The levels and distribution of mercury (Hg) species, including total mercury (THg) and methylmercury (MeHg) in the topsoil and dust collected from twenty sampling stations located in different land function areas of Xiamen, China, were investigated. The THg concentrations in topsoil ranged from 0.071 to 1.2 mg/kg, and in dust ranged from of 0.034 to 1.4 mg/kg. BACKGROUND: Recent evidence suggests that asthma is not invariably related to atopy. The aim of this study was to evaluate the frequency of … (odds ratio 1.85). Furthermore, a significant association with asthma symptoms was found for house dust mite (HDM) in group 3 (odds ratio 4.8).
CONCLUSIONS: Asthma is related to atopy in pre-selected children only from the age of 7 years. House dust mite sensitization seems to be an important determinant of asthma in these "older" children.

BACKGROUND: Allergic diseases seem less prevalent in communities in less developed parts of the world, where parasite infections are highly prevalent. Altogether not much is known about the association between chronic infections with tissue and blood-dwelling parasites and atopy.

Dermatophytes are usually isolated from house dust by using actidione-chloramphenicol Sabouraud glucose medium (ACS medium). We have prepared a new medium, 5FC medium, by adding gentamicin sulphate (GS) and 5-fluorocytosine (5FC) to ACS medium to achieve more efficient isolation of dermatophytes from house dust. 5FC medium was more effective in isolating dermatophytes than ACS medium or ACS medium supplemented with GS alone. A case report is presented of a female worker of a tee packing factory, with a 5 years history of tea dust exposition and symptoms of reversible airway obstruction and early allergic alveolitis. The results of spirometric and lung mechanics demonstrated reversible airway obstruction with co-existent restrictive changes, lowering of CO diffusing capacity (DLc0). Sensitization to house dust mites, storage mites and other common inhalation allergens was studied in 144 farmers using SPT and RAST. The study population was selected from a random sample of 808 farmers and consisted of 47 persons who had declared themselves to suffer from asthma, 63 persons who had reported respiratory symptoms, and 34 healthy persons without respiratory symptoms.
