (hemophilia A) or factor IX (hemophilia B), leads to recurrent bleeding episodes that may cause progressive joint damage and long-term disability. Traditional management relies on intravenous factor replacement therapy; however, limited half-life, immunogenicity, venous access challenges, and the burden of frequent infusions have prompted the development of extended half-life (EHL) factor products. Although EHL therapies represent an important advancement, they only partially reduce treatment burden and do not fully meet expectations for impro

The social paradoxes of commercial surrogacy in developing countries: India before the new law of 2018.

BACKGROUND: Commercial surrogacy is a highly controversial issue that leads to heated debates in the feminist literature, especially when surrogacy takes place in developing countries and when it is performed by local women for wealthy international individuals. The objective of this article is to confront common assumptions with the narratives and experiences described by Indian surrogates themselves. METHODS: This qualitative study included 33 surrogates interviewed in India (Mumbai, Chennai and New Delhi) who were at different stages of the surrogacy process. They were recruited through fi…

Developing a Sustainable Renal Transplant Program in Low- and Middle-Income Countries: Outcome, Challenges, and Solutions.

INTRODUCTION: The initiation of a kidney transplant program, in a low- and middle-income country, while striving to maintain excellent outcomes and adhere to high ethical, legal standards, is a formidable task. Herein, we review the outcomes and challenges of a living donor kidney transplant program from its inception to sustainability, in Guyana, South America. METHODS: This is a retrospective review of a living donor kidney transplant program instituted in Guyana in 2008. Data included recipient and donor demographics, cause of renal failure, donor-recipient matching and relationship, perio

Identifying areas for improvement in epilepsy management in developing countries: An experience of neurocooperation in Cameroon.

INTRODUCTION: Epilepsy is especially prevalent in developing countries: incidence and prevalence rates are at least twice as high as in our setting. Epilepsy is also highly stigmatised, and few resources are available for its management. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We performed a descriptive observational study in December 2016, distributing a questionnaire on epilepsy management to healthcare professionals from 3 different hospitals in Cameroon. Data are presented as means or percentages. RESULTS: Thirty-eight healthcare providers participated in the survey; 42.1% were female and mean age was 40.…

Congenital tuberculosis after in vitro fertilization: suggestion for tuberculosis tests in infertile women in developing countries.

Congenital tuberculosis (CTB) after in vitro fertilization (IVF) is a major new problem in developing countries. Only 16 cases of CTB after IVF have been reported, and no tuberculosis (TB) tests were performed before IVF in these cases. However, on the basis of data in the literature and from the World Health Organization, the incidence of CTB has been substantially underestimated. We describe two cases of CTB after IVF in detail in our center and provide new insight into the important issue of controlling TB vertical transmission in developing countries. Performing an early diagnosis of CTB, …

Dissemination of gastroenteric viruses in the production of lettuce in developing countries: a public health concern.

Investigation of major viruses responsible for acute viral gastroenteritis, such as norovirus (NoV), rotavirus species A (RVA) and human adenovirus (HAdV), was conducted in the mountainous region of the state of Rio de Janeiro in a lettuce-producing area. Irrigation water and lettuce samples were collected at different production stages. Viruses were concentrated using an adsorption-elution method and detected by quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR). We detected HAdV in all collection points, although no virus infectivity was shown. The RVA was the most prevalent virus from both water

Introduction: The Complexity and Challenge of Preventing, Treating, and Managing Blood Diseases in the Developing Countries.

Managing hematologic disorders in developing countries poses problems not encountered in Western societies. The clinical features of hematologic conditions may be modified by malnutrition, chronic bacterial infection, or parasitic illness. Iron deficiency is the major factor in anemia worldwide. Anemia is more common in the wet season when malaria transmission peaks. After anemia, eosinophilia is the next most common hematologic abnormality in children in the tropics. Infection with the human immunodeficiency virus can cause hematologic abnormalities. The pattern of distribution of primary dis…
