Ten persons who had eaten at a seafood meal in North Carolina had gastrointestinal and neurologic symptoms suggestive of ciguatera fish poisoning. In five persons, the neurologic morbidity lasted 30 days or longer. The meal included barracuda, dolphin fish (mahimahi), and yellow-fin tuna, all of which were caught in North Carolina coastal waters. Analysis of food-specific attack rates implicated the barracuda as the probable cause of the outbreak. AIM: To find the correlation between nasal airway volume and the craniofacial morphology using cone beam computed tomography (CBCT).
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study consisted of preorthodontic anonymized CBCT scans of 34 healthy adults in the age span of 18-28 years. Methylmercury (MeHg), inorganic mercury (Hginorg) and their biomagnification factors (BMF) were evaluated along a non-degraded Brazilian bay food web. Highly significant differences (p < 0.0001) were found between MeHg and Hginorg concentrations among all organisms (microplankton, shrimp, fish and dolphin).
