Translational neuroscience of basolateral amygdala lesions: Studies of Urbach-Wiethe disease.

Urbach-Wiethe disease (UWD) is an extremely rare autosomal recessive disorder characterized by mutations in the extracellular matrix protein 1 gene on chromosome 1. Typical clinical manifestations include voice hoarseness in early infancy and neuropsychiatric, laryngeal, and dermatological pathologies later in life. Neuroimaging studies have revealed a pattern of brain calcification often but not exclusively leading to selective bilateral amygdala damage. A large body of work on amygdala lesions in rodents exists, generally employing a subregion model focused on the basolateral amygdala (BLA)

Exploring Outcomes to Consider in Economic Evaluations of Health Promotion Programs: What Broader Non-Health Outcomes Matter Most?

BACKGROUND: Attention is increasing on the consideration of broader non-health outcomes in economic evaluations. It is unknown which non-health outcomes are valued as most relevant in the context of health promotion. The present study fills this gap by investigating the relative importance of non-health outcomes in a health promotion context. METHOD: We investigated the relative importance of ten non-health outcomes of health promotion programs not commonly captured in QALYs. Preferences were elicited from a sample of the Dutch general public (N = 549) by means of a ranking task. These prefer

Toxocariasis seroprevalence in patients with rheumatoid arthritis.

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic inflammatory disease for which immunogenetic susceptibility factors have been defined. The aim of this study was to investigate seroprevalence of Toxocara canis (T. canis) in patients with RA. Forty-five patients with RA who were all diagnosed according to the ACR criteria and 48 health controls were included in this study. The mean age of patients with RA and of controls was 50+/-14 and 49+/-13, respectively. In both groups T. canis IgG antibodies were investigated with ELISA. Toxocara canis seroprevalence in patients with RA (35.6%) was significantly hi

Study of compulsive buying in patients presenting obsessive-compulsive disorder.

OBJECTIVE: The authors assessed the prevalence of compulsive buying (CB) among patients presenting an obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). They compared the buying style of patients with and without CB. METHOD: One thousand five hundred consecutive patients were assessed by a general practitioner in Paris (France). Sixty patients presenting with OCD were included. Patients with CB associated with OCD (n = 14) were compared with those with "pure" OCD (n = 46). Sixty patients paired for sex and age and free from OCD, depression, and anxiety were also recruited among the clients of the same gene

Dual Food and Energy Hardship and Associated Child Behavior Problems.

OBJECTIVE: To examine dual food and energy hardship and internalizing and externalizing behavior problems in 9-year-old children. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional analysis of the Fragile Families and Child Wellbeing Study, a prospective national urban birth cohort, when the children were 9 years old. Maternal-reported "food hardship" (ever hungry and/or ever received free food) and "energy hardship" (ever unable to pay utility bill and/or utility shutoff) within the past year, and child behavior using the Child Behavior Checklist for Ages 6-18 were assessed. Multiple logistic regressio

An eHealth Program for Insomnia in Children With Neurodevelopmental Disorders (Better Nights, Better Days): Protocol for an Economic Evaluation of a Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Children with neurodevelopmental disorders have a high risk of sleep disturbances, with insomnia being the most common sleep disorder (ie, chronic and frequent difficulties with going and staying asleep). Insomnia adversely affects the well-being of these children and their caregivers. Pediatric sleep experts recommend behavioral interventions as the first-line treatment option for children. Better Nights, Better Days for Children with Neurodevelopmental Disorders (BNBD-NDD) is a 5-session eHealth behavioral intervention delivered to parents to improve outcomes (eg, Pediatric Quali

Silencing of a chemosensory membrane protein gene, the odorant receptor co-receptor (Orco), induces a significant disruption in olfactory-driven behaviors of the pumpkin fruit fly, Bactrocera tau (Walker) (Diptera: Tephritidae).

Bactrocera tau is an economically important invasive pest damaging many vegetables and fruits. Due to the hidden characteristics of its larval infestation, a strategy for regulating B. tau adults' olfactory-driven behaviors to control the pest is desirable. The olfactory co-receptor (Orco) is a key chemosensory membrane protein in insect olfactory systems. However, the function of Orco in the olfactory-driven behaviors of this pest remains under explored. In this study, we characterized the Orco gene from B. tau, named BtauOrco. The complete open reading frame (ORF) of BtauOrco is 1422 bp, whi

Changes in Substance Abuse and HIV Risk Behaviors over 12-Month Methadone Maintenance Treatment among Vietnamese Patients in Mountainous Provinces.

Methadone maintenance treatment (MMT) programs have been used worldwide to reduce the number of drug users and for HIV prevention; however, evidence of their effectiveness in mountainous areas is limited. This study aimed to identify changes in substance abuse and sexual practices among MMT patients after treatment in three Vietnamese mountainous provinces. A survey on risk behaviors was conducted among 300 drug users in six MMT clinics prior to and following one year of MMT. Cramér's effect size of changes was extrapolated to justify the magnitude of the intervention's effectiveness. A genera

The association between career stress and disordered eating behaviors in university students: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: University students often experience high levels of stress due to uncertainty about their future careers, competitive job markets, and economic instability. Such stress may not only relate to general well-being but also be associated with maladaptive coping behaviors, including emotional or uncontrolled eating. Understanding these associations is crucial for identifying potential correlates of stress-related disordered eating patterns. This study aimed to examine the relationship between career stress and disordered eating behavior among university students, and to evaluate the mod

Relationships between youth sport participation and selected health risk behaviors from 1999 to 2007.

BACKGROUND: How adolescents spend their out-of-school time represents one of the most important factors for predicting positive youth development. Sport participation relates to many beneficial outcomes. However, current economic conditions threaten high school sport programs around the United States. This investigation examined relationships by year between sport participation and numerous health risk behaviors among high school students. METHODS: Data were derived from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Youth Risk Behavior Surveys administered every 2 years from 1999 through 2

Gender-violence and health care: How health system can step in.

Gender-violence also known as domestic violence, domestic abuse, spousal abuse or intimate partner violence, can be broadly defined as a pattern of abusive behaviors by one or both partners in an intimate relationship such as marriage, dating, family, friends or cohabitation. It can manifest as physical aggression, sexual abuse, emotional abuse, intimidation, stalking and economic and food deprivation. In most countries gender violence is a crime; though scope of the domestic or gender violence act and severity of punishment varies considerably between the countries.
