Visuospatial memory encoding deficits have been reported in adults with schizophrenia, while adolescents with schizophrenia have not been specifically investigated with visuospatial memory encoding and retrieval paradigms. A cross sectional study of delayed matching-to-sample performance in 19 right handed, male, anti-psychotic medication naïve adolescents with undifferentiated schizophrenia and 28 age, gender, IQ and handedness matched healthy participants was completed. The adolescent-onset schizophrenia group demonstrated significant impairment in visuospatial memory, independent of the deg

BACKGROUND: Patients with schizophrenia exhibit facial information processing deficits that likely contribute to their social dysfunction. Whether the deficits involve facial affect and/or identity processing or result from other cognitive abnormalities in schizophrenia remains controversial, and a brain dysfunction specifically related to them has never been reported. If such dysfunction existed, it should be consistently observed across groups of patients and during performance of different facial information processing tasks, independently of whether such tasks demand working memory (WM), s

Ephedrine is a sympathomimetic drug that is currently found in many over-the-counter preparations. This compound exists as four isomers which, in addition to a racemic mixture, were evaluated for their positive reinforcing effects and for their similarity to (+)-amphetamine as a discriminative stimulus. Rhesus monkeys (N=3) with intravenous cocaine (0.1 mg/kg/inj) or saline as a consequence for lever pressing were shown to self-administer all of the ephedrine compounds (range tested: 0.03-3.0 mg/kg/inj), with the exception of (-)-pseudoephedrine, when each drug/dose was substituted for cocaine

Male Long-Evans rats were trained on five separate object discrimination problems at different times prior to surgery. Following surgery, retrograde amnesia was assessed by measuring retention of the preoperatively learned discrimination problems in lesioned rats and controls. Rats with rhinal cortex lesions displayed temporally graded retrograde amnesia; retention of object discriminations acquired in the recent past (i.e. 2 or 9 days prior to surgery) was significantly impaired, whereas retention of object discriminations acquired more remotely (i.e. 16, 37, or 58 days prior to surgery) was

Rats were trained to discriminate the stimulus properties of the benzodiazepine receptor partial inverse agonist beta-carboline-3-carboxylate acid methyl amide (FG 7142) (5.0 mg/kg) or the alpha 2-adrenergic receptor antagonist 17 alpha-hydroxyyohimban-16 alpha-carboxylic acid methyl ester (yohimbine) (3.0 mg/kg) from vehicle in a two-lever, food-motivated operant task. These compounds have in common a beta-carboline structure and anxiogenic behavioral profiles. The yohimbine discriminative stimulus was mimicked by the alpha 2-adrenergic receptor antagonist idazoxan and antagonized by the alph

Ensemble perception refers to the ability to extract summary statistics (e.g., mean, variance) from groups of similar objects. In some ensemble perception tasks, participants must select specific items from a set before calculating a summary statistic (e.g., the average size of red circles among blue ones). It is generally assumed that this selection process does not alter the ability being measured. However, research in working memory suggests that introducing selection into tasks can shift the focus of what is measured-from working memory capacity to attention control. In this study, we exam

The origin of category effects in visual working memory (VWM) - whether they stem from perceptual factors - remains debated. The present study adopted an individual-differences approach to investigate how the magnitude of category effects relates to perceptual versus memory factors, as indexed by discrimination thresholds. Eighty participants completed two threshold tasks: one perceptual color discrimination task where two color patches were presented simultaneously, and one memory color discrimination task where patches were presented sequentially. They also performed a delayed estimation tas

Cortical areas involved in self-motion perception process cues from multiple sensory modalities, primarily visual and vestibular, alongside choice-related activity. Neurons in these regions often respond to combinations of these factors-demonstrating a high degree of mixed selectivity. Moreover, self-motion is inherently dynamic, with each cue-visual and vestibular-comprising a mix of distinct motion signals, such as velocity and acceleration, that evolve over time. Here, we developed a time-varying targeted dimensionality reduction method to expose these dynamic motion and choice-related sign

Being able to detect changes in our visual environment reliably and quickly is important for many daily tasks. The motion silencing effect describes a decrease in the ability to detect feature changes for faster moving objects compared with stationary or slowly moving objects. One theory is that spatiotemporal receptive field properties in early vision might account for the silencing effect, suggesting that its origins are low-level visual processing. Here, we explore whether spatial attention can modulate motion silencing of orientation changes to gain greater understanding of the underlying

