Traumatic basal ganglia hemorrhage: clinicopathologic features and outcome.

Traumatic basal ganglia hemorrhage (TBGH) is probably secondary to rupture of lenticulostriate or anterior choroidal arteries. We evaluated … ar white matter), not size. Prolonged muteness occurred in 4 of 6; these 4 patients also had severe diffuse axonal injury. Clinical findings corresponded with previously recognized subcortical hemisphere profiles. All achieved a moderate disability or good recovery rating on the Glasgow Outcome Scale. Rather than any features of the TBGH itself, duration of coma and/or …

Role of hypoxia-inducible factor-1α in preconditioning-induced protection of retinal ganglion cells in glaucoma.

PURPOSE: We recently demonstrated in a mouse model of glaucoma that endogenous epigenetic mechanisms can be activated by a repetitive hypoxic preconditioning (RHP) stimulus to provide robust retinal ganglion cell (RGC) protection. Although we also provided evidence that RHP prevents or delays the apoptotic demise of the RGC soma, the mechanisms responsible for signaling this epigenetic response, as well as the effectors of the glaucoma-tolerant phenotype at the somatic and axonal levels, remain unidentified. In the present study, we used conditional mutant mice lacking hypoxia-inducible factor

Thrombin and protein C pathway in peripheral nerve Schwann cells.

Thrombin and activated protein C (aPC) bound to the endothelial protein C receptor (EPCR) both activate protease-activated receptor 1 (PAR1) generating either harmful or protective signaling respectively. In the present study we examined the localization of PAR-1 and EPCR and thrombin activity in Schwann glial cells of normal and crushed peripheral nerve and in Schwannoma cell lines. In the sciatic crush model nerves were excised 1h, 1, 4, and 7days after the injury. Schwannoma cell lines produced high levels of prothrombin which is converted to active thrombin and expressed both EPCR and PAR-

Shaken infant syndrome: developmental neuropathology, progressive cortical dysplasia, and epilepsy.

This study describes the developmental neuropathology of two infants who survived 7 and 9 years, respectively, an episode of violent shaking (shaken infant syndrome) early in their lives. The shaking injuries include cortical and subcortical contusions, hemorrhages, hypoxic/ischemic and axonal damage, and severe edema. The types, distribution, and resolution of these shaking injuries are detailed by sequential radiographic studies and by pathologic examination at postmortem. Despite their severity and extent, these injuries resolved in a relatively short period of time. By 6 months, the origin

Neuromyelitis optica study model based on chronic infusion of autoantibodies in rat cerebrospinal fluid.

BACKGROUND: Devic's neuromyelitis optica (NMO) is an autoimmune astrocytopathy, associated with central nervous system inflammation, demyelination, and neuronal injury. Several studies confirmed that autoantibodies directed against aquaporin-4 (AQP4-IgG) are relevant in the pathogenesis of NMO, mainly through complement-dependent toxicity leading to astrocyte death. However, the effect of the autoantibody per se and the exact role of intrathecal AQP4-IgG are still controversial. METHODS: To explore the intrinsic effect of intrathecal AQP4-IgG, independent from additional inflammatory effector

White matter microstructural abnormalities in neurological poste-acute sequelae of coronavirus disease: Imaging signatures consistent with persistent neuroinflammation.

BACKGROUND: Essential workers, many of whom were infected with coronavirus disease (COVID-19) at work before vaccination, developed Neurological Post-Acute Sequelae of COVID-19 (N-PASC) at high rates. METHOD: To characterize white matter abnormalities associated with N-PASC and to examine correlates of symptomatology, we recruited 54 participants with N-PASC and compared them to 26 participants with no COVID-19 history or who recovered from acute COVID-19 without PASC into a neuroimaging study to profile the cerebral connectome starting from 1/1/2021-12/31/2024. Standard Model Imaging in the Brain and Spinal Cord of MS Patients: Initial Assessment and Comparison to Diffusion Tensor Imaging.

