Southern elephant seals (SES) experience a 'catastrophic molt', a costly event characterized by the renewal of both hair and epidermis that requires high peripheral vascular circulation. Molting animals are therefore constrained by high metabolic heat loss and are thought to fast and remain on land. To examine the ability of individuals to balance the energetic constraints of molting on land we investigate the stomach temperature and movement patterns of molting female SES. We find that 79% of females swam and 61% ingested water or prey items, despite the cost of cold-water exposure while molt

Aquifer karstic structures, due to their complex nature, present significant challenges in accurately mapping their intricate features. Traditional methods often rely on invasive techniques or sophisticated equipment, limiting accessibility and feasibility. In this paper, a new approach is proposed for a non-invasive, low-cost 3D reconstruction using a camera that observes the light projection of a simple diving lamp. The method capitalizes on the principles of structured light, leveraging the projection of light contours onto the karstic surfaces. By capturing the resultant light patterns wit…

This review examines the relationship between the physiological demands of diving and premature ventricular complexes (PVCs) in divers. In the general population, some individuals have a greater tendency to experience PVCs, often without awareness or a clear understanding of the triggering factors. With the increasing availability and popularity of both scuba and apnoea diving, more people, including those with a predisposition to PVCs, are engaging in these activities. The underwater environment, with its unique stressors, may increase the risk of arrhythmogenic events, particularly PVCs. Her…

Behavior is fundamental to neuroscience research, providing insights into the mechanisms underlying thoughts, actions and responses. Various model organisms, including mice, flies, and fish, are employed to understand these mechanisms. Zebrafish, in particular, serve as a valuable model for studying anxiety-like behavior, typically measured through the novel tank diving (NTD) assay. Traditional methods for analyzing NTD assays are either manually intensive or costly when using specialized software. To address these limitations, it is useful to develop methods for the automated analysis of zebr…

Chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) is a B cell neoplasm characterized by the accumulation of aberrant monoclonal B lymphocytes. CLL is the predominant type of leukemia in Western countries, accounting for 25% of cases. Although many patients remain asymptomatic, a subset may exhibit typical lymphoma symptoms, acquired immunodeficiency disorders, or autoimmune complications. Diagnosis involves blood tests showing increased lymphocytes and further examination using peripheral blood smear and flow cytometry to confirm the disease. With the significant advancements in machine learning (ML) and art

Diving bradycardia is a reduction in the heart rate mediated by the parasympathetic system during diving. Although diving bradycardia is pronounced in aquatic mammals and birds, the existence of this response in aquatic reptiles, including sea turtles, remains under debate. Using the parasympathetic blocker atropine, we evaluated the involvement of the parasympathetic nervous system in heart rate reduction of loggerhead sea turtles (Caretta caretta) during voluntary diving in tanks. The heart rate of the control group dropped by 40-60% from the pre-dive value at the onset of diving; however, a…

We examined if the diving-induced vascular changes in the peripheral and cerebral circulation could be prevented by oral antioxidant supplementation. Fourteen divers performed a single scuba dive to eighteen meter sea water for 47 min. Twelve of the divers participated in a follow-up study involving breathing 60% of oxygen at ambient pressure for 47 min. Before both studies, participants ingested vitamin C (2 g/day) or a placebo capsule for 6 days. After a 2-wk washout, the study was repeated with the different condition. Endothelium-dependent vasodilator function of the brachial artery was as…

Scuba diving is a popular recreational and professional activity with inherent risks. Complications related to barotrauma and decompression illness can pose significant morbidity to a diver's hearing and balance systems. The majority of dive-related injuries affect the head and neck, particularly the outer, middle and inner ear. Given the high incidence of otologic complications from diving, an evidence-based approach to the diagnosis and treatment of otic pathology is a necessity. We performed a systematic and comprehensive literature review including the pathophysiology, diagnosis, and treat…

Scuba diving is an increasingly common recreational activity. We describe the physiopathology of barotrauma in two cases where death was caused by pulmonary barotrauma while diving. An inspection and autopsy were carried out in both cases. The autopsy data were supported by post-mortem radiological investigation. Histological and toxicological analyses were also carried out, and dive computer and tank manometer analysis performed. In both cases, the cause of death was attributable to arterial gas embolism, resulting from pulmonary barotrauma subsequent to pulmonary over-distension. The dive co…

The differences in physical properties of air and water pose unique behavioural and physiological demands on semiaquatic animals. The aim of this study was to describe the diving behaviour of the freshwater crocodile Crocodylus johnstoni in the wild and to assess the relationships between diving, body temperature, and heart rate. Time-depth recorders, temperature-sensitive radio transmitters, and heart rate transmitters were deployed on each of six C. johnstoni (4.0-26.5 kg), and data were obtained from five animals. Crocodiles showed the greatest diving activity in the morning (0600-1200 hour…

A series of undersea experiments were undertaken at the Japan Marine Science and Technology Center since 1972 in order to investigate thermal drain due to higher heat conductivity of helium which is essential as a breathing medium in deep-sea diving substituting for nitrogen in the air. While the less narcotic effect and the low density of the gas is adequate for maintaining better respiratory functions of divers, distortion of the diver's voice due to low density and thermal drain should be overcome. Measuring body heat loss in a hyperbaric dry environment, wet pot thermistors and heat flux t…
