Thirteen patients with Ebstein anomaly and atrioventricular reentrant tachycardia and at least one accessory pathway were included in this study. One accessory pathway in 7 (53.8%) patients and multiple accessory pathways in 6 (46.1%) were found. Mahaim accessory pathway was observed in 5 (38.4%) patients. A total of 22 accessory pathways was found, 2 (9%) were concealed. In all (100%), the accessory pathways were located in the tricuspid ring. The most frequent regions were right lateral free wall with 11 (50%) and 5 right posteroseptal (22.7%). Ten patients underwent surgical radiofrequency …

Fetal and neonatal Ebstein's anomaly has a poor prognosis, and there are few contemporary reviews of management and outcomes. This study retrospectively reviewed a management algorithm promoting early ductal closure after anatomic pulmonary obstruction had been excluded or relieved in neonatal Ebstein's anomaly from 1995 to 2004. Twenty-eight patients with Ebstein's anomaly were identified, 9 prenatally (8 with hydrops) and 19 postnatally, at a median age of <24 hours. Celermajer index scores predicted a mortality rate of 35%. Prostaglandins were administered to 24 of 28 patients. Prostaglandi

BACKGROUND: Nonneonatal Ebstein's anomaly is a rare congenital anomaly for which numerous operative techniques have been described to repair the aberrant tricuspid valve, exclude the atrialized right ventricle, and address right heart dysfunction. We reviewed short-term outcomes in surgical patients treated by a simplified operative technique.
METHODS: Our operative approach to Ebstein's anomaly is approximation of the anteroposterior commissure to the remnant septal leaflet with closure of the cul-de-sac longitudinally. Plication of the atrialized right ventricle (1 patient) and a bidirectio

Exercise intolerance in Ebstein's anomaly is usually attributed to desaturation secondary to right-to-left shunting as a result of a small or distorted left ventricle (LV), significant tricuspid valve regurgitation, right ventricular dysfunction, or a combination of these. We observed one boy (age 15 years) and two women (ages 20 and 29 years) with severe Ebstein's anomaly and strikingly abnormal LV myocardium resembling the features described for LV noncompaction. LV size and systolic function were normal in the two women; the boy had a dilated LV with severely diminished ejection fraction. T

A case of asymptomatic 36 years old men with Ebstein anomaly of tricuspid valve, patent foramen ovale and paroxismal supraventricular tachycardia is presented in this paper. A routine physical examination revealed a heart systolic murmur along left and right side of sternum, with right bundle branch block on ECG. It led to the detailed non-invasive cardiologic examination (transthoracic, transeophageal and stress echocardiography, ambulatory ECG), what disclosed above mentioned Ebstein anomaly. Also he was operated on upon superior lip fissure at the first year of life. Regarding his very mild…

BACKGROUND: Repairing Ebstein's anomaly without correction of associated arrhythmia may result in sudden death. Catheter or surgical ablation is indicated for various symptomatic tachyarrhythmias in Ebstein's anomaly.
METHODS: Between October 1973 and October 1997, 30 patients with Ebstein's anomaly underwent surgical repair in our hospital. Tricuspid valve replacement was performed in 13 patients, tricuspid annuloplasty and valvuloplasty in the remaining 17 patients. Preoperative electrophysiological studies were performed in 11 patients after 1980. Concomitant arrhythmia ablation was done i

BACKGROUND: The echocardiographic criteria that have been used to evaluate severity of Ebstein's anomaly in utero are the same as those applied after birth.
OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to establish prognostic criteria that take into account the peculiarities of the fetal hemodynamics.
METHOD: The video recordings of eight fetuses with Ebstein's anomaly were retrospectively reviewed.
RESULTS: The following indexes had no prognostic significance either on fetal or neonatal outcome: the ratio of functional tricuspid opening over the diameter of the annulus, the degree of displac

