Intraoperative monitoring of the recurrent laryngeal nerve using acoustic, free-run, and evoked electromyography.

The purpose of this study was to explore advantages and disadvantages of electrodes used for monitoring of the recurrent laryngeal nerve (RL … t vocal hoarseness that resolved shortly postoperatively. An initial "searching" current for evoked electromyography (EMG) was delivered at 0.7 mA and then decreased to a value of 0.35 mA, which reliably elicited RLN stimulation with a minimal incidence of false-positive results. The combination of auditory feedback from the mechanically elicited EMG and a control …

Wavelet analysis of electromyography for back muscle fatigue detection during isokinetic constant-torque exertions.

STUDY DESIGN: An investigation of the effects of human trunk extensor muscle fatigue on the temporal change in frequency content of the electromyogram as quantified using the Fourier and wavelet transforms during the performance of repetitive dynamic trunk extension. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate whether alterations in the Fourier and wavelet transform measures were consistent with a shift of the signal power to lower frequencies, and to determine which measures were more highly correlated with the decline in maximal trunk extension torque. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Objective assessment of trunk

Cauda equina syndrome complicating ankylosing spondylitis: use of electromyography and computerised tomography in diagnosis.

A case of the cauda equina syndrome complicating ankylosing spondylitis (AS) is described. An unusual feature of this case was the relapsing and remitting nature of the condition, but there is sufficient evidence to explain the clinical picture on the basis of a recurrent intraspinal inflammatory process. The clinical and radiological features are similar to those of a further 28 reported in the literature. An electromyogram (EMG) proved important in defining the extent of neurological involvement. Computerised tomography (CT) showed marked laminar erosion and no bony exit foramen encroachment

Effect of Electromyography Findings of Traction-Related Signal Loss on Prognosis During Neuromonitored Thyroidectomy.

BACKGROUND: Intraoperative neuromonitoring (IONM) is a reliable tool to detect electromyographic loss of signal (LOS). Here, we investigated the effect of electromyography features of traction-related LOS on prognosis. METHODS: Thyroidectomy patients with a traction-related LOS were included. The cases were divided into four groups as follows: Type 1 LOS with no amplitude (0 μV) (Group 1), Type 1 LOS with low-amplitude (1-99 μV) (Group 2), Type 2 LOS with no amplitude (Group 3), and Type 2 LOS with low-amplitude (Group 4). RESULTS: A total of 788 patients (1429 nerves) were analyzed. Tractio…

Artificial-Intelligence-Driven Electromyography Adaptation for Elderly Assistance at Physiological, Functional, and Behavioral Levels.

Older adults frequently face difficulties in activities of daily living (ADLs) due to age-related declines in strength, coordination, and perception. Myoelectric control provides an intuitive human-robot interface by translating muscle activity into assistive commands. However, its practical application is still challenged by signal annotation, multijoint coordination, and cross-task generalization. This study proposes a 3-level intelligent framework for multijoint upper-limb assistance based on electromyography (EMG) to support the daily living activities of older adults. At the physiological…

Tibialis anterior surface electromyography during ankle dorsiflexion as a complementary assessment measure after stroke.

BACKGROUND: The Fugl-Meyer Assessment of Lower Extremity (FMA-LE), Berg Balance Scale (BBS), and Brunnstrom lower-limb stage summarize lower-limb motor and balance function after stroke but do not directly reflect the electrical activity of distal muscles during a specific task. The tibialis anterior (TA) is a primary superficial agonist during active ankle dorsiflexion, and its surface electromyography (sEMG) may provide muscle-specific and task-specific complementary information relevant to foot drop and voluntary distal ankle-foot control. OBJECTIVE: To examine the relationships of TA sEMG…

A linear-attention based network for estimating continuous upper limb movement from surface electromyography.

Continuous kinematics estimation methods are important in human-machine interaction systems because they offer a more natural and intuitive result than pattern-recognition methods. The estimation of upper-limb movement is important, which involves the estimation of the movement of the elbow and shoulder joints. However, the deformations of muscles around the elbow and shoulder can cause the shifting of the angle sensors. Nevertheless, Vicon can measure joint angles using cameras that have no contact with muscles. In this paper, we propose a Linear-Attention-based model (LABD) rather than other

Plasma troponin T reflects lower motor neuron involvement on electromyography in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.

Cardiac troponin T (cTnT) is elevated in neuromuscular conditions without apparent cardiac disease, including Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS). The reason for this increase is unclear. Since cTnT is found in both cardiomyocytes and skeletal muscle cells, we aimed to investigate the latter as a possible cTnT source. We examined the correlation of cTnT in venous blood to lower motor neuron (LMN) involvement on Electromyography (EMG). A positive correlation between EMG findings and cTnT levels would indicate that cTnT is a biomarker for LMN involvement in ALS. This observational cohort study w…

Improved Prediction of Activities of Daily Living from Wrist Electromyography Using Intermediate Gesture Classification.

The long-term goal of this research is to automatically, remotely, and noninvasively identify Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) using muscle activity at the wrist. Alzheimer's Dementia is a widespread condition affecting patients' memory and ability to care for themselves. A wrist-worn device capable of monitoring precise ADLs could increase patient independence and provide caretakers with detailed information regarding the patient's wellbeing. Here, we investigate the use of an intermediate hand gesture classifying algorithm to predict ADLs using wrist electromyography (EMG). We show that pre…

High-Density Electromyography Biomarkers for Detecting and Monitoring of Spastic Muscles During Passive Stretch.

Spasticity is one of the most common symptoms that stroke patients develop after the incident. It not only leads to impaired motor control and pain but also lowers the quality of life for stroke patients. Botulinum toxin (BoNT) injection has been used as a first-line treatment for spasticity, which helps to reduce muscle tone. While the Modified Ashworth Scale (MAS) is the current clinical gold standard in evaluating spasticity, it can be affected by low inter-rater reliability. This study aims to evaluate the efficacy of high-density surface electromyography (HD-sEMG) in the passive stretch r…

Electric powered wheelchair control using user-independent classification methods based on surface electromyography signals.

Wheelchairs are one of the most popular assistive technology (AT) among individuals with motor impairments due to their comfort and mobility. People with finger problems may find it difficult to operate wheelchairs using the conventional joystick control method. Therefore, in this research study, a hand gesture-based control method is developed for operating an electric-powered wheelchair (EPW). This study selected a comfort-based hand position to determine the stop maneuver. An additional exploration was undertaken to investigate four gesture recognition methods: linear regression (LR), regul

Electromyography-informed musculoskeletal modeling provides new insight into hand tendon forces during tennis forehand.

Lateral epicondylitis, also known as tennis elbow, is a major health issue among tennis players. This musculo-skeletal disorder affects hand extensor tendons, results in substantial pain and impairments for sporting and everyday activities and requires several weeks of recovery. Unfortunately, prevention remains limited by the lack of data regarding biomechanical risk factors, especially because in vivo evaluation of hand tendon forces remains challenging. Electromyography-informed musculo-skeletal modeling is a noninvasive approach to provide physiological estimation of tendon forces based on…
