A preliminary study on estimation of postmortem submersion interval of rat cadavers in freshwater through polyamine analysis in tissues.

The estimation of postmortem submersion interval (PMSI) has always been an important scientific issue to be addressed in drowning cases. Traditional methods, such as corpse temperature analysis and the assessment of corpse surface corruption, have limitations and cannot meet the need for accurate estimation of the time of death in the mid to late stages. Biogenic amines, as small molecules produced by protein degradation after death, have a certain regularity in relation to PMSI. To further explore the possibility of utilizing polyamines to estimate PMSI, this experiment constructed a rat cada…

Deaths associated with wheelchairs.

As lethal events associated with wheelchair use are poorly reported in the literature, a search was undertaken of the Forensic Science South Australia (FSSA), Australia, autopsy database over a 20-year period for all cases where individuals who were wheelchair bound were found dead either in or beside their chairs. There were 16 cases, ranging in age from 30 to 92 years (M = 58.6 years) and with a male-to-female ratio of 9:7. There were six accidents that involved burns, asphyxia, a fall and impact with a vehicle; three suicides that involved drowning and asphyxia; a single homicide involving …

Patterns of injury mortality among Athabascan Indians in interior Alaska 1977-1987.

It was found that almost one-half of all Interior Alaska rural fatalities from thirty-six villages are due to unintentional and intentional injury. Drowning, motor vehicle crashes, hypothermia, fire, carbon monoxide poisoning and air transport crashes accounted for over 32% of all deaths; suicide and homicide account for over 15%. Many of these deaths are preventable.

Diatoms pass through the gastrointestinal barrier and lead to false-positive: an animal experiment.

The diatom test has been used by forensic pathologist as standard for drowning, but the occurrence of false-positive results (presence of diatoms found in the tissues of subjects who died from causes other than drowning) draws criticism regarding the specificity of the test. Diatoms within food or water can be ingested through the gastrointestinal tract. However, the mechanisms of how the diatoms reach distant organs such as the lung, liver, and kidney have not been studied. In this article, we simulated the process of diatoms entering the gastrointestinal tract using gastric lavage on experim…

Scuba diving fatalities in Australia 2001 to 2013: Chain of events.

INTRODUCTION: We aimed to identify the possible chain of events leading to fatal scuba diving incidents in Australia from 2001-2013 to inform appropriate countermeasures. METHODS: The National Coronial Information System was searched to identify scuba diving-related deaths from 2001-2013, inclusive. Coronial findings, witness and police reports, medical histories and autopsies, toxicology and equipment reports were scrutinised. These were analysed for predisposing factors, triggers, disabling agents, disabling injuries and causes of death using a validated template. RESULTS: There were 126 k

[Typical pathology during the free immersion of a man under water].

The free immersion of a man under the water is accompanied by the threat of specific disorders which could cause the drowning. The article examines the causes, conditions and mechanisms of two most frequent pathological states, i.e. the compression of thorax and loss consciousness caused by CO2 action and hypoxia. The symptoms of these states, as well as prophylactic measures and first aid recommendations are enclosed.

The Flood-Related Behaviour of River Users in Australia.

INTRODUCTION: Flooding is a common natural disaster affecting 77.8 million people and claiming the lives of 4,731 people globally in 2016. During times of flood, drowning is a leading cause of death. Flooding is a known risk factor for river drowning in Australia. With little known about river usage in Australia, this study aimed to examine the links between person demographics and self-reported participation in two flood-related behaviours, driving through floodwaters and swimming in a flooded river. METHODS: A self-reported questionnaire was administered to adult river users at four high-ri…

[Gastric death as first described by Sehrt ("Sehrt'scher Magentod")--a review of the literature].

The gastric death (Sehrt) is a rare form of death in the water with heterogeneous etiology. According to the first description, the pathogeneic mechanisms can be divided into two groups: asphyxiation after aspiration of vomited gastric contents and drowning due to hyperemia during digestion. In this paper, the authors discuss the different views on the causes of gastric death and evaluate relevant post-mortem findings.

Lifejackets or just jackets? Seaworthiness of lifejackets sold at landing sites of Lake Albert, Uganda.

Objectives. Upon immersion in water, a cascade of human physiological responses is evoked, which may result in drowning death. Although lifejackets are over 80% effective in preventing drowning, many people in lakeside fishing communities in Uganda shy away from wearing them because of active distrust in the quality of the lifejackets on the local market. No study has determined the veracity of these claims. This study determined the seaworthiness of lifejackets sold at landing sites of Lake Albert, Uganda. Methods. Using a within-person repeated assessment design, we tested 22 new lifejacket …

Environmental Deaths in the Northern Territory of Australia, 2003-2018.

INTRODUCTION: The Northern Territory is sparsely populated with a distinctive climate, geography, and wildlife compared with other states and territories in Australia. Environmental deaths (including drowning, heat-related deaths or environmental exposure, fatal animal attacks or envenomation, and lightning deaths) are reportable to the Northern Territory coroner for further investigation. METHODS: Databases of the Northern Territory coroner's office and the Royal Darwin Hospital Forensic Pathology Unit were searched to identify all environmental deaths over a 15-y period (July 1, 2003-June 3…

Evaluation of postmortem S100B levels in the cerebrospinal fluid with regard to the cause of death in medicolegal autopsy.

Previous studies have suggested the usefulness of the postmortem serum S100B level as a marker of the severity of brain damage. In this study, we investigated the S100B level in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) in serial autopsy cases (n=216, within 3 days postmortem), including those of blunt injury (n=34: fatal head injury, n=20; others, n=14), sharp instrument injury (n=9), mechanical asphyxiation (n=19), drowning (n=11), fire fatality (n=26), intoxication (n=20), hypothermia (cold exposure, n=16), hyperthermia (heat stroke, n=9), acute cardiac death (n=52) and pneumonia (n=20). The CSF S100B …

Common causes of open-circuit recreational diving fatalities.

Diving fatalities causes were investigated in 947 recreational open-circuit scuba diving deaths from 1992-2003. Where possible, cases were classified at each step of a four step sequence: trigger, disabling agent, disabling injury, cause of death (COD). The most frequent adverse events within each step were: (a) triggers 41% insufficient gas, 20% entrapment, 15% equipment problems; (b) disabling agents--55% emergency ascent, 27% insufficient gas, 13% buoyancy trouble; (c) disabling injuries--33% asphyxia, 29% arterial gas embolism (AGE), 26% cardiac incidents; and (d) COD--70% drowning, 14% AG…
