Using a new disposable polymer sensor, tissue pH was continuously monitored successfully in 33 critically ill neonates. Tissue pH correlated well with the arterial pH at wide pH ranges [n = 476; r = .84; y = 0.46 + (0.94)x]. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to analyze the direct economic impact of two vaginal cuff brachytherapy (VBT) schedules in postoperative endometrial carcinoma (PEC) with similar vaginal control and toxicity results.

External fixation is a temporizing measure that has a long history in the treatment of fractures. Thirty-eight newly designed large-frame external fixators were applied for acute lower-limb fractures and pelvis injuries in a level I trauma center. In 75% of cases, the frames were used for first-stage skeletal stabilization, followed by revision to plates or nails 1 to 2 weeks later. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate clinical performance of three lens types disposed of on a daily disposable (DD) basis.
METHOD: A total of 120 participants were randomized into one of three lens types (etafilcon A, narafilcon A, and senofilcon A), all worn bilaterally on a DD regime. Participants were observed at baseline, 2-week, and 1- and 3-month visits where ocular physiology and lens performance variables were collected on a 0 to 4 grading scale in 0.1 increments. Three geo-textile filtration tubes were used to dewater lagoon solids from a first stage dairy lagoon using chemical amendments (aluminum sulfate and a polymer) to enhance the separation process. PURPOSE: To report a case of Acanthamoeba keratitis that occurred in a daily disposable contact lens wearer.
METHOD: Case report.
RESULTS: A 70-year-old gentleman presented to eye casualty with a red left eye with reduced vision and corneal epithelial changes. Acanthamoeba keratitis was not suspected initially as he was a daily disposable contact lens wearer. This led to a delay of 17 days in initiating treatment. He responded well to topical polyhexamethylene biguanide and propamidine and made a full recovery.

The wearing of contact lenses is not without some risk. When prescribing contact lenses, several decisions must be made regarding the type of lens; for example, daily wear vs. extended wear and disposable or frequent replacement lenses vs. non-disposable or traditional (reusable) lenses. We report nine cases of corneal infiltrates and/or ulceration in patients using disposable extended wear contact lenses. None of the nine patients had worn the lenses more than the recommended 7 days. Cultures were performed on six of the patients; all cultures were negative. One of the six cultured patients had been treated with topical antibiotics prior to culture. All responded promptly to cessation of lens wear and topical antibiotic therapy. Although all of the infiltrates/ulcers were paracentral, none of the patients sustained any permanent visual loss.