INTRODUCTION: Interoceptive stimuli elicited by drug administration acquire conditioned modulatory properties of the induction of conditioned appetitive behaviours by exteroceptive cues. This effect may be modeled using a drug discrimination task in which the drug stimulus is trained as a positive-feature (FP) occasion setter (OS) that disambiguates the relation between an exteroceptive light conditioned stimulus (CS) and a sucrose unconditioned stimulus (US). We previously reported that females are less sensitive to generalization of a FP morphine OS than males, so we investigated the role of

It is controversial whether covariation between neuronal activity and perceptual choice (i.e., choice correlation) reflects the functional readout of sensory signals. Here, we combined choice-correlation measures and electrical microstimulation on a site-to-site basis in the medial superior temporal area (MST), middle temporal area (MT), and ventral intraparietal area (VIP) when macaques discriminated between motion directions in both fine and coarse tasks. Microstimulation generated comparable effects between tasks but heterogeneous effects across and within brain regions. Within the MST and

Both cognitive and motor symptoms in people with Parkinson's disease (PD) arise from either too little or too much dopamine (DA). Akinesia stems from DA neuronal cell loss, and dyskinesia often stems from an overdose of DA medication. Cognitive behaviors typically associated with frontal cortical function, such as working memory and task switching, are also affected by too little or too much DA in PD. Whether motor and cognitive circuits overlap in PD is unknown. In this article, we show that whereas motor performance improves in people with PD when on dopaminergic medication compared with off

A previous functional magnetic resonance imaging study elucidated the specific activity of the inferior parietal lobe (IPL) during a two-point discrimination task compared with that during an intensity discrimination task Akatsuka et al. (Neuroimage 40: 852-858, 2008). If the posterior parietal cortex (PPC), including IPL, is responsible for detecting changes in stimulus sites, PPC activity depends on the level of change at stimulus sites. The aim of this study was to clarify whether a particular site exists that could detect changes in stimulus sites using the oddball paradigm. Somatosensory-

Infections have been shown to alter body odor. Because immune activation accompanies both infection and immunization, we tested the hypothesis that classical immunization might similarly result in the alteration of body odors detectable by trained biosensor mice. Using a Y-maze, we trained biosensor mice to distinguish between urine odors from rabies-vaccinated (RV) and unvaccinated control mice. RV-trained mice generalized this training to mice immunized with the equine West Nile virus (WNV) vaccine compared with urine of corresponding controls. These results suggest that there are similariti

We investigate whether the loss of one eye leads to enhanced multisensory processing. Previously, we measured discrimination of auditory, visual and audiovisual targets in people with one eye compared to controls viewing binocularly or with one eye patched. Both control groups demonstrated typical visual dominance (the Colavita effect) whereas people with one eye show no Colavita effect, and instead show equal preference for visual and auditory stimuli. Here, we loaded temporal processing in an attempt to favour audition and thereby reverse Colavita visual dominance with a modified repetition

Controversy still exists over whether there is a magnocellular deficit associated with developmental dyslexia. Here we utilised a magnocellular system-biased phantom contour form discrimination task defined by high temporal frequency contrast reversals to compare contrast sensitivity in a group of children with dyslexia and an age- and nonverbal intelligence-matched control group (9-14 years). Stimuli were either abruptly presented for 4 refresh frames (34 ms), or in two reduced transience conditions had contrast progressively ramped on and off over either 4 frames or 10 frames (86 ms). Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) over the occipital pole can produce an illusory percept of a light flash (or 'phosphene'), suggesting an excitatory effect. Whereas previous reported effects produced by single-pulse occipital pole TMS are typically disruptive, here we report the first demonstration of a location-specific facilitatory effect on visual perception in humans. Observers performed a spatial cueing orientation discrimination task. An orientation target was presented in one of two peripheral placeholders. A single pulse below the phosphene threshold applied to the occipital pol

Induced motion is the false impression that physically stationary objects move when in the presence of other objects that really move. In this study, we investigated this motion illusion in the depth dimension. We raised three related questions, as follows: (1) What cues in the stimulus are responsible for this motion illusion in depth? (2) Is the size of this illusion affected by vergence eye movements? And (3) are the effects of eye movements different for motion in depth and for motion in the frontoparallel plane? To answer these questions, we measured the point of subjective stationarity.

In two studies, the authors examined the circumstances under which discrimination has an identity confirmation function or an instrumental function (instigating collective action). In Study 1, participants (N = 601) described a situation in which they had discriminated and then completed measures of functionality, group identification, and group threat. Both functions were predicted by group identification, whereas the instrumental function (but not identity confirmation) operated under group threat. In Study 2, "die-hard" soccer fans (N = 1,546) suggested soccer chants in reaction to either a
