BACKGROUND: This study was designed to describe the precise anatomic venous tributaries of the superior mesenteric vein with special emphasis on the superior right colic vein (SRCV), which is seldom mentioned in the literature.
METHODS: Nine adult cadavers were dissected to define the venous tributaries of the superior mesenteric vein. The SRCV, middle colic vein, and right colic vein (RCV) were defined as those that drained from the marginal vein of the right flexure of the colon, the transverse colon, and the ascending colon, respectively.
RESULTS: The SRCV was observed to drain from the r

PATIENTS, METHODS AND RESULTS: Forty-nine patients with a mean age of 25 months underwent a longitudinal intestinal lengthening procedure for short bowel syndrome (SBS) in our institution. Indications for the operation were dependence on parenteral nutrition in spite of adequate conservative management. The small bowel was lengthened from a mean of 27 cm to a mean of 51 cm. There was no intraoperative mortality. The following early complications occurred in our early series: ischemia of a short bowel segment of 2 cm, requiring resection in two patients, insufficiency of the longitudinal anasto

The effect of a laparoscopic approach and pyloric surgery on canine gastrointestinal activity, particularly gastric emptying time, is not well understood. The purpose of this study was to compare the effect of laparoscopic and conventional pyloric surgery, in Ramstedt pyloromyotomy and Heineke-Mikulicz pyloroplasty, on complete gastric emptying time in 20 clinically normal dogs. Dogs were divided into four groups of five animals: dogs with laparoscopic Ramstedt pyloromyotomy, conventional Ramstedt pyloromyotomy, or laparoscopic Heineke-Mikulicz pyloroplasty, and the conventional Heineke-Mikuli

BACKGROUND: Congenital midgut malrotation is rarely encountered outside the pediatric population. The Ladd's procedure is the standard corrective measure for intestinal malrotation in children and consists of division of peritoneal bands (Ladd's bands) traversing the posterior abdomen, reduction of volvulus, appendectomy, and functional postioning of the intestine with or without fixation. Clinical manifestations of malrotation and results of Ladd's procedure have been described in adults, but laparoscopic treatment remains to be established as adequate treatment.
METHODS: Records were review

Giant condyloma acuminatum of the anorectum (Buschke-Lowenstein tumour) is a rare interesting infectious disease caused by the papillomavirus serotypes 16 and 18. In January 2002 a 47-year-old heterosexual male presented with Buschke-Lowenstein tumour and reported having had the disease for 12 years. The patient underwent thorough screening for sexually-transmitted diseases (which proved negative), abdominal CT, transanal US-endoscopy, inguinal ultrasound, chest X-ray and anorectal manometry, which revealed only localized disease. He was treated conservatively with radical local excision of th

The authors' approach to the overall surgical management of chronic pancreatitis is to treat complications, that is, pain and, less commonly, obstruction and bleeding. The authors' practice is to exhaust nearly all forms of nonsurgical intervention before suggesting a surgical approach. Nonresponders are then evaluated for severity of pain, interference of quality of life, and presence of chemical dependency. Appropriate candidates undergo imaging examinations to determine the primary site of disease, presence of pancreatic ductal dilatation, and associated peripancreatic complications. The su

Surgery of the female reproductive system is the most commonly indicated intra-abdominal surgery of avian patients. Surgery of the male reproductive system and avian gastrointestinal tract are less commonly indicated but are occasionally necessary. Indications for surgery of the female reproductive tract include egg-laying-related disorders, dystocia, egg binding, damage or trauma to the oviduct, oviductal torsion and volvulus, abnormal egg production, biopsy or culture of the oviduct, internal laying, egg related coelomitis, oviductal impaction, oviductal or ovarian neoplasia, ovarian cysts,

We report a 35 years old female with a profound rectosigmoidal endometriosis, who had been subjected to multiple laparoscopic procedures and open surgery due to infertility in the last five years. Main presenting symptoms were cyclic hematochezia during the menstrual periods associated to pelvic pain. Colonoscopy was inconclusive, barium enema showed a marked stenosis of the zone, appearing as an extrinsic compression. CAT scan showed a homogeneous, solid parauterine mass. During surgery, an inflammatory mass with multiple endometriotic foci was found. A low anterior resection with mechanical
