Hearing Loss After Vestibular Implantation in Sand Rats With Normal Hearing.

IMPORTANCE: Bilateral vestibular failure is a debilitating condition that may lead to oscillopia and adversely affect quality of life. Researchers have suggested that vestibular function might be restored with implantation of an external mechanical stimulation device. However, it is essential that such a device must not interfere with normal hearing. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effect of vestibular implant insertion on hearing in a sand rat model with normal hearing. DESIGN, SETTING, AND SUBJECTS: The study was conducted in a tertiary medical center in accord with the guidelines of the Rabin

Chronic instrumentation with model microstimulators in an animal model of the lower urinary tract.

BACKGROUND: Microstimulators are a new type of neuroprosthetic device that should be considered for applications such as micturition control after spinal cord injury (SCI). These devices are small (less than 25 mm by 5 mm) and the electrodes are located on the ends of the stimulator. The aim of the current study was to develop methods for chronic implantation of model microstimulators (M-Micro) on the bladder wall and pelvic plexus of female cats. A postmortem evaluation of the effects of 3 months of implantation is reported. METHODS: Techniques to produce the M-Micro are described. Four of t

Implantable bioelectronic outlet.

Developing a reliable, long-term electrical interface for implanted bioelectronics is essential for chronic diagnostics, therapeutics, and device maintenance. Here, we introduce the implantable bioelectronic outlet (IBO), a soft, tissue-like electronic interface that enables on-demand, direct ohmic connection between implanted electronics and external devices. IBO is composed of a conducting polymer-coated low-density polymer matrix that is jacketed with a hydrophobic elastomer, allowing repetitive insertion of external electrical contacts without crack propagation. IBO was functional after 1

Single-incision implantation of cardioverter defibrillators using nonthoracotomy lead systems.

This study describes the placement of a newly designed implantable cardioverter defibrillator in a subpectoral device pocket using the incision for venous access in 16 patients undergoing implantation of an implantable cardioverter defibrillator with a nonthoracotomy lead system. The endocardial lead system consisted of a right atrial/superior vena cava defibrillation spring electrode and a right ventricular bipolar sensing/defibrillation electrode, inserted by cephalic venotomy or by puncturing of the subclavian vein. As a result of intraoperative testing using biphasic shocks the defibrillat

[Effects of pikamilon on the brain water-electrolyte balance and in models of responses to the noise and vibration exposure, and their combination with motion sickness].

Electric impedance measurements on awake rabbits with electrodes implanted into cortex, thalamus, and hypothalamus showed that modeling of the noise and general (wide-band) vibration, as well as their combination with sea-sickness action, leads to disturbances in the aqueous-electrolyte balance in brain. This is manifested by extracellular and (less pronounced) intracellular edema development. Picamilon administration (10 mg/kg, i.v.) completely prevented development of the vibration-induced intracellular edema and markedly reduced the development of damage in all other cases studied.

Effect of cisapride on myoelectrical activity of the gastrointestinal tract in the conscious miniature pig.

In conscious miniature pigs with electrodes implanted in the wall of the antrum pylori, duodenum, jejunum, ileum and caecum, the influence of intravenous injection of cisapride, 0.5 and 1 mg/kg, on gastrointestinal myoelectrical activity, was examined. Cisapride, 1 mg/kg, induced a delayed and sustained increase in antral myoelectrical activity. The studied intestinal segments were rather insensitive to the stimulating effect of the benzamide, since only the jejunum and the caecum revealed an increase in myoelectrical activity with the higher dose studied.

Histopathological findings in cochlear implants in cats.

This histopathological study on cats has shown that electrodes may be implanted into the cochlea through the round window or an opening drilled over the middle and apical turns without loss of the spiral ganglion cells or auditory nerve fibres. It has also shown that infection, leading to a labyrinthitis, was more likely to occur when an opening was drilled in the cochlea, and this could lead to a marked destruction of the cochlear structures, and loss of the spiral ganglion cells.

Platinum dissolution and tissue response following long-term electrical stimulation at high charge densities.

