A case of segmental dilatation of the ileum with an associated Meckel's diverticulum is reported in an 8-year-old child with anaemia. The pre-operative demonstration of this association has not previously been described in the literature.

Patients with incurable carcinoma of the esophagus or the cardia have a miserable life, without being able to swallow and with a risk for pulmonary complications secondary to aspiration of secretion from the esophagus. All efforts should be made to give these patients relief from dysphagia. Our experience indicates that the quality of life may be dramatically improved after dilatation or intubation which restores the ability to swallow, thereby reducing the risk for pulmonary complications.

Plasma gastrin immunoreactivity was measured by radioimmunoassay in 45 dogs with acute gastric dilatation-volvulus (GDV). Significant increases (P less than 0.05) were found in dogs with acute GDV and in the fasted state after surgical treatment and recovery. The data suggested that dogs that have had GDV may have preexisting high plasma gastrin immunoreactivity. In dogs with acute GDV, plasma gastrin immunoreactivity was not found to be helpful in formulating prognosis. Circumcostal gastropexy did not affect plasma gastrin immunoreactivity.

Endometrial aspiration cytology has been shown by multicentre prospective studies to be an acceptable and valuable method of assessing the endometrium. A retrospective study was undertaken over three years' routine use of the Isaacs cell sampler. In 86% of the cases suitable endometrium was obtained, with experience of the technique being the important factor. When compared with histological findings, all 11 cases of malignancy were confirmed, including one ovarian adenocarcinoma. Although the primary goal of cervical cone biopsy is treatment of cervical intraepithelial neoplasia, conization plus uterine dilatation and curettage is usually considered as a single, standard procedure. We reviewed 128 cone biopsies (114 of these procedures included dilatation and curettage) over a 3-year period to see whether dilatation and curettage was necessary as an accompaniment to conization. Twenty-nine patients showed localized dilatation of the intrahepatic bile ducts on computed tomography, usually unaccompanied by jaundice. Two women, aged 19 and 28 yr, who had been on the contraceptive pill for at least 18 mo, developed abnormal levels of circulating liver enzymes, minimal hepatomegaly, and elevated erythrocyte sedimentation rate. Liver biopsy in both women showed a sinusoidal dilatation sparing the perihepatic venous regions. The liver function abnormality resolved on stopping the pill. Both patients also had clinically mild inflammatory bowel disease. The possibility of both liver and bowel abnormalities being effects of contraceptive steroids is discussed.

Because segmental dilatation of the colon causes severe constipation, it has to be included in the differential diagnosis of every constipated child. A case of segmental dilatation of the colon involving the rectosigmoid area is presented. The differential diagnosis and the treatment of this rare entity are discussed.