Ebstein's anomaly is a complex malformation of the tricuspid valve where the hinges of the septal and/or posterior leaflets are displaced downward into the right ventricle. The leaflets show variable deformations. In general, the anterior leaflet is enlarged. For those patients who have only mild symptoms, medical management is recommended, but operative treatment is indicated if progressive deterioration is evident. The timing of the surgical intervention is still a matter of controversy, especially since the results of surgical treatment were substantially improved by further development of

Ebstein's anomaly is a rare congenital cardiac anomaly showing significant clinical manifestations with a high mortality rate in the neonatal period. The prognosis of the patient is essentially determined by the severity in morphological changes, however, high pulmonary vascular resistance in the neonatal period may aggravate tricuspid regurgitation and lead to functional pulmonary atresia. We describe a critically ill neonate with morphologically mild Ebstein's anomaly who was successfully managed with intensive care including isoproterenol administration for functional pulmonary atresia. Ebstein's anomaly of the tricuspid valve has a known association with the Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome. Radiofrequency ablation has become the treatment of choice for the latter, but there have been no reports of the feasibility of this procedure after tricuspid valve replacement. We present a patient who first exhibited evidence of intermittent preexcitation and associated symptomatic arrhythmia 9 years after tricuspid valve replacement for Ebstein's anomaly, and describe the challenges posed by this case.

There were 63 patients of Ebstein's anomaly of tricuspid valve encountered from 1976 to 1991; 28 (44.4%) were male and 35 (55.6%) female. Their age at presentation ranged from 3 months to 51 years. Five (7.9%) patients were asymptomatic, 48 (76.2%) had class II-III exertional dyspnoea, palpitation or both. Thirty patients (47.6%) had cyanosis. Electrocardiogram showed paroxysmal atrial fibrillation in two, chronic atrial fibrillation in four (6.3%), paroxysmal supraventricular tachycardia in seven, atrial or ventricular ectopic beats in five (7.9%), 2:1 atrioventricular block in one (1.6%), co

The original description of Ebstein's anomaly mentioned a mild deformity of the mitral valve. Reviews of large series of cases with Ebstein's malformation have, however, tended to omit reference to accompanying mitral valve malformations. We have compared the mitral valves in 19 specimens with Ebstein's malformation with those in 30 age-matched controls in order to determine the prevalence and nature of these anomalies. In the Ebstein's group the mitral valve was abnormal in 14 hearts with orificial anomalies in four, leaflet anomalies in 11, cord anomalies in 11 and papillary muscle anomalies

Osteogenesis imperfecta is an inherited disorder of collagen synthesis. It has a wide range of phenotypic expressions, but cardiovascular anomalies tend to be rare. When they do occur, they usually consist of aortic or mitral valve disease. We report an autopsy case of a 36-week gestation infant with coexisting osteogenesis imperfecta and Ebstein's anomaly. The simultaneous occurrence of two relatively rare entities may reflect a generalized expression of an underlying collagen synthesis defect.

Atrial septal aneurysm (ASA) is a known morphologic abnormality and has been largely investigated with two-dimensional echocardiography. Its association with other congenital or acquired diseases has also been described. However, the presence of ASA and concomitant Ebstein's anomaly in the same patient is a very unexpected finding in an adult subject. We therefore present the case of a young asymptomatic woman with this association.

The authors describe a case of a 55 years old white man with Down's syndrome in whom an Ebstein's anomaly of tricuspid valve was casually diagnosed. The peculiarity of this association was searched in the literature, trying to explain, at the same time, the poor symptomatology. The role of echocardiography in the diagnosis of Ebstein's anomaly is emphasized.

In patients with Ebstein's anomaly of the tricuspid valve, predictors of death and indications for surgery are poorly defined. We retrospectively reviewed 48 patients with Ebstein's anomaly, 17 (35%) of whom presented in the first week of life. Duration of follow-up extended to 32 years (greater than 10 years in 35%). Twenty of the 48 patients (42%) died, 6 in the first week of life and 1 at age 5 months. Thirteen of the 41 patients surviving to age 6 months subsequently died, 50% probability of survival being reached at 47 years. Significant (p less than or equal to 0.05) predictors of death
