The effect of home-based neuromuscular electrical stimulation-resistance training and protein supplementation on lean mass in persons with spinal cord injury: A pilot study.

In persons with a spinal cord injury (SCI), resistance training using neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES-RT) increases lean mass in the lower limbs. However, whether protein supplementation in conjunction with NMES-RT further enhances this training effect is unknown. In this randomized controlled pilot trial, 15 individuals with chronic SCI engaged in 3 times/week NMES-RT, with (NMES+PRO, n = 8) or without protein supplementation (NMES, n = 7), for 12 weeks. Before and after the intervention, whole body and regional body composition (DXA) and fasting glucose and insulin concentrations

Synergistic effects of human umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cells/neural stem cells and epidural electrical stimulation on spinal cord injury rehabilitation.

Spinal cord injury (SCI) is a severe neurological condition marked by a complex pathology leading to irreversible functional loss, which current treatments fail to improve. Epidural electrical stimulation (EES) shows promise in alleviating pathological pain, regulating hemodynamic disturbances, and enhancing motor function by modulating residual interneurons in the lower spinal cord. Cell transplantation (CT), especially using human umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cells (hUCMSCs) and neural stem cells (NSCs), has significantly improved sensory and motor recovery in SCI. However, the limitation

Different paradigms of transcranial electrical stimulation improve motor function impairment and striatum tissue injuries in the collagenase-induced intracerebral hemorrhage rat model.

BACKGROUND: In the horizon of therapeutic restrictions in intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH), recently, non-invasive transcranial electrical stimulation (tES) has achieved considerable prosperities. Translational studies have postulated that transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) and the other types of tES remain potentially a novel therapeutic option to reverse or stabilize cognitive and motor impairments. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to comparatively evaluate the effects of the four main paradigms of tES, including tDCS, transcranial alternating (tACS), pulsed (tPCS), and random

Patterns and Outcomes of High-Voltage vs Low-Voltage Pediatric Electrical Injuries: An 8-Year Retrospective Analysis of a Tertiary-Level Burn Center.

Although electrical injuries (EIs) are rare traumas in the pediatric age group, they are considered one of the most devastating injuries. We aimed to evaluate the patterns and outcomes of pediatric high-voltage injuries (HVIs) vs low-voltage injuries (LVIs), admitted to the burn center within the efforts of determining evidence-based data for contributing to burn prevention strategies. A retrospective study was conducted on children with EIs hospitalized in the Burn Center of Adana City Training and Research Hospital for 8 years (2013-2020). Data including the patients' clinical and demographi

Does low-frequency pelvic nerves stimulation in people with spinal cord injury allow for the formation of electrical pathways responsible for the recovery of walking functions?

Over the last ten years, we have published various manuscripts on the recovery of assisted voluntary walking in people with chronic spinal chord injuries (SCI), following laparoscopic implantation of stimulation electrodes on the pelvic somatic nerves - the LION procedure. Although at the beginning of this research the objective was to allow "robotic" walking by stimulating the muscles, we realized relatively quickly that continuous low frequency stimulation of the pelvic nerves might allow the recovery of voluntary functions of the lower limbs and of the trunk necessary for walking: Seventeen

Effect of tendon vibration during wide-pulse neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) on muscle force production in people with spinal cord injury (SCI).

BACKGROUND: Neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) is commonly used in skeletal muscles in people with spinal cord injury (SCI) with the aim of increasing muscle recruitment and thus muscle force production. NMES has been conventionally used in clinical practice as functional electrical stimulation (FES), using low levels of evoked force that cannot optimally stimulate muscular strength and mass improvements, and thus trigger musculoskeletal changes in paralysed muscles. The use of high intensity intermittent NMES training using wide-pulse width and moderate-intensity as a strength traini

An alternative method to free flap for distal leg and foot defects due to electrical burn injury: distally based cross-leg sural flap.

