We present a case of incomplete duodenal obstruction having a delayed presentation, making diagnosis and early intervention more challenging. Failure of recanalization of the duodenal lumen during the eighth to tenth week of gestation, results in duodenal atresia. Incomplete recanalization can lead to duodenal stenosis or the presence of a duodenal web. In the absence of other serious anomalies or prematurity, the overall survival for duodenal stenosis or atresia is nearly 100%.

BACKGROUND: We present, here, the technique and results of our laparoscopic simple "one-stitch" suture with omental patch technique for treating 35 patients with perforated duodenal ulcer.
METHODS: The laparoscopic treatment included peritoneal lavage, suture of the perforation without knotting, and then tying the suture over the omentum. Follow-up gastroscopy was performed after an eight-week course of medication with proton-pump inhibitors.

Medical records and endoscopy images were examined for 209 horses that had gastroscopic examinations performed with a 2.5- or 3-m-long endoscope by one of the authors (MJM) during a 4-year period (1996-2000). The antrum and pylorus were viewed in 162 horses, and the duodenum was viewed in 94 horses. "Sump syndrome" is a rare complication of side-to-side choledochoenterostomy operations which develops in the distal, nonfunctioning limb of the common bile duct where lithogenic bile, gastrointestinal contents, and debris accumulate. We report here a patient who developed spontaneous sump syndrome as a result of the formation of choledochoduodenal fistula, and who presented with multiple pyogenic liver abscesses. Only those patients who were examined endoscopically were evaluated. Concomitant examinations, such as biopsy, histologic studies, roentgenograms, scintiscanning, acid secretion, serum gastrin and review of the operative reports, were done. Duodenal ulcers (1,219) and gastric ulcers (421) were examined preoperatively. Of these, selective proximal vagotomy and pyloroplasty and excision of the ulcer were performed for 1,018 duodenal ulcers. Forty-three per cent were examined postoperatively. Two preparations of acetylsalicylic acid (ASA) were tested for their effects on gastroduodenal mucosa in a randomized crossover double-blind study that involved 12 healthy volunteers. Medication M (Monobeltin) consisted of 1,050 mg ASA provided with an enteric coat and medication C (Colfarit) consisted of 1,000 mg of a microencapsulated ASA preparation. We report the case of a 24-year-old woman who presented with diarrhea, weight loss and abdominal lymph node enlargement. A diagnosis of infection by Mycobacterium avium intracellulare with a clinical picture similar to Whipple's disease was established. The endoscopic study of the duodenum revealed multiple yellow nodules that became confluent in the second portion, entirely replacing the normal mucosa. These endoscopic findings have not been described previously in intestinal infection by Mycobacterium avium intracellulare.

Multiple biopsy specimens were taken from the duodenal cap and/or from the descending part of the duodenum in patients admitted for routine upper endoscopy, to determine the degree of variation in disaccharidase activity.
