This paper reviews recent developments in the liquid chromatographic (LC) methods of analysis for the residues of antibiotics (aminoglycosides, chloramphenicol, sulfonamides, tetracyclines, macrolides, beta-lactams, etc.) in food products of animal origin. The review also covers clean-up procedures, such as, ultrafiltration, liquid-liquid partition, solid-phase extraction, immunoaffinity, and matrix solid-phase dispersion, for use as extraction, deproteination, and concentration steps. Two HPLC systems have been developed for the investigation of flumecinol (3-trifluoromethyl-alpha-ethyl-benzhydrol). The reversed-phase system (LiChrosorb RP-18; methanol-water, 7:3, v/v) enables the isolation and identification of the impurities. The chiral system (Chiralcel OD; hexane-2-propanol, 98:2, v/v) separates the enantiomers of flumecinol and its impurities. The potential of spectral convolution in peak identification in HPLC impurity profiling is demonstrated by an example involving the identification of the 4'-methyl-analogue of flumecinol.

We describe two cases of fatal methemoglobinemia resulting from ingestion of laxative solution inadvertently contaminated with sodium nitrite. Postmortem toxicological examination revealed methemoglobin levels in excess of 75% in both patients--a level that is uniformly fatal. The laxative solution was found to contain sodium nitrite instead of sodium sulphate at a concentration of 15 g/l. Twenty samples of 2% hydroxypropylmethylcellulose for intraocular surgery, obtained from two Brazilian laboratories, were studied to determine the presence and type of impurities in the solutions. These were compared with ten samples of balanced salt solution (control group). Microorganisms commonly attach to living and nonliving surfaces, including those of indwelling medical devices, and form biofilms made up of extracellular polymers. In this state, microorganisms are highly resistant to antimicrobial treatment and are tenaciously bound to the surface. To better understand and control biofilms on indwelling medical devices, researchers should develop reliable sampling and measurement techniques, investigate the role of biofilms in antimicrobial drug resistance, and establish the link between biofilm contamination and patient infection.

Hazardous drugs (HD), which need to be handled with care, may be administered through a feeding tube using the simple suspension method. However, instrument contamination during HD administration with the simple suspension method remains unclear. Therefore, to minimize such contamination during the simple suspension method using an injector, we propose the following exposure countermeasures method: (1) Wear two layers of gloves.