BACKGROUND: High voltage electrical injuries can cause devastating results especially in distal extremities. Although free flaps are the golden standards for the reconstruction of these defects, sometimes local flap alternatives are more useful. One of the most favorable local flap is distally based sural flap (DBSF), which can be used in cross-leg fashion when ipsilateral extremity is affected by a high voltage electrical injury. The purpose of this study was to evaluate long term results of eleven patients who underwent a reconstruction to the lower extremity with cross-leg DBSF due to high

Electrical stimulation and blood flow restriction increase wrist extensor cross-sectional area and flow meditated dilatation following spinal cord injury.

PURPOSE: To examine the effects of neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) and blood flow restricted (BFR) exercise on wrist extensors cross-sectional area (CSA), torque and hand functions compared NMES only in individuals with incomplete tetraplegia. The acute effect of an acute bout of NMES with BFR on flow mediated dilation (FMD) was compared with BFR only. METHOD: Nine men completed 6 weeks twice weekly of bilateral NMES training of the wrist extensor muscles. The right forearm received NMES + BFR (30 % above the resting systolic blood pressure), while the left forearm received NMES o

Spinal cord tissueoid transplantation combined with tail nerve electrical stimulation promotes the voluntary movement of paralyzed hindlimbs in rats with transected spinal cord injury.

The recovery of voluntary movement after complete spinal cord injury (SCI) remains a formidable clinical challenge, as it necessitates both the reconstruction of disrupted spinal cord neural pathways and the restoration of the excitatory/inhibitory balance in sensorimotor neural circuits. To tackle this dual challenge, we transplanted a biomimetic spinal cord tissueoid (SCToid) into the injury cavity to structurally reestablish neural pathways, while concurrently applying tail nerve electrical stimulation (TNES) to functionally reactivate silent sensorimotor neural circuits. The results showed

Mo2Ti2C3/CeO2/Neurotrophin-3 MXene Hydrogel Combined with Electrical Stimulation Promotes Functional Recovery by Activating the Biogenesis and Fusion of Mitochondria in Spinal Cord Injury.

Traumatic spinal cord injury (SCI) initiates a pathological cascade dominated by mitochondrial dysfunction and unregulated oxidative stress, collectively generating an inhibitory lesion microenvironment that abrogates endogenous neural regenerative capacity. Herein, we fabricate a multifunctional conductive hydrogel scaffold by incorporating Mo2Ti2C3 MXene nanosheets, hollow CeO2 nanoparticles, and neurotrophin-3 (NT-3) within a crosslinkable matrix. When paired with exogenous electrical stimulation (ES), this combinatorial therapeutic platform synergistically activates two core mitochondrial

Integration of functional electrical stimulation during robotic-assisted intervention to increase bone mineral density in individuals with complete spinal cord injury: case report.

INTRODUCTION: A spinal cord injury (SCI) leads to an alteration of the central nervous system which significantly impacts the health, function and quality of life of those affected. Since SCI leads to a loss lower limbs usage, sublesional osteoporosis is a common and established consequence with high risk of fracture in this population. The mechanical loading remains the most effective approach to stimulate physiologic bone remodeling. Furthermore, functional electrical stimulation, by producing active muscle contractions, would also increase bone mineral density. Combining functional electric

Brachial Plexus Injury Influences Efferent Transmission on More than Just the Symptomatic Side, as Verified with Clinical Neurophysiology Methods Using Magnetic and Electrical Stimulation.

The variety of sources of brachial plexus injuries (BPIs) and the severity and similarity of their clinical symptoms with those of other injuries make their differential diagnosis difficult. Enriching their diagnosis with objective high-sensitivity diagnostics such as clinical neurophysiology may lead to satisfactory treatment results, and magnetic stimulation (MEP) might be an advantageous addition to the diagnostic standard of electrical stimulation used in electroneurography (ENG). The asymptomatic side in BPI cases sometimes shows only subclinical neurological deficits; this study aimed to