Multiple sclerosis (MS) pathology manifests across the central nervous system (CNS), yet magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) studies frequently assess the brain and spinal cord (SC) in isolation. It remains unclear whether microstructural injury in normal-appearing white matter (NAWM) and lesions manifests identically across these distinct anatomical environments or if advanced biophysical models offer diagnostic advantages over standard diffusion techniques. We performed a comprehensive 3T MRI protocol with same-session brain and cervical SC imaging on 34 persons with relapsing-remitting MS (pwR

Investigating the association between the GAP-43 concentration with diffusion tensor imaging indices in Alzheimer's dementia continuum.

BACKGROUND: Synaptic degeneration, axonal injury, and white matter disintegration are among the pathological events in Alzheimer's disease (AD), for which growth-associated protein 43 (GAP-43) and diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) could be an indicator. In this study, the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) GAP-43 clinical trajectories and their association with progression and AD hallmarks with white matter microstructural changes were evaluated. METHODS: A total number of 133 participants were enrolled in GAP-43 and DTI values were compared between groups, both cross-sectionally and longitudinally with

Peculiar axonal debris with subsequent astrocytic response (foamy spheroid body). A topographic, light microscopic, immunohistochemical and electron microscopic study.

Foamy spheroid bodies (FSBs) are described, as newly identified pathological structures occurring in human brain. FSBs favoured the substantia nigra pars reticulata (SNPR) and/or globus pallidus (GP) in degenerative conditions especially postencephalitic parkinsonism, progressive supranuclear palsy, pallido-nigro-luysial atrophy and multiple system atrophy. No FSBs were observed anywhere in the presence of substantia nigra pars compacta (SNPC) degeneration, such as occurs in idiopathic Parkinson's disease, or luysio-pallidal system degeneration, such as found in dentato-rubro-pallido-luysial a

Neurofilament light chain is increased in the parahippocampal cortex and associates with pathological hallmarks in Parkinson's disease dementia.

BACKGROUND: Increased neurofilament levels in biofluids are commonly used as a proxy for neurodegeneration in several neurodegenerative disorders. In this study, we aimed to investigate the distribution of neurofilaments in the cerebral cortex of Parkinson's disease (PD), PD with dementia (PDD) and dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB) donors, and its association with pathology load and MRI measures of atrophy and diffusivity. METHODS: Using a within-subject post-mortem MRI-pathology approach, we included 9 PD, 12 PDD/DLB and 18 age-matched control donors. Cortical thickness and mean diffusivity (M

Oculomotor and Cognitive Correlates of White Matter Organization in Military Personnel with Chronic Mild, Moderate, and Severe Traumatic Brain Injury.

INTRODUCTION: Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) often involves diffuse axonal injury that is difficult to detect with clinical neuroimaging and may not be fully captured by standard cognitive tests. This study investigated the link between white matter microstructure, assessed by Diffusion Tensor Imaging (DTI), and performance on a multimodal neurocognitive eye tracking assessment. METHODS: Participants included n = 60 active duty military personnel, including n = 23 with chronic mild TBI (mTBI), n = 16 with chronic moderate-to-severe TBI (msTBI), and n = 21 TBI-negative controls. Appropriate incorporation of susceptibility-weighted magnetic resonance imaging into routine imaging protocols for accurate diagnosis of traumatic brain injuries: a systematic review.

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) results from physical or traumatic injuries to the brain's surrounding bony structures and associated tissues, which can lead to various sequelae, including simple concussion, acute epidural hematoma, parenchymal contusions, subarachnoid hemorrhage, diffuse axonal injury, and chronic traumatic encephalopathy. Susceptibility-weighted imaging (SWI) has enhanced the accuracy of neuroimaging for these injuries. SWI is based on 3D gradient echo magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) with long echo times and flow compensation. Owing to its sensitivity to deoxyhemoglobin, hemos…

The shaken baby syndrome. A clinical, pathological, and biomechanical study.

Because a history of shaking is often lacking in the so-called "shaken baby syndrome," diagnosis is usually based on a constellation of clin … n primates scaled for the same brain mass, while impacts spanned concussion, subdural hematoma, and diffuse axonal injury ranges. It was concluded that severe head injuries commonly diagnosed as shaking injuries require impact to occur and that shaking alone in an otherwise normal baby is unlikely to cause the shaken baby syndrome.