Objective. Established guidelines for safe levels of electrical stimulation for neural prostheses are based on a limited range of the stimulus parameters used clinically. Recent studies have reported particulate platinum (Pt) associated with long-term clinical use of these devices, highlighting the need for more carefully defined safety limits. We previously reported no adverse effects of Pt corrosion products in the cochleae of guinea pigs following 4 weeks of electrical stimulation using charge densities far greater than the published safe limits for cochlear implants. The present study exam

Supraorbital craniotomy for focal frontal epilepsy via eyebrow incision and guided by in situ stereo-EEG electrodes: illustrative case.

BACKGROUND: Focal cortical dysplasia (FCD) is a common cause of focal, pediatric, drug-resistant epilepsy. For FCDs in the frontal lobe, resection may be hampered by both difficult access and proximal eloquent cortex. Stereo-EEG (sEEG) can help define the boundaries of the suspected seizure onset zone (SOZ); however, subsequent epilepsy resections often rely on lateral approaches, requiring electrode removal before resection. Nevertheless, for some lesions, especially those in the frontopolar region, skull base approaches provide an in-line, minimally invasive trajectory that allows electrodes

Intraoperative 3D fluoroscopy accurately predicts final electrode position in deep brain stimulation surgery.

PURPOSE: In the absence of an intraoperative CT or MRI setup, post-implantation confirmation of electrode position in deep brain stimulation (DBS) requires patient transportation to the radiology unit, prolonging surgery time. This project aims to validate intraoperative 3D fluoroscopy (3DF), a widely available tool in Neurosurgical units, as a method to determine final electrode position. METHODS: We performed a retrospective study including 64 patients (124 electrodes) who underwent DBS at our institution. Intraoperative 3DF after electrode implantation and postoperative volumetric CT were

High resolution optical coherence elastography of retina under prosthetic electrode.

BACKGROUND: Quantitatively investigating the biomechanics of retina with a retinal prosthetic electrode, we explored the effects of the prosthetic electrode on the retina, and further supplemented data for a potential clinical trial. METHODS: Biomechanical properties were assessed with a high resolution optical coherence tomography (OCT) based elastography (OCE) system. A shaker was used to initiate elastic waves and an OCT system was used to track axial displacement along with wave propagation. Rabbits received surgery to implant the retinal prosthetic electrode, and elastic wave speed was m

Annular Conductive Hydrogel-Mediated Wireless Electrical Stimulation for Augmenting Neurogenesis.

Electrical stimulation (ES) has a remarkable capacity to regulate neuronal differentiation and neurogenesis in the treatment of various neurological diseases. However, wired devices connected to the stimulating electrode and the mechanical mismatch between conventional rigid electrodes and soft tissues restrict their motion and cause possible infections, thereby limiting their clinical utility. An approach integrating the advantages of wireless techniques and soft hydrogels provides new insights into ES-induced nerve regeneration. Herein, a flexible and implantable wireless ES-responsive elect

Ultrasound-driven piezoelectric nanomaterial platform enables wireless neuromodulation for Parkinson's disease.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is characterized by progressive dysfunction of the basal ganglia circuitry, leading to both motor and cognitive impairments. Current neuromodulation strategies for deep brain targets remain highly invasive and lack precise spatiotemporal controllability. For example, traditional deep brain stimulation offers substantial relief from PD's movement-related symptoms by surgically placing electrodes in the subthalamic nucleus (STN), but this procedure carries substantial risks including intracranial hemorrhage and infection. Herein, we report an ultrasound-driven piezoelect

Delayed perforation of an atrial pacemaker electrode: Lifelong risk for a rare but serious complication.

KEY CLINICAL MESSAGE: Nonspecific symptoms such as pleuritic or pericardial chest pain in cardiovascular implantable electronic devices patients, even with unremarkable ECG or device parameters, should always raise suspicion of electrode perforation, regardless of how long ago the implantation was performed. ABSTRACT: We report the successful percutaneous management of a 77-year-old woman who had a dual-chamber pacemaker implanted more than 1 year ago and presented with pericarditis pain and compensated pericardial hemorrhagic tamponade. The symptoms were due to very late acute perforation of
