In this article we adopt the view that emotion dysregulation is characterized by emotion regulation dynamics that are defined as dysfunctional based on contextual criteria. We regard the construct of emotion regulation as valuable because it permits the integration of the classic view of emotions as interfering with human functioning and contemporary views of emotion as adaptive and beneficial. To define patterns that reflect emotion dysregulation, we explain our views of emotion as a dynamic process, and emotion regulation as the bidirectional interplay between emotions and actions/thoughts (…

Anxiety and depression levels in 25 duodenal ulcer patients were compared with equal numbers of age and sex matched normal controls, hospitalised patients with nonpsychosomatic medical illnesses and inpatients with neurosis. Sinha's anxiety scale and Hamilton's rating scale for depression were used to measure the levels of anxiety and depression respectively. Patients with duodenal ulcer were significantly more anxious and depressed as compared to normal subjects and patients with medical illnesses. Duodenal ulcer patients were significantly less anxious and depressed as compared to neurotics.

The goal of this report is to describe the genetic mutations of a patient with cerebellar degeneration who had ataxia and impaired emotional communication that led to damage of family relationships. We extracted genomic DNA from peripheral blood lymphocytes and performed whole exome sequencing (WES) in this patient and his unaffected parents and siblings. Found mutations were confirmed by Sanger sequencing in each individual. We found compound heterozygous mutations in the paraplegin (SPG7) gene. One mutated allele has been previously described as a disease-causing missense mutation for spasti

Emotional disorder is psychological and behavioral problems of emotional domain that is different from cognitive domain, such as thought and memory. Typical emotional disorders are anxiety disorder, depression, and bipolar disorder. In the present study, we discussed on the symptoms, progression, and treatment for the anxiety disorder (panic disorder, social phobia, and obsessive compulsive disorder), depression, and bipolar disorder. The goal of treatment for the emotional disorder is removal of symptoms. In spite of the development of brain science, removal of symptoms, prevention of recurre

Panic attacks are psychopathological phenomena with a strong emotional activation that often induces subsequent anticipatory anxiety and phobic avoidance. Impairment in emotional processing in patients with Panic Disorder (PD) has been hypothesized. Emotional Intelligence (EI) involves the individual abilities to perceive, understand and manage emotions in order to cope with changes in internal and external environment. We examined EI in 42 patients with PD with Agoraphobia compared to 49 healthy controls and investigated if clinical severity of Agoraphobia is related to EI performance. We ass…

The appropriate control of emotional responses evoked by environmental stimuli is an important innate mechanism for ensuring quality of life and even for survival. Inappropriate responses and decreased abilities to adjust to changed environmental situations can lead to psychiatric disorders, such as posttraumatic stress disorders, phobia and depression. Endocannabinoid signalling has emerged as one of the regulatory systems of the brain supporting appropriate emotional responses. As various components of the endocannabinoid system have become therapeutic targets, understanding the endocannabin

The emotional consequences of psychological traumatisms are varied: major depression, anxiety disorders, addictive behaviour, adjustement disorders, and functional symptoms. The most severe traumatisms are likely to trigger an acute stress reaction which can lead to a chronic state called post-traumatic stress disorder. A rigorous clinical evaluation will determine not only the nature of the causal events but also the factors involved in the patient's emotional vulnerability elicited through his personal biography. Apart from specific psychiatric syndromes the treatment of adjustment disorders

Facial expression is heralded as a communication system common to all human populations, and thus is generally accepted as a biologically based, universal behavior. Happiness, sadness, fear, anger, surprise, and disgust are universally recognized and produced emotions, and communication of these states is deemed essential in order to navigate the social environment. It is puzzling, however, how individuals are capable of producing similar facial expressions when facial musculature is known to vary greatly among individuals. Here, the authors show that although some facial muscles are not prese…

This paper reviews the published evidence on genetically driven variation in neurotransmitter function and brain circuits involved in emotion. Several studies point to a role of the serotonin transporter promoter polymorphism in amygdala activation during emotion perception. We also discuss other polymorphisms (e.g. the COMT val158met polymorphism, tryptophan hydroxylase-2 -703 G/T) and putative effects on affective processing in cortical and limbic regions. A different line of research concerns studies with genetic disorders. Although at a less fine-grained level, studies with individuals wit

We used affective modulation of the eye-blink component of the startle reflex to examine effects of three levels of alcohol intoxication and a no-intoxication control on emotional responses to pleasant, neutral, and unpleasant pictures. Non-problematic student drinkers (n=101; 48 female) were randomly assigned to intoxication groups. Normal inhibition of startle during exposure to pleasant pictures was intact across groups. In contrast, potentiation of startle during viewing of unpleasant pictures was evident in the no- and low-intoxication groups, compared to the intermediate- and high-intoxi

Oncologists and related health care professionals (HCPs) do not only have to follow professional protocols in their everyday work, but also have to communicate proper attitudes towards patients suffering from malignant diseases. This task is often a heavier load than the implementation of professional activities themselves. The present article is based on a survey on HCP work motivation, employment parameters and correlations with emotional labour. Fifty oncology HCPs at Debrecen University Medical Health Sciences Centre volunteered to participate in this survey containing 20 simple-choice que

Impairment after stroke may have acute and long-lasting psychological implications. Additionally, organic brain dysfunction also appears to play an important role in poststroke affective modifications. Emotional state is multidetermined and can be specifically modified by alteration of some brain networks. This article illustrates a certain number of acute and more chronic emotional disturbances after stroke, such as mood disorders, emotional dyscontrol, and modification of emotional experiences. Some neural mechanisms implicated in these modifications are discussed. The main modifications des

A patient's psychological condition can be influenced by symptoms and, at the same time, it can influence the perception of symptoms. In psychological assessment, pain can modify the results of a questionnaire, so a patient's state at the moment of the evaluation should be taken into account. Questionnaires used in assessment do not always provide clear-cut answers concerning the individual psychological component. Moreover, difficulties in classifying headache patients does not permit correct comparisons between population samples whenever patients are not classified into well defined homogen
