We reported here a patient of moyamoya-like disease with repetitive limb-shaking TIAs on drinking. Regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) was quantified with and without drinking by single photon emission computed tomography with intravenously injected N-isopropyl-p-(I-123) iodoamphetamine (IMP). RCBF was reduced by alcohol ingestion. We speculated that homodynamic TIAs might be caused by impaired autoregulation in the region of the left carotid artery.

The major effects of maternal alcohol use during pregnancy are decreased fetal growth, morphologic abnormalities, and CNS impairment. If all three of these are present, with a characteristic facies in the infant, fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS) is diagnosed. FAS occurs only with heavy or alcoholic drinking. The individual components of the syndrome exhibit a dose-response association with ethanol intake in many, but not all studies. Dichloroacetonitrile (DCAN), a by-product of drinking water disinfection formed by reaction of chlorine with background organic materials, was evaluated for its developmental effects in pregnant Long-Evans rats. Ingestion of water leads to a rapid fall in plasma levels of vasopressin in 24-h water-deprived dogs. The rapid inhibition of vasopressin secretion is not due to absorption of water and dilution of plasma nor is it due to gastric distension. Epidemiologic and experimental studies of the consequences of maternal drinking during pregnancy confirm reports that alcohol in high doses is teratogenic.
